Yeah, activated and triggered abilities are different. Activated abilities are written "cost: effect" and can be activated as many times as you can pay the cost. For example, Royal Assassin and Shivan Dragon both have activated abilities; you can use Royal Assassin over and over again if you have ways to untap it and you can pay as much as you want to boost Shivan Dragon's power.

Triggered abilities start by specifying a time (whenever, at the beginning of, etc), and then say to do something. These abilities go on the stack if their trigger event happens, and if they have a cost you pay it while they're resolving. For example, if you have an artifact come into play while you control Era of Innovation , it will trigger. When the trigger resolves, it gives you the option of paying . If you do, the rest of the effect happens. You can't pay multiple mana bacause you can't just use triggered abilities at will, you have to instead set up the event they're looking for.

Each Era of Innovation triggers separately, allowing you to pay one for each trigger. So, if you control three copies and have an artifact enter the battlefield, you can pay up to . For each you pay, you gain .

Do I obtain 2 energy for every Era of Innovation that I have in play when I spend 1 colorless mana? Or are multiple copies in play obsolete?

How is this dealt with in general?

So, I'd start by cutting three lands again, adding more ramp sources, and adding card draw.

Card draw options: Mentor of the Meek , Rhystic Study , Book of Rass , Jace Beleren , and Skullclamp are all decent options. Group-hug options that are affordable include Kami of the Crescent Moon , Well of Ideas , and Dictate of Kruphix .

Ramp: Azorius Signet , Orzhov Signet , Dimir Signet , and Sol Ring are a good start. Smothering Tithe is great.

Cards to cut: Era of Innovation , Court Homunculus , Aethersphere Harvester , Esper Stormblade , Porcelain Legionnaire , Windwright Mage , and probably a bunch of other of your low-curve creatures. They just don't do enough to warrant a slot in EDH, really. You'll want to get out as much bang for your buck for each creature you pack into the deck.

You need some kind of focus for this deck, too. What do you want to do? How do you want to win?

Some more cards are Era of Innovation (might want to look into cards that give energy counters as Atraxa can proliferate those), Barrin's Codex , Etched Oracle .

Acquire Board break down:

Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage is considered for replacement commander

Aethersquall Ancient, Decoction Module, and Era of Innovation, are largely for Gonti's Aether Heart. Era of Innovation is the weakest and would not be included on its own.

Foundry Inspector and Jhoira's Familiar are cost reducers, They may just be excess

Arcane Encyclopedia, Howling Golem, Padeem, Consul of Innovation, Paradoxical Outcome, Reverse Engineer, Sage of Lat-Nam, Sai, Master Thopterist and Game Plan are added draw power

Metalwork Colossus, Cogwork Assembler, Gonti's Aether Heart, Mechanized Production, Timestream Navigator, Magistrate's Scepter, Karn's Temporal Sundering, Nexus of Fate are to make winning more consistant

Whir of Invention, Thran Temporal Gateway, Planar Bridge, Jalira, Master Polymorphist, Inventors' Fair are for getting things out in fun ways

Efficient Construction, Baird, Steward of Argive keep from being killed by flyers and hordes

Inspiring Statuary is fun but does not do enough to justify the slot

I'd really appreciate your opinion on my version of the deck: Braw-Heeli There are some changes you might find worth pondering.

For example, Thran Gateway, Open into Wonder and Endless Sands seem out of place to me. I've found Glassblower's Puzzleknot, Era of Innovation and Inventors' Fair a lot more useful.

I like the concept of what your basing your cards around. You may want to consider trying Era of Innovation to combo with the Whirler Virtuoso. This makes it easier for you to gain energy for spawning more tokens as you will only need one one of the enchantment in play with one Decoction Module to make it so you can spawn a token and the pay one mana to maintain your energy.

You also may want to cut Metalwork Colossus from the deck because its mana cost is only reduced by "Non-creature" artifacts. You don't run that many that help that function and the creature itself doesn't help your deck function that much in general.

I would also suggest cutting Welding Sparks in favor of harnessed lighting. the energy based spell helps synergize with the energy mechanic of virtuoso and can be played for less and do the same amount of damage by default.

I would also suggest removing Pia's Revolution as this card does not offer much value to your decks style of play. This card functions better in a deck type that destroys its own artifacts in attempt to make your opponent think if they want you to have a card back or not.

Trophy Mage I am not sure if it is good in deck or not. You may just want to cut in favor of another copy of Chief of the Foundry and Foundry Inspector each since these are your only targets with the trigger.

In case you are interested you can check out a version of this deck I made a while ago for inspiration Module Silliness (U/R). It is something I dabbled with when the set Kaledesh first came out and though tit was fun.

Best of luck.
