Grenzo and Doomsday

Grenzo, Dungeon Warden works well with Doomsday to let you stack your library to 5 known cards and put those cards on to the battlefield at instant speed. With this, you do not have to cast draw spells in order to win in decks like Zur the Enchanter. What are Grenzo, Dungeon Warden's benefits?

• Grenzo, Dungeon Warden cracks the pile created by Doomsday, therefore, no card in hand is needed to manually crack the pile.
• Grenzo, Dungeon Warden interacts with the pile at instant speed and can not be countered by the typical counter spells i.e. Counterspell or Force of Will.
• Replacement effects such as Leyline of the Void and Rest in Peace are no effect on Grenzo, Dungeon Warden's ability.

Game Plan

This is the easy part . . . cast Grenzo, Dungeon Warden then cast Doomsday use Grenzo, Dungeon Warden's ability to crack the pile and win. Easy enough right? Let's look at some of the common piles and see how they win.

Piles

What are piles? A pile is the library after Doomsday has been cast. Piles need to be used for the situation that you are in. Piles listed below will listed from the BOTTOM card to the top card. I repeat the FIRST card will be the BOTTOM card in your pile.

Pile Number 1 Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Zealous Conscripts

BBB is needed to cast Doomsday and 2 is needed to activate Grenzo, Dungeon Warden. If Grenzo, Dungeon Warden is on the field. This pile makes an army of Zealous Conscripts that swing out and kill all of your opponents.

1. Priest of Gix This will add BBB to our manna pool to activate Grenzo, Dungeon Warden again. Priest of Urabrask may be used instead.
2. Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker target Priest of Gix with Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker's ability, thus adding BBB to your mana pool for a total of BBBB.
3. Goblin Sledder or Mogg Raider this will reduce your mana pool to BB. Sacrifice Goblin Sledder or Mogg Raider to add +1/+1 to Grenzo, Dungeon Warden. This will allow you to get Zealous Conscripts on to the battlefield.
4. Zealous Conscripts target Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker to untap it, then use Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker's ability to copy Zealous Conscripts. This creates an infinite amount of Zealous Conscripts to swing with. More details are here Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Zealous Conscripts .
5. This is a quasi-flex spot. You want some sort of ritual or artifact ramp to produce mana, in the case of Grenzo, Dungeon Warden's untimely demise. Cards like Dark Ritual if you have a red land source, Desperate Ritual or Pyretic Ritual if you have the mana to cast plus a source of black mana. What I have found to be the most reliable is Lion's Eye Diamond it is zero mana and can make any mana color and does not require you to tap lands.

NOTES: I rarely use this pile myself, I have found that this one is more often disrupted in someway. Whether its Settle the Wreckage, Cyclonic Rift, Nevinyrral's Disk, or Angel of the Dire Hour

Pile Number 2 Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Murderous Redcap

BBB is needed to cast Doomsday and 2 is needed to activate Grenzo, Dungeon Warden. If Grenzo, Dungeon Warden is on the field. This pile blasts at each of your opponent's face with Murderous Redcap's ability.

1. Priest of Gix This will add BBB to our manna pool to activate Grenzo, Dungeon Warden again. Priest of Urabrask may be used instead.
2. Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker target Priest of Gix with Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker's ability, thus adding BBB to your mana pool for a total of BBBB.
3. Skirk Prospector This allows us a sac outlet to make RR that will be used later on. Mana pool will be at BB
4. Murderous Redcap it will ETB damage. Now we sac Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Murderous Redcap to Skirk Prospector to create RR. You must now hold priority and activate Grenzo, Dungeon Warden in order to reuse Murderous Redcap again.
5. You must use Grenzo, Dungeon Warden ability while holding priority in order to win. with Metallic Mimic entering the battlefield name GOBLINS. An additional +1/+1 will be added on to Murderous Redcap to balance the -1/-1 from the persist trigger.

