Your opponent play creatures? What about spells? Surely he's got a land or two. Why not punish him for having the nerve to do such a thing?

Red has plenty of "punisher" type effects that tax or otherwise dissuade your opponents from taking certain actions. Of course, being a little more impulsive and unsubtle than, say, blue, red accomplishes this not by asking extra mana or drawing extra cards - it does so by flinging damage at your foe's face! Spellshock hurts anyone who plays a spell. Impatience shocks anyone who doesn't play a spell. Manabarbs ups the ante by poking anyone who so much as taps a land!

Now, a death of a thousand stings sounds kind of fun in a sadistic sort of way, but in a format where everyone starts with a whopping 40 life... well, it's really going to feel like a thousand stings if you hope to kill anyone off. That's where our man of the hour Torbran comes in. Any of your red cards that damage an opponent (or their creatures or planeswalkers!) has an extra two damage slapped on. That's more like it! For something that hits for a huge chunk of damage at once (such as Searing Wind or Urza's Rage) that increase seems fairly minor. For something that gives a little poke multiple times (such as Pyromatics or Flame Jab) suddenly you're tripling your damage.

Combine Torbran with your various punishing effects, then, and you're putting your opponents in a might tight spot. Activate an ability? Take four damage! Take a swing at me, will you? Here's three damage of your own! Manabarbs and Burning Earth become truly vicious, hitting your opponents for an astounding three damage every time they tap a land. And remember - Torbran only increases the damage dealt to your opponents, so symmetrical effects like Mana Barbs and Spellshock will only zap you for the regular amount. Gotta love nepotism!
