"My Name is Saskia, daughter of William Wallace."

Commander / EDH Aggro Casual Midrange

enter image description here

"HEY! YOU! What do you think you're doing, messing with those stupid scrolls? You're one of them sissy blue mages, aren't you? Well, I order you to drop those scrolls or I'm going to slice your throat open and parade your head! Scrolls are for cowards! We fight for blood! We fight for freedom! With my power, we can murder those who sit back in their petty thrones and get rich while loafing around like a bunch of corpses. They may take our lives but THEY WILL NEVER TAKE OUR FREEDOM!"

Time for some boring stuff... Show

Yesterday, it dawned on me that there are multiple ways to build Saskia the Unyielding. I'll outline them here.

Tokens: With Saskia's damage-doubling, you can send tokens at someone to deal massive damage. Mirror Entity and Craterhoof Behemoth are examples of finishers in the deck (though I cringe at the , however).

Sunforger-Voltron: Saskia is in the 3 best colors for Sunforger, opening options for a controllish build. Also, that +4/+0 boost can get Saskia to deal some serious damage quickly.

Actual Voltron: No brainer here. Suit up Saskia and watch as she murders opponents, even that cowardly pillowfort mage over there.

Token-Attrition: While you can go aggro, you can also play a control game with Grave Pact and its ilk (again, 3 of one color is problematic).

Then, obviously, there's Midrange/Stompy, which is this build. Which Saskia build is the best? Should I venture into these other ideas or just stick to one? Let me know in the comments. :)

Rage Reflection would be much better than the Blood Mist or Duelist's Heritage, Gratuitous Violence would be great especially since you are playing Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. There is also True Conviction. But other than that this deck is awesome, I can see shenanigans in this deck and I love it. It could easily take on some pretty competitive decks and win.

Berserkers' Onslaught is one cheaper than Rage Reflection, but of course doesn't work for blockers. But then, this deck doesn't look like it'll do a whole lot of blocking :-)

BrettonTheKid: Three of one color is cringe-worthy for me. Since I'm in 4 colors, I'm not as likely to get 3 of one color consistently. Only with testing will this remain to be seen. I had them in the deck originally but the 3-colored requirements was problematic so I removed them. In case you were asking about Avacyn, I was plotting to remove her for this reason. Oh, and Rage Reflection is already in the Maybeboard.

endersblade: True. I'd have to think about this one.

Looking at your land base I do not think you would have a hard time getting the mana for them, you have 6 filter lands, I have thrown things that require 3 of a type before and had pretty good luck, and that is in 5 color, You gotta Fling the Baby Child of Alara

November 7, 2016 9:01 p.m.

Phaetion says... #5

BrettonTheKid: Alright. I added both of them in.

I see you run a Hydra Omnivore....would be a shame if you were to... equip a Blade of Selves to it...hehehe

Also look into things like Boros Reckoner + Vigor , a single Blasphemous Act, Chandra's Ignition, Arcbond, or Fault Line-esque card could spell doom for an opponent when they have no creature and you have ALOT of BIG creatures.

Also Eldrazi Displacer to bounce Saskia the Unyielding to reset the targeted opponent if someone gets out of hand or they are dead and you need a new victim

And if 3 color cards are a problem, they shouldnt be. You have Chromatic Lantern, if you add an Enlightened Tutor youll never really have to worry about mana fixing.

Youre also running alot of lands that produce multiple colors or can filter its mana to be fixed to what you need.

KailDaemon: I already added a couple and kept Avacyn in. Then, looking at you first comment, that is a lot of cards to add. Any advice on what to remove?

Phaetion says... #10

KailDaemon: I added most of them and added Beacon of Unrest to the list of cards to remove.

November 8, 2016 3:11 p.m.

KailDaemon says... #11

What are you going to replace with the Beacon?

November 8, 2016 3:18 p.m.

Phaetion says... #12

KailDaemon: I already added Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord for the time being. Realistically, I need to add a Golgari card that suits the role. With the heavy hitters, Jarad might not be a bad idea was my thinking.

Hes a win if you can get lord of extinction big enough

November 8, 2016 3:37 p.m.

Phaetion says... #14

Or Malignus. And Kresh the Bloodbraided is in there too. I wonder if I should run Selvala, Heart of the Wilds and her stampede too.

