Creature — Spirit
Whenever Permeating Mass deals combat damage to a creature, that creature becomes a copy of Permeating Mass.
Permeating Mass Discussion

Ah, I misread that - clearly having a brain fart moment!
That would make the 2/2 suggestion not work so well. You could have this be done as a replacement effect preventing the damage and creating a delayed trigger turning the creature into a zombie at the end of combat. That would prevent any shenanigans, while still ensuring your opponent has time to respond, as they would if this used the Permeating Mass language.

I think you have way overcosted this card - Permeating Mass is a 1/3 with the same ability, and only costs . All told, it's a fun, but not particularly powerful, ability.
I'm not entirely sold on Black having such a transformation effect, but I think the argument is there. I might make change this creature's P/T to 2/2, so it matches the traditional zombie token. Then make it cost (That's the same cost as Walking Corpse , and this is, effectively, a vanilla zombie with a slight upside--same cost, but at rare seems perfectly legitimate). If you wanted it to be a bit harder to cast, you could probably go as high as , but I don't think you need to push much beyond that.
I'm also not sure where you got the idea that damage carried over to the copy--damage marked on a creature is not a copiable value.

Not a creature, but Molten Vortex is insanely good against hate-bears as you can use your dead draws to take them out instead of your premium removal.

this actually doesn't work on indestructible creatures like Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger because Permeating Mass needs to deal combat damage in order to transform the creature, but indestructible creatures can't take normal damage, so...

I need some help with this particular interaction. If I am attacked by Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder and block with my Permeating Mass , since blockers assign damage first (the the Mass "deals combat damage), does Yidris become a copy of Permeating Mass before he assigns damage? I am trying to determine exactly when Yidris would become a copy and if his trample & triggered ability would still resolve? I hope this makes sense and thanks in advance.

Savra, Queen of the Golgari - Commander of the first EDH deck I built from scratch, which is still a formidable attrition style deck. Runs a convoluted, but very resilient, infinite combo as an emergency finisher.
Toshiro Umezawa - Commander of my highest-rated deck here on EDH, I've put a lot of time into making his list run smoothly and the primer I have here is the result.
Neheb, the Eternal
- Commander of my most fun deck. He makes so much mana, and can have unbelievably explosive games, finishing people off with almost nothing in play. My favorite moment with this deck was killing a player from 40 with the exert trigger of a
Moonlight Bargain - Such an amazing card, so underrated. Until it's recent release in a commander product, I'd never seen it played by anyone else.
Nissa Revane - The first planeswalker I pulled from a pack, and still my favorite planeswalker. Is she good? No. Do I care? No.
The Great Aurora - Why does no one run a mono-green board wipe? This thing is fantastic. Ramp a bunch, float some mana, cast this, then rebuild your board before anyone else gets a chance.
Archangel of Thune - Gotta represent my love of angels somehow, and this card is just a friggin' beast, easily one of my favorite cards. It's got it all - excellent art, good flavor text, and a game-ending ability. I've got a sweet stained-glass alter of one that looks absolutely amazing.
Permeating Mass - It's my dream to one day build a Permeating mass first strike deck, with the goal being creating a field of as many permeating masses as possible. Someday.

Hi there, I have a couple of suggestions for you. first of any and all indestructible creatures would also ruin your day so I would suggest adding a Permeating Mass, since it turns the other creature into a copy of itself it gets around a few of the pitfalls that the deck currently suffers (as before mentioned indestructible creatures, and also, while it might lose a fight with a double-strike creature, it essentially removes that creature as a threat as your first-strike deathtouch creatures can block and attack without fearing the same repercussion)
Also, Quietus Spike gives creatures deathtouch by itself, so it is unnecessary to put it on a creature with deathtouch to get that effect. Might I suggest Virtus the Veiled instead? It fits in with your 1-3 drop deathtouchers and it has Quietus Spike's effect attached for just 3 mana.

Both Warden of the First Tree and Figure of Destiny are removal magnets and since neither of them start as spirits, instant speed removal will likely hit them before you are able to sink mana into them. The established spirit tribal deck in modern would tend to be UW and have Mausoleum Wanderer and Rattlechains as early plays. If you wanted to splash green then Strangleroot Geist, Permeating Mass, Carven Caryatid and the already included Loam Dweller might be worth it. As for the 9 cards which cast 5+ mana, the odds are against you getting to cast them without some major ramp...
