Introduction

Welcome to my weird Abzan Birthing Pod value deck! I made this deck for FNM, so this not a deck that I went all out on. I want others to have fun playing against this deck, so I don’t have much in the way of Stax or control.

The main point of this deck is to outvalue the opponents, either through Birthing Pod and Athreos, God of Passage (or Ravos, Soultender, but preferably Athreos), or Reyhan, Last of the Abzan, Winding Constrictor and Shalai, Voice of Plenty (Birthing Pod can also play a part here, as you add to the amount of counters that was on the creature when it dies).

Why Abzan?

I chose Abzan as the colours for this deck because it allows me to have all my value combos in one deck. Having three win cons/combos makes this deck not exactly easy to beat.

Why Tymna and Reyhan?

Reyhan, Last of the Abzan allows me to execute my combo by putting a sacrificed creature’s +1/+1 counters on another creature (or creatures), therefore getting more counters using Winding Constrictor. Tynma the Weaver is just there to support an aggressive strategy by allowing me to draw cards if I attack and deal combat damage to my opponents

Strengths

• This deck can win out of nowhere.

• My commanders themselves can get a lot of hate, therefore allowing me to sneak cards that might be under the radar

Weaknesses

• This deck is relatively easy to beat, if you know how to stop it.

• My commanders get a lot of hate (at least in my LGS), therefore it sometimes make it harder to win.

Card Choices Show

Manabase

This deck’s manabase is pretty standard for a tri-color deck. I don’t have money for the OG duals, so the Temples are replacing them. I have Gavony Township to dish out +1/+1 counters and the Manlands to, well, become Elementals.

The ramp section is pretty standard as well. You’ve got the signets, Cultivate, Chromatic Lantern, Sol Ring, BoP, and finally, Cultivator's Caravan

Wincons/Value

• Even though she isn’t in this group (as she is one of my commanders) Reyhan, Last of the Abzan helps with the second combo (Reyhan, Last of the Abzan, Winding Constrictor, Shalai, Voice of Plenty and Birthing Pod) as she is the one that allows you to move +1/+1 counters around when creatures die, therefore doubling them with Winding Constrictor.

• Archangel of Thune part one of two in the third wincon combo (Spike Feeder + the Arcangel)

• Athreos, God of Passage helps in my main combo (Birthing Pod + Athreos or Ravos, Soultender + any creature) by allowing me to bring back my guys to my hand after I’ve sacrificed them.

• Birthing Pod allows me to sacrifice creatures and get bigger ones. Usually, the sacrificed creatures will get returned to the hand with Athreos, God of Passage or Ravos, Soultender.

• Ravos, Soultender is there when I am going in wide with tokens, or when I want to return creatures that I’ve sacrificed to my hand to recast them. He can also be one of my commanders.

• Shalai, Voice of Plenty just dishes out +1/+1 counters and protects me and my guys.

• Spike Feeder forms and infinite life and +1/+1 counter combo with Archangel of Thune. This combo can also be helped my adding Winding Constrictor, giving me more bang for my infinite buck.

+1/+1 Counters

• Abzan Ascendancy is just a simple Enchantment that gives a +1/+1 counter to all creatures I control when it ETBs. It is also great boardwipe insurance

• Anafenza, the Foremost is an alternate commander that gives an aggressive strategy by allowing you to put a +1/+1 counter on an attacking creature whenever she attacks. She is also good graveyard hate.

• I’ve already talked about the Arachangel of Thune.

• Most of the time, Avatar of the Resolute grows extremely big as I have so many cards that can give a +1/+1 counter to each creature I control (7) and more which can move counters or has some inherent counter ability.

• Cathars' Crusade is just stupid in a deck with Birthing Pod. You get two triggers every time you use the Pod with Athreos out on the field (if you opponents don’t pay three life, that is).

• Champion of Lambholt gives all my creatures unblockable from creatures with power less than the Champion’s power.

• Collective Effort just puts a +1/+1 counter on everybody. It can also destroy a annoying Enchantment or destroy a creature with power four or greater.

• Forgotten Ancient can get counters really, really quickly, and then move them to other, less fortunate creatures who don’t have counters on them.

• I’ve already talked about Gavony Township in the Land section, so I won’t repeat myself here.

• Ivorytusk Fortress simply untaps each creature I control with a +1/+1 counter on it during everybody’s untap step. Love the flavour text, too.

• Juniper Order Ranger pumps himself and every creature that enters the battlefield after him when they enter the battlefield. I’ve seen him grow to a 45/47 before (Thanks to March of the Multitudes) and the Soldiers being like 4/4s, thanks to some other pumps I had going.

