Maybeboard

It's no secret that I like creatures that inherently achieve big piles of abilities, voltron-style. Odric, Lunarch Marshal is a solid commander-style attempt but he kind of needs a whole army to work. I like the fact that newcomer Rayami, First of the Fallen is instead a one-man army, selfishly hoarding all those keyword abilities for himself. He's also the first-ever green vampire, meaning we now have vampires of all colours, but that's beside the point.

I'm sure maximum competitive builds aim to just pick up flying and hexproof then run good stuff otherwise, but we're here to have fun. I want tons of abilities on an unstoppable force of destruction, and the creatures provide a suite of abilities to support that.

CARD HIGHLIGHTS:

Birthing Pod, Eldritch Evolution, Neoform, Prime Speaker Vannifar - You can't get those abilities without creatures dying, and the best way to facilitate that is to sacrifice them for some sort of benefit. All of these options not only kill off a creature of your choice, but they also bring in another of your choice to fill in whatever ability gaps are most pressing. Bontu the Glorified not only provides a handy way to sacrifice your other creatures, but she also holds Menace and the tantilizing Indestructible if you can find a way to kill her off. Being lands, High Market and Phyrexian Tower are hard to remove and reliable ways to ensure a sacrifice outlet.

Stonecoil Serpent, Mistcutter Hydra - Some creatures represent some truly handy abilities for your commander but need to die in order to pass them along. Others need no sacrifice outlet, coming into play as 0/0s and immediately transferring those handy abilities to Rayami. Newcomer Stonecoil Serpent is a dream come true, representing Reach, Trample and Protection on demand for zero mana!

Bribery - Did you know there are no creatures in blue, black, green or even colorless that natively have double strike? It's true. This is kind of a pain, as with 5 power, Rayami will take a ponderous five hits to kill anyone off. If any of your opponents are playing R/W, then, you can grab a double striker to feed to one of your various sacrifice outlets and run from there. Of course, you can also grab something like Akroma, Angel of Wrath or Sphinx of the Steel Wind and get a huge leg-up on abilities, or even grab some creature that's strong enough that you'd like to keep it around (perish the thought!)

Flash - Flash continues its long tradition of not being used as intended here, letting you slap the abilities of any creature in your hand onto Rayami at instant speed. Imagine Flashing in a Darksteel Myr in response to a boardwipe, or Glissa, the Traitor in response to a huge blocker. Of course, if you get truly lucky (or are clever with your tutors) you can perform the legendary Hulk Flash, dropping Protean Hulk and then fetching an entire suite of keyword abilities at a moment's notice. Imagine fetching Viscera Seer, Slippery Bogle, Vampire of the Dire Moon, Kefnet the Mindful and Stonecoil Serpent all in one go.
