Hey! My name is Reto and this is my Lyzolda EDH/commander deck. It started out as my first EDH deck overall and evolved over many years and iterations into the current one, which is the most potent version of it so far. The deck is capable of explosive wins, but can also play a grindier game. Although it is pretty strong I would not, however, categorise it as competitive deck, mainly due to the fact that it still relies on Lyzolda's ability as a card draw engine, which simply is too costly by competitive means.

You might like this deck if you:

  • like straight infinite combos that are able win the game on the spot
  • like fast artifact acceleration
  • like to sacrifice a lot of creatures
  • like reanimation strategies
  • like to have your general as an integral part of the game

You might avoid this deck if you:

  • need to be able interact with your opponents (are a blue mage at heart)
  • your first and only priority is to win (are a blue mage at heart)
  • want to attack with creatures (are a green mage at heart)
  • loathe infinite combos
  • don't want to be dependent on your graveyard

Game Plan:

The deck is basically set up to profit from Lyzolda's ability in order to find a game winning combo (see below).

Bloodghast Engine: Bloodghast is the main fuel for Lyzolda or any other ability that needs to sacrifice a creature. All the cheap tutors such as Entomb , Vampiric Tutor or Imperial Seal are great to get it asap. Furthermore, the fetch lands provide two sacrifices and also a way to instantly get Bloodghast back into play if your graveyard is getting exiled. Most of this is also true for Nether Traitor , although his ability is not free and dependent on another creature dying.

These cards are specifically to abuse the constant sacrificing of Bloodghast or Nether Traitor :

Finally, it is also nice to be able to dump it with the various looting effects, essentially without losing a card.

Self Mill: The other strategy relies on flipping the deck into the graveyard as fast as possible and use on of the incorporated reanimation combos to win. Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed allows to get the all of the crucial cards - Animate Dead or Necromancy (for Worldgorger combo); Living Death and Yawgmoth's Will to basically cast your graveyard using Paradox Engine - back, so with a reanimation spell and sufficient mana, this should close the game immediately. Alternatively, Dread Return on Xiahou Dun provides an even cheaper way. This line of play needs, however, a land drop (for Bloodghast ), (for Reassembling Skeleton ) and another creature.

There are two parts that support this plan:

  • Mesmeric Orb + Basalt Monolith to instantly flip your library into the grave. This line of play allows a guaranteed kill with the following requirements, no cards in hand needed:
    • a land drop for Bloodghast
    • for Reassembling Skeleton
    • for Lyzolda
    • for Animate Dead on Worldgorger Dragon
    • => total of land drop + . This amount can be reduced by the given situation such as reanimation spells in hand or other creatures on the battlefield (for Dread Return). Caution: It is mandatory to have Xiahou Dun in the graveyard at this point to get an Animate Dead -effect (for Worldgorger combo) and/or Yawgmoth's Will / Living Death (to actually win)
  • Doom Whisperer to put as many cards from your library into the grave using life points as resource i.e. 1 card / l:Bife point.
  • I'm still trying to find a way to incorporate Altar of Dementia , but at the moment I don't see it happening because it is not enough efficient. This may change if I find an interaction that allows me to use it to mill huge parts of the deck.

Winning:

Combos: Ashnod's Altar + Nim Deathmantle

  • + Murderous Redcap = infinite Damage
  • + Sengir Autocrat / Marsh Flitter = infinite colourless mana
  • => + Lyzolda = Draw Deck
  • => + Judith / Flayer of the Hatebound = infinite damage

Ashnod's Altar + Pitiless Plunderer + Reassembling Skeleton

  • infinite colorless mana
  • + Judith / Flayer of the Hatebound = infinite damage
  • => + Lyzolda = Draw Deck

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Free Sac (Ashnod's Altar / Viscera Seer)

Razaketh

Worldgorger Dragon + Animate Dead / Necromancy + another creature in the graveyard
