EDH Welder MUD

Commander / EDH*

Beware

NOTE: I just added some new cards to the deck, but haven't sorted out all the cuts. I need about 10, presently.

A good friend of mine has long wanted to play MUD in EDH. His one reservation was that he did not want to play Karn, Silver Golem as his Commander. Specifically, he wanted to play Goblin Welder, one of the best MUD enablers. We also knew we wanted to play Academy Ruins, another great enabler and to facilitate things like Mindslaver locks. Enter Nin.

We settled on UR based on the previously stated criteria, but originally the commander was superfluous. It started as Jhoira of the Ghitu as she furthered the MUD plan of cheating huge things into play on the cheap, but was built under the pretense that any UR Legendary Creature would work. As the deck evolved, we realized Nin had so much more to offer than Jhoira.

First of all, she is a Braingeyser that lives in the Command Zone. When your deck depends so heavily on strong artifacts, your draw engines are bound to suffer. Nin closes this hole while offering a whole host of other benefits.

Infinite mana is not an uncommon occurrence with this deck. Any well built deck should be able to win when it picks up its whole library and this is no exception. The burn ability is also relevant, not only for picking off annoying hatebears (such as Gaddock Teeg, but also for dumping artifact creatures into your graveyard for Welding whilst simultaneously drawing cards. Nin is not only a strong card advantage and spot removal engine, but she is also a combo piece herself.

Take a moment to read Nin, the Pain Artist carefully. Go ahead, Ill wait. The drawing is not a may. As I said, infinite mana is an easy sell with this list. Having that little Target player loses the game button is just all around handy to have.

To summarize, Nin turned out to be the right choice for her repeatable spot removal, card advantage engine, and combo potential.

This deck is not easy to pilot. There are a million ways to combo off, and occasionally you can just stumble onto one. The sheer number of tutors and redundant cards make everything very consistent. Every game Ive had infinite mana it has been on or before turn 5 (and it has been at least 80% of the games Ive played).

We can play the control game for quite a while by sheer nature of our one sided sweepers and card advantage engines, but this is truly a combo deck. You want as much mana as you possibly can at all times and you will likely win with one of the many, many combos available to you. Occasionally, you can Transmute a Blightsteel into play and go to town, but thats usually your plan B. I will outline a few of the major combos.

Nevinyrral's Disk + Darksteel ForgeBlow up everyone elses board every turn. Add Mycosynth Lattice to add insult to injury.

Grim Monolith/Basalt Monolith + Power ArtifactInfinite Mana! That was easy! Power Artifact really goes infinite with a bunch of cards.

Basalt Monolith + Rings of BrighthearthThis trick requires 5 mana to get going. Activate Monoliths untap ability and copy it with Rings. Rings ability resolves first, untapping Monolith. In response to the original activation, tap Monolith for mana. The original Monolith activation resolves, untapping it. If you tap the Monolith again you will have 6 floating, but you only need 5 to untap Monolith twice. Repeat for infinite mana. Add Sensei's Divining Top to the combo to draw your whole deck. Tap Top to draw a card, copy the ability with Rings. Draw a card, draw Top, cast Top, and do it again.

Sneak Attack/ Phantasmal Image + Palinchron Both cards give you a Palinchron for way less mana than normal. You float 7 mana, use 4 of it to bounce your Palinchron/Image, then use 1 or 2 of your 3 mana floating to do it again.

Sensei's Divining Top + Future SightDraw a card for 1. Add Etherium Sculptor or Cloud Key or Helm of Awakening to draw a card for 0 and pick up your whole deck.

Mind Over MatterThats pretty much all you need.

Metalworker + Staff of DominationWith three artifacts in your hand you generate infinite mana and then do what ever you want.