November 8, 2016 3:51 p.m.

KailDaemon says... #15

Id run her stampede if anything

If you ever want to mix it up a bit, check out my saskia build and maybe you can find a new idea or two

Saskia Hates All

Brutal Hordechief seems like he could be really good in this deck. And Ankle Shanker can do a ton for evasion. I'd try to make room for those two.

November 14, 2016 9:02 a.m.

Phaetion says... #18

ive-been-degaussed: They're definitely good cards for a token variant of Saskia. Here, the drain effect from the Hordechief would be minimal while the Shanker's deathtouch will matter more on smaller creatures than bigger ones.

November 14, 2016 12:58 p.m.

I run Brutal Hordechief for the anti-blocking ability personally. Make sure you get that damage through.

LittleBlueHero: Well, I suppose.

Siege Rhino would be good in this ....lightning helix on a big beasty never hurt anyone

November 14, 2016 9:56 p.m.

How have this performed? I like this deck, but my meta have a lot of control players, which means lots of board wipes. Do you think it can stand a chance against that?

November 23, 2016 11:58 p.m.

Phaetion says... #23

tonybaker26: Ehh...there's better options, I think. Thanks though.

Pinkie_Satanas: IRL (which I can build)? I haven't touched it, though I considered it. To answer your real questions, I would main in stuff like Defense Grid or Price of Glory or anything that makes you flip off the counterspells. Grand Abolisher and City of Solitude are also good with this.

I really like this deck! I've been trying to build a Saskia deck similar to this, but a lot more creatures than this. I think I might try to replace a bunch with removal like this, because I have noticed when things get out of hand I only have one or two cards in the whole deck to answer it :/. +1!

December 13, 2016 12:59 a.m.

Phaetion says... #25

Podma101: Thanks. You could never have enough removal in some groups, so my tip would be to choose the ones that can target anything (or almost anything). Utter End and Maelstrom Pulse are perfect examples of this.

December 13, 2016 8:43 a.m.

Pinkie_Satanas: Dauntless Escort, Selfless Spirit, Ready / Willing, Boros Charm. Being able to grant your creatures indestructible is the best way to dodge mass removal.

December 13, 2016 11:54 a.m.

Phaetion says... #27

ive-been-degaussed: That is correct, and you gave me a couple new tools to try out in the Spirit and the split card. Thanks.

I was curious how this deck has been performing given this (or a similar) version? I see that your creatures are almost exclusively 4+ cmc. Does this tend to be too slow to make an impact; i.e you get caught off guard by faster decks or you slowly drop creatures mid/late game and they get removed one by one?

December 28, 2016 2:27 p.m.

Phaetion says... #29

Podma101: Speed has been somewhat of a concern but it's inherent with the deck's theme. It's kind of why I moved away from Saskia: She demands weenie aggro or (better yet) tokens. Xenagos, God of Revels does the job much better but the catch is over-reliance on him. Going tall is just my style. Going small for me requires too much setup for my tastes.

DoctorRouse says... #30

Why isn't Vigor in this deck???

March 3, 2017 3:37 p.m.

Phaetion says... #31

DoctorRouse: Vigor isn't in here because of the Triple Green. In a four-colored deck, I try to stay away from such color-intensive cards, having only one at most (covered by Avacyn, Angel of Hope).

SecondHorizon says... #32

I have to main things I think this list could improve on.

The first thing is the lack of ramp and the second thing is the lack of a seriously good early game. And i think there are some cards that can solve one of these problems and some cards that can even solve both. Gyre Sage ramps a lot in a deck relying on heavy-hitters and can sometimes even get in itself and Shaman of Forgotten Ways pushes out your 7-drops on turn 4 while providing a one-card-lategame-kill.

Cards like Managorger Hydra and Primordial Hydra can come out on turn 3 and are serious threats just a short time later. Anafenza, the Foremost hates on some of your opponents while also riding in along the assault. Vinelasher Kudzu can even hit the battlefield on turn 2. In addition to these cards I would just throw in Tainted Strike, Rubblehulk, Temur Battle Rage and Grafted Exoskeleton to end games quicker.

These would be my suggestions to start to make the deck more of a real threat to the other players before they really can start to deploy their gameplan. :) I hope they are of some use to you. :)