• Path of Discovery either gets me a land every time a creature ETBs, or puts a +1/+1 counter on said creature if it’s a nonland.

• I’ve already talked about Shalai, Voice of Plenty

• Wild Onslaught either puts a +1/+1 counter on each creature I control for , or puts two on for . At instant speed!

• Winding Constrictor simply adds to the number of counters being put on creatures.

Card Draw and Filtering

• Tymna the Weaver supports a go-wide strategy by drawing us cards. And who doesn’t like drawing cards?

• Abzan Charm is good as you can draw cards or distribute counters, but I put it in this section as I usually draw cards off of it.

• Ajani, Mentor of Heroes allows me to get about of a third of my deck through his second ability and he can also give counters. His ultimate is extremely useful for me, as I pay a lot of life to activate Birthing Pod and others abilities.

• Arguel's Blood Fast   lets me draw cards, and then when I’m low on life, I can flip it and start sacrificing creatures to gain me life.

• Grim Flayer allows me to sort through the top of my deck, putting into the grave what I don’t need or want to reanimate or recur. It also allows me to rearrange the top of my library.

• Growing Rites of Itlimoc   is like a cheaper Gaea's Cradle that works better in this deck anyway!

• Part of my main strategy is to get Birthing Pod out and get out a bunch of big creatures. Huatli, Radiant Champion plays straight into this strategy by allowing me to draw cards off the back of these creatures. She can also pump a guy up to a huge P/T and swing for maybe leathal.

• Mosswort Bridge has Hideaway. Getting to 10 total power with this deck is fairly easy, and I can cast the exiled card almost every time.

• I’ve already talked about Path of Discovery, so I won’t repeat myself.

• Sylvan Library allows me to draw extra cards for life. ‘Nough said.

• Vizier of the Menagerie allows me to look at the top card of library at any time (which can be extremely useful). The snake also allows me to cast creature cards from the top of my library and use mana of any type to cast them. All bundled in a 3/4 package for .

• Windbrisk Heights has Hideaway. Attacking with three creatures is relatively easy in this deck.

Tokens

• Angel of Invention is a good reanimation/Birthing Pod target, and pumps my guys up.

• Gideon, Ally of Zendikar is a planeswalker, so he allows me to rebuild after a creature boardwipe.

• Hangarback Walker gets a whole load of counters on it, then we’ll sacrifice it to get a lot of Thopters and a Serra Ascendant

• Leonin Warleader gains me life and hits for six total power if you don’t block. Every turn.

• Lingering Souls is arguably the best token maker ever printed, so I had to include it.

• Who doesn’t like a March of the Multitudes, X equals 40, creating 40 3/3 tokens with Lifelink?

• Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafter gives me a mana sink and allows me to slowly build an army of Servos and Constructs.

• Trostani Discordant is extremely good value as a reanimation/Birthing Pod target. Lifelink is also quite important in this deck, as I have a lot of cards for which I have to pay life for them to work.

Reanimation/Recursion

• Eternal Witness is just all round goodstuff and should be in all Green EDH decks, this one included. It’s a great reanimation target as you get to recur something else from the graveyard

• Journey to Eternity   works well with Birthing Pod.

Utility/Tutors

• I’ve already talked about Anafenza, the Foremost, so I won’t talk about her here.

• Blinding Obedience and Thalia, Heretic Cathar are the only non-removal cards I have here that slow down the opponent.

• Blood Artist goes well with Birthing Pod.

• Call the Gatewatch just tutors for a Planeswalker.

• Eladamri's Call gets us a creature.

• Enlightened Tutor gets us Birthing Pod or Path of Discovery

• Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper allows us to gain back the life we’ve lost to Birthing Pod and other sources.

• Lyra Dawnbringer also helps us gain back life.

• Serra Ascendant also also halps us gain back life.

• Spellbook allows us to keep out hand size larger than usual. It works well when I have lots of creatures entering the battlefield (March of the Multitudes, Leonin Warleader) with Huatli, Radiant Champion

• Thalia's Lancers allows us to get any legendary card.

• Vampiric Tutor allows us to get any card we want for the cost of 2 life.

• Voice of Resurgence is just pure value against Stax and other control decks.

• Worldly Tutor gets us a creature

Non-Counter Pump

• I’ve already talked about Trostani Discordant, Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and Angel of Invention, so I won’t talk about them here.

• Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite is at the top of my curve, and goes very well with Blood Artist.

Removal

I just have Anguished Unmaking and Utter End as very flexible removal.
