MARATH 4, LIST CONSTRUCTED FROM MAY 2017-PRESENT

BASIC WALKTRHOUGH

this is primarily a naya toolbox deck. it runs a large number of utility creatures which can be tutored in a variety of ways (GSZ, fauna shaman, birthing pod, eladamri's call, etc.). because many of these utility creatures rely on ETB effects, torpor orb/hushwing griff effects hose this deck pretty badly if i don't draw into my instant/sorcery removal or aura shards.

card draw and selection have been emphasized in this deck-- mid-to-late game cards like greater good and collective defiance help this deck find gas after sylvan library and scroll rack blast through the early game. in any case, it seems that i tend to either have a great hand or have drawn into my combo pieces by around turn five to seven.

marath 4 runs a very low amount of lands but makes up for it with loads of ramp in creatures, instants, sorceries, and-- in some cases-- through artifacts like ashnod's altar. the low land count does, however, mean that without careful mulligans, this deck can sputter out in the early game and mana screw with white or red. mana crypt is absent due to budget concerns, as are ABU duals and cradle.

COMBO EXPLANATIONS

although this deck is built as a midrange toolbox deck, it can also become combo very quickly. the primary combo this deck has been built to accommodate revolves around deathrender:

-1. tutor for deathrender and greater good

-2. cycle through creatures in your hand/battlefield until you find the other combo pieces

-3. locate karmic guide, skullwinder, and eternal witness

-4. using deathrender and a sac outlet, loop the three of them ad infinitum

-5. for damage outlets use etb engines like impact tremors/purphoros/outpost siege or sac outlets like goblin bombardment

older versions of this combo involved reanimating inferno titan infinite times or including angel of serenity as part of the loop, but the skullwinder method appears to be a great deal more consistent and easier to find with tutors like GSZ.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

the landbase is pretty rigid in this variant of the deck due to needing all the fixing i can get while also having enough basic lands for my ramp spells and earthcraft to remain relevant and slide under nonbasic=hosing hate. barbarian ring was a pretty helpful utility land, as was myriad landscape (although the latter is much slower and less useful than blighted woodland or krosan verge). some variants of this deck have run thermopod (which happens to be the best sac outlet on a body in naya) and that version of the deck would likely necessitate snow lands for that very very very slight edge in being able to activate haste on the thermopod without saccing something first. mouth of ronom is then also available to this deck and would likely be a better choice than barbarian ring if the deck can accommodate that much colorless in its lands.

most of my remaining consideration cards are tutors, boardwipes, hate, and ramp. there's so many things i'd love to add to this deck... but so little space...
