legendofa on What commanders do you want …

There's a lot of niche commanders now, and a lot of general use goodstuff commanders, but every so often I come up with a deck design that I really like, but there's no satisfying commanders for it.

This deck, Do Not Mistake Peace For Passivity, is a enchantments deck (not Voltron). There are a couple of options in the other trios, but not Naya.

Another deck idea, that isn't fully lined out yet, is Bant merfolk tribal, getting Sygg, River Guide, Stonybrook Schoolmaster, Vodalian Wave-Knight, and all the Ixalan merfolk together in a big pile of value. (Incidentally, Tuvasa the Sunlit is an enchantment commander and a Merfolk, but doesn't support either of these ideas.)

What niches have you found, that you want to see filled?

Hey, you're welcome.

If you're new to sideboarding then some advice is to start, build a sideboard of 15 cards that are good in broad matchups: control, midrange and aggro. These three archetypes can be considered super archetypes as most decks go into one of these. For control matchups more counterspells, noncreature removal, creature protection, Planeswalker hate. For midrange other creature removal, a creature board wipe. For aggro a bigger creature that's hard to remove, creature protection, some life gain.

You want to think about what strategies are going to be difficult for you to beat with Merfolk and use your sideboard to help against these strategies. You want to be attacking with Merfolk therefore opponent strategies that put a lot of creatures onto the battlefield as blockers especially token creatures can be difficult. Board wipes wreck little tribal creatures. Merfolk are small creatures, bigger creatures can be a problem. 4x Swords to Plowshares main deck helps a lot against big blockers, but some times you need an effect that removes more than one creature.

In your main deck you have several cards that I would consider sideboard cards, not cards that belong in the main deck because they're narrow. Wash Out is a hate card that belongs in the sideboard because you might be against a blue opponent and then it also bounces your Merfolk. However, it can be a game winning effect against a nonblue opponent who has a lot of blockers. Disenchant doesn't do anything if opponent isn't playing a problematic artifact or enchantment. Angelsong can deny a big swing of damage from attackers by opponent and then you swing back at them on your turn, but you don't need this effect main deck even with cycling.

If you know about the decks that you're against such as a playgroup of friends who you always battle then you can be much more specific in what cards go in the sideboard. Cards that are good against decks your opponents are playing. Cards in the sideboard can be much narrower for only certain matchups if you know of those matchups and are against that type of deck a lot.

If you can use some Merfolk as sideboard cards then that will help your strategy of tribal Merfolk. Tidebinder Mage is for against green or red midrange or aggro. Hullbreacher against control. Kopala, Warden of Waves can make it more difficult for opponent to target a Merfolk you control. Sygg, River Guide can protect from chosen color and make that Merfolk unblockable against that color. Master of Waves is great against red, having protection from red and against aggro it can create a token army of blockers. Judge of Currents can be a life gaining Merfolk to bring in against aggro.

Example of a budget tribal Merfolk sideboard:

Have you heard of the term "hate card"? A hate card is most of the time found in the sideboard because it's very good against a certain color/colors. The good hate cards are lower mana cost because then you're getting amazing value for the cost against that color. Tidebinder Mage is a Merfolk example of a hate card against green or red creatures, but you don't play it main deck because if you're not against an opponent who has a green or red creature then it doesn't do much and there's better two drop Merfolk to play. Blue Elemental Blast is an example of a powerful hate card against red. Celestial Purge is white's hate against black or red.

A hate card doesn't have to be against a certain color, you might want it to shut down an entire deck strategy. Grafdigger's Cage is hate against reanimation strategies where opponent is bringing any creature from their graveyard onto the battlefield. Pithing Needle can shut down a certain card such as a Planeswalker or anything nonland that has an activated ability. Echoing Truth can wreck tokens because all token creatures of the same types are the same name and when a token is bounced it ceases to exist in the game.

There are a number of commander pairings that I'd love to see be possible for a number of reasons.

