Ludevic's Test Subject

Creature — Lizard

Defender

: Put a hatchling counter on Ludevic's Test Subject. Then if there are five or more hatling counters on it, remove all of them and transform it.

As your deck is based around Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker I'd recommend adding 4 of him.

Secondly I'd take out Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip he's just to slow. I tried to make him work and even with training grounds he's a large Mana dump and your opponent will just wait until he's either flipped or close to just remove him.

Thirdly, you need more draw spells. Control decks have some form of draw capabilities and your deck has 0. I'd recommend Opt Serum Visions or Expressive Iteration for starters.

Fourth The Scarab God is a good card but I'd either find a way to break his abilities or take him out. As of right now he's a large Mana dump and I'm not seeing any game enders.

Lastly I'd take out Slavering Nulls the odds that a 2/1 creature survives and makes a hit without any help is almost 0. I'd go with something more guaranteed liked Thoughtseize Duress or Inquisition of Kozilek. Hope this helps.

GrimlockVIII, I had a general rules question I haven’t been able to find a clear answer to. I’d like to run it by you, if you had a moment.

When a double sided card with Transform is put into the graveyard, is the transformed portion of that card also considered to be in the graveyard? Or is that side of the card considered nonexistent in all zones until it’s actually transformed and turned face up?

In short, if I put Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip into the graveyard with Stitcher Geralf , can I exile it and make a 13/13 token based off the 13 power of its transformed side, Ludevic's Abomination ? Geralf specifically says ‘Exile up to two creature cards put into graveyards this way.’ and then creates a token based off ‘the total power of the cards exiled this way.’ The transformed side of a double faced card is still the same physical piece of cardboard, but something tells me deep inside that that’s not how it works.

Also important to note: the triggered ability is part of Atla Palani, not the egg tokens she makes, which is why nothing happens if Atla Palani is not on the battlefield when the eggs die.

Related to this, it doesn't have to be one of Atla Palani's egg tokens necessarily in order to trigger her ability; any creature with the type "Egg" will trigger it. At the moment, this includes Dragon Egg, Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip, Mysterious Egg, Roc Egg, Rukh Egg, Summoner's Egg, and Chicken Egg if playing with Un-set cards, as well as anything with "all creature types" like the various Changelings and Mistform Ultimus. (Not all of the listed cards show "Egg" on the type line, but the Oracle text in the Gatherer includes it.)

Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip is an awesome Godzilla-esc creature. I'd also keep my eye on Ikoria. A set titled "Lair of Behemoths" has got to have some of what you're looking for.

It started with Hidden Strings and Darksteel Reactor because I liked the flow of Hidden Strings ciphered + mana-storage lands. Thrummingbird came along since its flying made it a good target for the Cipher while doubling my mana lands. I eventually looked for cooky counters to Proliferate (infect was a bit too strong for the multiplayer-casual environment I was building for and have yet to build a alt win-con deck) so I found Darksteel Reactor. came in because Dismantle- along with Pyromancer's Goggles and Ral Zarek (possibility of going infinite with ult and enough proliferation, plus his tap/utap +1 was great for mana rocks and the goggles). 1 Dismantle let me jump from 5 counters to 10 and a copied pair jumped that to 20 giving me a out-of-the blue insta win.

I never built the deck since Darksteel is a pricy card for my standards and a bit too threatening- i'd most likely get jumped the second I put 2-3 counters on it once my friend group knew I was running dismantle.

Then I found out proliferate was amazing with mana rocks that use counters like Everflowing Chalice and Astral Cornucopia. I still liked Ral's interaction with my mana rocks and thought Volt Charge would be fun with the goggles so I came to my current deck Untap X-Spells which proliferate-ramps mana to dump into Fireball-esqe spells for a finisher. Had to find an alt win con since one of our friends was bringing a player-hexproof deck which would render the game unwinnable but found some good allies in Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip and Slumbering Dragon. Plus, Manifold Key can give the big boi a backdoor.

Deck works alright but I usually have 15+ mana for a finisher but never draw one. End up passing mid-late game while topdecking and lose before the big zap. Figured Firemind's Research could give me a mana dump and carddraw and works nicely with Flux Channeler for a storm-like deck. I'll probably order 2 of each and drop the Thrummingbirds. Untap X-Spells Storm Prolif-TriggerI was wondering what I could accomplish if I put more eggs in the cantrip basket when I stumbled across your deck and found out ha!

Your deck reminds me of the Blistercoil Weird + Paradise Mantle decks- where you would cantrip all day then swing with him / Guttersnipe them down- but I think your engine is a little more fun. I wonder which solitare deck would win.

As an important side note, I almost exclusively play Blue/Red since I love those card the most and rarely look into the other colors so that greatly affected the cards I found and considered. With Green, going the Simic route with Evolve mechanics, +1/+1 counters, and Gilder Bairn would be pretty strong package for a Darksteel Reactor deck as well. And Black, as you found out, is great for getting a cheap Infect counter on someone.

I took another look at your deck this morning after a cup of coffee and if you're interested, this is what I think I would do.

Do away with the Contagion Engine . Far as I can see, they're the only reason you're running 25 lands, which isn't ideal when all of the rest of your spells are a cmc 2 and 3 primarily.

Once you've cut those, drop your land base to 20 instead of 25. If you're looking for another way to proliferate Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip go to 16 islands and throw in 4 Karn's Bastion .

Proliferating doesn't help Thing in the Ice  Flip but a great card for it would be Clockspinning it's a 2 for 1 on Thing in the Ice  Flip since it's and instant and it also has the ability that remove an ice counter. Plus it also interacts with Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip and Chasm Skulker .

After that I would bump up to a full playset of Remand and add another Serum Visions .

Don't know if this is good advice or not, but you're getting it anyways. If you decided to make the changes, let me know how play testing goes