NOTES: I use this pile the most. I find it most effective for what is used. It is still fragile and can die to instant removal and burn spells like Lightning Bolt, Fatal Push, and Cyclonic Rift.

Pile Number 3 Metallic Mimic + Murderous Redcap without Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker

BBB is needed to cast Doomsday and 2 is needed to activate Grenzo, Dungeon Warden. If Grenzo, Dungeon Warden is on the field. This pile blasts at each of your opponent's face with Murderous Redcap's ability.

1. Priest of Gix or Priest of Urabrask This will add BBB or RRR to our manna pool to activate Grenzo, Dungeon Warden again.
2. Use either Priest of Urabrask or Priest of Gix, which evreyone you did not use first. Your mana total will be at BRRR or BBBR.
3. Skirk Prospector This allows us a sac outlet to make RR that will be used later on. Mana pool will be at 2.
4. Murderous Redcap it will ETB damage. Now we sac Skirk Prospector and Murderous Redcap to Skirk Prospector to create RR. You must now hold priority and activate Grenzo, Dungeon Warden in order to reuse Murderous Redcap again.
5. You must use Grenzo, Dungeon Warden ability while holding priority in order to win. with Metallic Mimic entering the battlefield name GOBLINS. An additional +1/+1 will be added on to Murderous Redcap to balance the -1/-1 from the persist trigger.

Card Choices

Card choice will vary depending on your play group and the meta, when at a tournament.

Lands Show

Lands are based on 4 player pod. Thus Luxury Suite is used. All the fetchlands are used in order to get out the correct mana cost. Life for mana color is also important to get the correct balance of mana i.e. Mana Confluence and Sulfurous Springs.

Tutors Show

Tutors are what get us Doomsday so that we can go for the win. I use transmute spells Dimir Machinations and Shred Memory. This act like tutors that can only fetch Doomsday. The other tutors I use can be drop on turn one to get Doomsday in our hand. Stay away from slow tutors like Diabolic Tutor and Cruel Tutor which is high cmc and does not put Doomsday in our hand.

Pile Pieces Show

Pile pieces are what win us the game and thus can not be changed out! However, trying a new pile is okay but do not cut out any pile pieces!

Artifact Ramp Show

0 cmc artifacts like Lion's Eye Diamond and Mox Diamond give us free mana to get our combo off. In one turn we need BR for Grenzo, Dungeon Warden BBB for Doomsday and 2 colorless to activate (depending on the pile being used) Grenzo, Dungeon Warden. Thats 2BBBBR to go off on a single turn! Use the ramp to win.

Removal/Protection Show

Red has only a couple counterspells i.e. Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast so we can not defend ourself well.
Overmaster can be used to draw out counterspells. Recoup and Underworld Breach can be used to bring back Doomsday if you are forced to discard it or if it is countered. In my play group I usually do not care about other creature spells so I do not use much removal but I keep Fire Covenant if I need to get around something.

Budget replacement cards

Under each sections are a list of cards that can be used in place of some of the more pricey MtG cards.

Lands Show

Basics can be added they are cheap just do the math on your mana symbols. Shadowblood Ridge is decent if you are using more mana rocks.
Dragonskull Summit, Smoldering Marsh, Tainted Peak and Rocky Tar Pit are decent budget choices. Mana the Gathering is a good site to do some exploring on.

Tutors Show

Grim Tutor is reprinted and fairly cheap.
Diabolic Tutor is slower but can be used as well. Transmute spells should also be included.

Pile Pieces Show

The pile pieces are fairly cheap and should not be altered. Buy these first.

Artifact Ramp Show

This is the most expensive part of our deck. Mana the Gathering has a list of mana rocks based on cmc. This is the best way to see what is not crazy expensive.

Opening Hands

You generally want 2 ish lands with Doomsday in hand a few good rocks to go off on turn 2 - 3. A god hand would be

• Mox Diamond
• Mox Opal
• Luxury Suite
