The Primer

Disclaimer: I build my decks with the main goal of having a good time while playing and not necessarily optimizing them to win. Regardless of what you are looking for I hope you enjoy the deck! (That being said, this is my one more competitive deck.)

Part 2: Because I only play casually, no group I play with uses commander damage as a win condition. Please keep that in mind while looking at the deck.

Why Sidisi, Undead Vizier

This was my 2nd mono-colored deck in my collection of all the color combo commander decks (though technically my 3rd mono-colored commander as my first was a classic beginning commander stompy green Nylea deck that I no longer have), and I decided to keep all my mono-colored decks roughly within the themes of the color pie. I already had a white Angel tribal deck, so for my black commander deck I wanted to play a graveyard-based sacrifice and recursion deck. Who better to command the armies of death than Sheoldred. Well, at least that was the case, until I switched up the strategy to be a more streamlined wombo zombo combo deck and made Sidisi, Undead Vizier the commander (Aug 2024) for better consistency and synergy.

The Strategy

Lots of sacrificing and recurring creatures.

It's a pretty typical aristocrats gameplan with Blood Artist-like effects throughout the deck with Gravecrawler and Warren Soultrader being the main out.

Card Choices

Personal choices:

• Tutors: I get that tutors are good, I very occasionally use them however because it feels cheaty to me and I prefer the randomness of drawing off the top, uncertainty is all part of the fun for me! That being said, I've been making this deck a little more competitive, hence Sidisi, Undead Vizier being the commander along with the addition of other tutors. This is not typical of most my decks.

• Infinite Combos: They are allowed in my playgroup and it varies how often they show up in my decks. Winning with one is kinda boring though so I prefer to limit them (another reason I don't prefer tutors - sometimes they just say "grab a combo piece and win the game"). Yet once again, this is my one more competitive deck so this one has quite a few.

Notable Lands

• Buried Ruin: Gets back destroyed sac outlets.

• Fell Mire  : Backup removal.

• Phyrexian Tower: Sac outlet for extra mana.

• Spymaster's Vault: Fun with any infinite ETB/LTB combo.

• Takenuma, Abandoned Mire: Gets back extra creatures from my graveyard to my hand.

• Talon Gates of Madara: Temporary removal on a land.

• Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth: Consistency, especially with Nirkana Revenant.

• Witch's Cottage: Gets back extra creatures from my graveyard to top of library.

Creatures

• Accursed Marauder: Recur-able sacs on ETB.

• Blood Artist: Wincon with infinite Gravecrawler sacs. Also, incidental lifegain if I don't have the combo.

• Carrion Feeder: Big zombie sac outlet and can be its own sac outlet for Liliana, Untouched By Death.

• Dauthi Voidwalker: Graveyard hate with an extra spell.

• Erebos, God of the Dead: Card draw and shuts down lifegain combos like Aetherflux Reservoir stuff.

• Gravecrawler: Can be constantly sacrificed and recast with Phyrexian Altar for infinite Blood Artist (or similar) triggers.

• Initiates of the Ebon Hand: Colorless is black now.

• Mindslicer: Hah! Screw you and your hand.

• Opposition AgentGC: Nope, those are mine now.

• Orcish BowmastersGC: Hurts people for drawing cards and combos with Ashnod's Altar + Nim Deathmantle.

• Pawn of Ulamog: More mana from death!

• Pitiless Plunderer: More mana yet again! Really good with the future Gravecrawler and a sac outlet.

• Reassembling Skeleton: Another loop-able creature for sac triggers.

• Shambling Ghast: 1 black mana zombie for Liliana, Untouched By Death combos.

• Warren Soultrader: Very good sac outlet that ramps, works quite well Gravecrawler.

• Zulaport Cutthroat: Wincon with infinite Gravecrawler sacs. Also, incidental lifegain if I don't have the combo.

Instants

• Aphotic Wisps: Fun with Spymaster's Vault or Carrion Feeder.

• Bitter Triumph: Removal of the creature or walker.

• Cabal Ritual: Just a lil more mana.

• Culling the Weak: Quick manas.

• Cut Down: Bye bye little guy.

• Dark Ritual: Fast mana.

• Entomb: Tutor something to the yard to Reanimate

• Flare of Malice: Non-targeted and free-castable removal.

• Force of Despair: Get rid of things for free!

• Go for the Throat: Good and simple removal

• Imp's Mischief: Your Counterspell now targets itself.

• Infernal Grasp: Bye bye creature for cheap.

• Nasty End: More cards more win.

• Rain of Filth: Extra man for combo time.

• Slaughter Pact: Super good removal.

• Snuff Out: Free removal spells are fun!

• Vampiric TutorGC: Gets me what I need cheap.

• Vendetta: Cheap removal.

• Withering Boon: No one expects the black counterspell.

Sorceries

• Agadeem's Awakening  : Another way to win with Buried Alive.

• Bubbling Muck: More mana.

• Buried Alive: Tutors up my combo pieces to the yard.

• Damnation: Mass removal.

• Dark Deal: Put my hand in the graveyard or make my opponents give up their hands.

• Demonic TutorGC: I'll take that one please.

• Diabolic Intent: Gets me more mana most the time.

• Feed the Swarm: Rare mono-black enchantment destruction.

• Grim Tutor: Tutors are good.

• Innocent Blood Non-targeted removal

• Insatiable Avarice: Flexible tutor and card draw

• Living Death: A quick win after casting Buried Alive.

• Raise Dead: Gets back creatures tutored to the graveyard.

• Reanimate: Come back to me my son.

• Sign in Blood: Card drawn.

• Toxic Deluge: Good mass removal.

• Unearth: Another Reanimate for combo pieces.

Planeswalkers

• Liliana, Untouched By Death: Ult is a fun combo with any one mana zombie and Phyrexian Altar.

Enchantments

• Animate Dead: Another Reanimate for combo pieces.

• Bastion of Remembrance: Backup combo piece.

• NecropotenceGC: Basically wins the game the next turn assuming I draw what I need.

• Ripples of Undeath: Discount black version of Sylvan Library

• Waste Not: A lil bit of everything to help out. Very nice with Dark Deal.

Artifacts

• Altar of Dementia: Another alternate win condition.

• Arcane Signet: Raamppppppp.

• Ashnod's Altar: A staple sac outlet.

• Chrome MoxGC: Very good ramp.

• Fellwar Stone: Rampy rock.

• Jet Medallion: Cheaper spells!

• Lotus Petal: Quick manas.

• Nim Deathmantle: Big combo piece with anything that creates a token on ETB/LTB and Ashnod's Altar

Combos and Wincons

Infinite Mana

With infinite mana we can cast Sidisi, Undead Vizier as many times as we'd like, exploiting it to itself to tutor for any combo listed in the next section.

Ways to create infinite mana:

• Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + Pitiless Plunderer + any zombie

Infinite ETB/Death Triggers

Payoffs:

• Blood Artist

• Plague Belcher

• Zulaport Cutthroat

Warren Soultrader can replace Phyrexian Altar + any zombie when using any of the above payoffs other than Plague Belcher
