Commander / EDH Counters GU (Simic)

Introduction

A twist on We're gonna need more dice. by LegitAstroBoy. Simic is my absolute favorite guild and I absolutely adore the evolve and graft abilities. Counters make my day. They're so fun to distribute and ramp up! It gets insane. So of course Vorel of the Hull Clade was a natural choice for my commander. I just love watching the growing sense of urgency and despair on my opponent's face when I tap him and sigh while getting out my box of D6's.

My natural affinity for Simic counter decks of course led me to get the idea for a Simic EDH deck. My friends have been pestering me to make a commander deck so I can play them (almost everyone in my playgroup had one but me). Which then led me to search for a good base from which I could start (I'm pretty noob at deck-building, unfortunately. Dx). I found LegitAstroBoy's deck and I said to myself, "this is a deck I could follow."

Eeeeeexcept not really. Because that deck has a lot of hard to find cards and a lot of expensive cards. Since I'm in between paychecks I was limited to what I had on me, what I could mooch from my friends, and what I could trade for. Before you lies my efforts at making my own simic counters deck. Please be gentle, my buttocks are sore.

Mana Production

This deck does many things well, one of which is producing mana. With Vorel out, Astral Cornucopia and Gyre Sage become mana-producing MONSTERS. There have been so many games where I've gotten one or the other up to the point where my opponent and I have just agreed to call it infinite.

What do you do with that much mana?

So many things. The various X cards like Ivy Elemental, Vastwood Hydra all come out as game-ending monsters that need to be answered or they end the game. You can spam Zameck Guildmage's ability (assuming you have enough of both colours) to give yourself massive draw power. You could also Swing with an innocuous Winged Coatl or 0/1 Cloudfin Raptor and pump it to game winning power with Nylea, God of the Hunt's active. With that much mana the possibilities are endless, given the right circumstances.

Stemming from that fact are these doubts: Sol Ring has actually been good to me and as has been pointed out it has a spot in every edh deck ever.

Win Conditions

These vary so much between games. Here are just a few that I've personally experienced

Updates Add

I replaced Astral Cornucopia with Everflowing Chalice because of its cheaper casting cost. It's not colorful, but when it's a copious amount of mana it usually doesn't need to be.

Bident of Thassa wasn't doing its job, likewise with Fog Bank, Exploration, Khalni Heart Expedition, Leyline of Lifeforce, Cloudfin Raptor, Hydra Broodmaster, and Venser's Journal.

I added Rhystic Study to replace the Bident, Clone to replace Fog Bank, Primordial Hydra to replace Cloudfin, and as far as the others go, I added Grindclock, Otherworld Atlas, Scavenging Ooze, Predator Ooze, Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip, and Chasm Skulker.

Tamiyo, the Moon Sage was taken back by the friend who lent her to me, so I had to replace her with something. Momir Vig, Simic Visionary took her place for the search ability.

Turn to Frog got replaced by its superior M15 countepart Polymorphist's Jest which has the added ability of piercing shroud and hexproof.

I finally got my hands on a Command Tower (lol).

And I acquired a Rings of Brighthearth in a recent trade. There goes my deck updates. Please leave some comments!