First on the list is Birgi, God of Storytelling  Flip and The Reality Chip. Doesn't strike me as overly powerful, but it could be fun to run 2/3 of a Sensei's Top combo in the command zone. My gut tells me it wouldn't be quite as capable as the archetype already is with Elsha, but it would be a nifty pairing none the less.

Second on my list would be Gavi, Nest Warden and Rielle, the Everwise. Another nifty pairing where they play off each other's strengths. The Gavi+Library of Leng+Decree of Silence soft lock gets even better when it also draws a card each time you slap down an opponent's spell on their turn, exactly what a control deck like this needs to be effective. Doesn't change the deck any, just puts Rielle into the command zone for convenient access.

Sisay, Weatherlight Captain and Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful would be just too cute a pairing. The theme would be strong with this one.

Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca could be fun with Sygg, River Guide, Jori En, Ruin Diver or Dalakos, Crafter of Wonders to cram even more cool merfolk into merfolk tribal.

Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip and Tinybones, Trinket Thief seem like a match made in heaven. Ditto for Emry, Lurker of the Loch and Urza, Lord High Artificer.

Mina and Denn, Wildborn and Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait would be THE definitive "lands matter" commanders, right up my alley.

All of these seem like fun, none of these mashups present a true problem for the format in terms of play pattern powerlevels, but not all my wish list pairings are things that would play nice with the rest of the format.

Najeela, the Blade-Blossom and Plargg, Dean of Chaos  Flip/Derevi, Empyrial Tactician, for example, would break the entire format.

Yarok, the Desecrated + Omnath, Locus of Creation to cut out the Horde of Notions middleman and get roundly punched in the face.

On a more responsible note, Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca or Adrix and Nev, Twincasters + Sygg, River Guide would give the Bant Merfolk commander I think is sorely missing.

My first real commander deck and probably still my favorite is Gisela, Blade of Goldnight angels.

It's a tough decision though. I play a LOT of tribal, so I have a lot of choices, some mentioned here, some not. Back before the most recent Innistrad set, I used to run Tolsimir Wolfblood wolf tribal with elf support. I'm looking for a good Archer tribal commander but haven't found the right one yet. I built Wydwen, the Biting Gale faeries, Sygg, River Guide merfolk, Yisan, the Wanderer Bard beast/elf tribal, and just finished Sisay, Weatherlight Captain snow tribal. I tried Krond the Dawn-Clad Archon tribal, but it's just not there yet.

Hey! I really like your deck, it reminds me of my own Sygg, River Guide deck. Sygg, Freed from Control

With my build of the deck, I only use Merfolk, a True Merfolk tribal deck (with the exception of Seahunter as it's too good), even though some wizards would make the deck run a lot faster, I chose otherwise. Your mana base seems rather good, and most of your card choices seem pretty solid for good card removal and control.

However, I did notice that you aren't running Pemmin's Aura , which is functionally a second Freed from the Real .

Our decks are quite different, and yet similar due to Sygg's nature, I do quite like your build :)

DeinoStinkus, Azorius aggro would just be Merfolk tribal, with Sygg, River Guide. Or Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper

Yes! Reaper King! That card has always been close to my heart, so it's always great to see a deck for him.

I've brewed with it extensively, so I have some suggestions for you:

Due to all of the changelings, you can really abuse those creature types. Naban, Dean of Iteration will duplicate triggers with "scarecrows" and Rattlechains can grant them all flash.

Gilt-Leaf Archdruid , if it's within budget, allows for quite a bit of card draw and a win-condition attached to it.

Gisa and Geralf will be able to recur the changelings for later use.

Knight Exemplar is fantastic defense for your board, Azami, Lady of Scrolls can draw many cards, Sygg, River Guide can protect creatures, and Ingenious Infiltrator can be awesome if you start to swarm. With so many creatures, Call to the Kindred could be cute.

Harsh Mercy or Kindred Dominance can be largely one-sided wraths, so that's something to note.

Reaper King is a massive target whenever he hits the field, so it's important to have a few backup plans.

Good luck with Scarecrows and Vindicate EVERYTHING!
