Only a madman could create such a door. Only an imbecile would open it.

Legends speak of a mage that devised an insidious plot: he would force his opponent into a situation in which their only option would be to activate a Door to Nothingness targeting themself.

Inspired by his inventive impishness, here is "There's the Door" -- EDH Edition.

Our objective is to produce a boardstate such that no one has any cards in hand, board or library except your opponents each having a Door to Nothingness , the mana to activate them, and the permanents that prevent them from otherwise losing the game.

We can accomplish this by generating infinite mana, draw, and spell-casts with Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal drawing the deck with Sliver Overlord + Mnemonic Sliver and subsequently Copy Artifact (Scepter) + Noxious Revival for infinite casts, enabling our construction of the Doors.

Once this is the case, the only option available to each opponent is to gaze into the Door until they choose to exit.

This deck poses an interesting riddle:

Approaching the construction of the Doors, once all of the opponents' cards are exiled, we still must prevent opposing Commanders from interfering when we give our opponents mana to use their Door. To solve this, we must find a way to create 3 Nevermore copies forbidding each Commander from being cast.

However, given that our mechanism of multiplying our enchantments is Fractured Identity , a clever set of opponents might all name "Fractured Identity" on each copy, forcing us to remove each copy before trying again. Another set of opponents might attack our looping mechanism, naming Noxious Revival, Sliver Overlord, and Dramatic Reversal. Adding to the complexity, if we manage to Fractured Identity a token, we get our first Nevermore, but 2 of our opponents receive another copy, increasing in layers as they remain on the board.

With the current decklist, given our opponents' libraries and boards are exiled and we have infinite mana, spell casts, and our library otherwise in hand, how can we create 3 Nevermore copies naming each opposing Commander?

Solution Show

(1) Assemble infinite mana

This step equates to "win the game". Assemble infinite mana of every color.

Alternatively you can draw your deck first and then assemble infinite mana:

(2) Draw your library

Using your infinite colored mana:

  • Cast your commander, Sliver Overlord

  • Use its ability to find Mnemonic Sliver and cast it

  • Sacrifice Overlord to the Mnemonic ability, drawing a card

  • Recast Overlord and repeat until you've drawn your library

At this point, cast Silence .

(3) Assemble infinite casts

Now assemble a mechanism that will let you cast any spell in your library as many times as you desire.

(4) Clear enemy boards

Your opponents should now have no board, hand, or library (and no options).

(5) Invoke the Door

(6) Obligate the Exit

We must ensure that commanders can't be cast after we pass. Create 3 Nevermore copies naming each opposing Commander.

Then:

At this point, there's nothing left but the rocks, locks, and Doors.

Your opponents have no choice but to exit.

“Be that word our sign of parting, Sliver fiend!” I shrieked, upstarting—

“Get thee back into the aether and the Dominarian shore!

"Leave no gilded bloom as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!

Leave my loneliness unbroken!—quit the space around my Door!

Take thy claw from out my heart, and take thy form from off my Door!"

Quoth the Sliver “Nevermore.”
