Maybeboard

"IZZET BROWN? (2018)" is an artifacts-matter combo deck commanded by Saheeli, the Gifted.

Designed for multiplayer games, the deck also has a Kaladesh-block focus. It wins via a number of different combos, using its commander's second affinity-like ability to ramp into a quick win.

Artifacts comprise 40% of the deck, with about half of them costing two mana or less, including ten mana rocks† (e.g. Mana Crypt, Chrome Mox). This helps to maximize the commander's mana cost reduction ability, making plays like a turn three Ugin, the Spirit Dragon a fantastic reality.†† Running so many artifacts sets the deck up for an extremely asymmetrical mass removal ultimate by the colorless planeswalker as well. The deck has ways to make even more artifacts, including the Metallic Mimic + Animation Module combo.

Being a combo deck, cards like Scroll Rack help dig for the pieces needed to construct the win. Although Fabricate can search up any artifact, the deck's best tutors are arguably Trinket Mage and Trophy Mage. In addition to being able to chump block for the deck's planeswalkers, both can be copied or bounced to search again. The Mages are able to tutor for crucial combo components, like Walking Ballista and Rings of Brighthearth. Inventors' Fair in conjunction with Crucible of Worlds also allows for repeated artifact tutoring in longer games.

Before the deck can combo off, however, opponents must be disrupted from interfering with victory. Cyclonic Rift and Mana Drain both serve to protect the final turn. If absolutely necessary, Oblivion Stone can reset the board. Paradoxical Outcome can mitigate the Stone's destruction, especially if it's cast with Saheeli's ability.

Outcome also works well with Paradox Engine, given the deck's number of mana rocks. When used together, the Engine allows one to take even more advantage of the low-cost mana producers, either by using them multiple times in a turn when untapped, or to cheaply cast them again for energy shenanigans with Gonti's Aether Heart.

Finally, energy shenanigans power the deck's most flavorful combo: Whirler Virtuoso + Gonti's Aether Heart + Decoction Module/Panharmonicon. If not sinking infinite mana into Retrofitter Foundry or Walking Ballista, one can go for this combo instead, adding Reckless Fireweaver to burn away opponents with hexproof or shroud.

Some players may opt to swap other cards into the deck, such as Deepglow Skate (to go off with Mycosynth Lattice and the deck's commander), or even Guardians of Koilos to combo with Saheeli Rai + Paradox Engine + the deck's many rocks.

Regardless of how one takes their opponents down, it's always fun to play "IZZET BROWN?"

NOTES

Basalt Monolith is not counted amongst the deck's mana rocks given both its mana cost and primary use as a combo piece.

†† Fantastic reality:

turn 1) artifact land, Sol Ring

turn 2) Island, Chrome Mox (five mana available; three artifacts; can cast commander and create Servo)

turn 3) Mountain (six mana available; four artifacts; can cast spell up to 10 CMC with commander)
