Bant Merfolk deck with Derevi as commander.

Why use Derevi as a commander for a Merfolk deck?

I am using Derevi as commander for the color identity (white give us access to some support cards). Its tap/untap abilities can generate a lot of advantage, for example, untapping our lands after we cast spells on precombat main phase. Finally, Derevi can also be "played" at instant-speed, tapping any threat or untapping any resource when we want to.

Creatures section

Merfolks

• The deck uses lords like Master of the Pearl Trident, Merfolk Sovereign and Coralhelm Commander to grant our Merfolks a boost in power, in toughness and evasion (Islandwalk). We use cards that transforms lands into Islands, letting us attack directly opponents that aren't using U.

• Merfolk Looter acts as a great card-selector. The player can stack untap effects on him and control the next draws.

• Thada Adel, Acquisitor to steal Sol Ring and other artifacts, common cards in commander.

• Wake Thrasher can easily be a big beater, given the big number of permanents the deck can have.

• Rootwater Thief to exile opponents' combo pieces from the library.

Non-Merfolks

Despite being a Merfolk-tribal deck, it also can be considered a Wizard-tribal deck. Many of the Merfolk this deck has are also Wizards. This sub-type is very relevant, given that Derevi is a Wizard and this deck uses cards like Azami, Lady of Scrolls and Galecaster Colossus.

• We use Murkfiend Liege and Seedborn Muse to untap creatures and permanents. We can use Seedborn Muse to use Thrasios, Triton Hero's ability a lot of times, drawing a lot of cards and ramping a lot of lands.

• Seahunter can cheat a lot of creatures with all of the untap effects and big-mana generators of this deck. Some options for tutor is Mirror Entity to finish the game with combat damage, Tishana, Voice of Thunder for drawing cards from a populated board and lords like Master of the Trident for evasion.

• Craterhoof Behemoth in a big board usually is a win for us. It has haste and can buff all of our creatures (including itself) A LOT.

• Use tap/untap effects to draw cards with Azami, Lady of Scrolls and bounce back nonland permanents with Galecaster Colossus.

• Mana-sinkers like Thrasios, Triton Hero to use the mana the deck can provide with lands like Nykthos.

Non-creatures

• Holdout Settlement + Fallowsage / Surgespanner to facilitate their tap effects.

• Alchemist's Refuge to cast spells on instant speed and, in rare cases where the player wants to generate mana with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, they can cast spells in response to untap abilities, using mana that would be empty on mana pool on the postcombat main phase.

• Intruder Alarm to easily untap creatures for tap with effects like Azami, Lady of Scrolls's card draw or Galecaster Colossus's bounce.

• Beastmaster Ascension for sudden lethal combat damage.

• Cryptolith Rite to transform creatures in dorks.

• Glare of Subdual and Opposition to politics, disabling attackers and blockers.

• Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Dowsing Dagger   as big-mana producers. The merfolks have, in general, two mana symbols, and three of them is usually enough to make Nykthos strong.

• Big-draw creature-dependant cards like Kindred Discovery. In some situations, Dusk / Dawn acts like a card draw, returning almost all creature cards that is on the graveyard.

• Aquitect's Will and Tideshaper Mystic to transform opponent's lands into Islands and make merfolks unblockable with some lords like Master of the Pearl Trident.

• The deck uses two wipes: Austere Command, that lets the player choose what he/she wants to destroy, and Nevinyrral's Disk that can easily be untapped with Derevi.

• The untap effect works fine with Windbrisk Heights, and attack with three creatures is easy and common. The deck can easily play the Hideaway card on the same turn the land was played.

• Utility cards like counterspells, spot removals (Swords to Plowshares), boardwipes (Cyclonic Rift and Austere Command) and protection (Heroic Intervention).
