My cEDH take on Niv-Mizzet Reborn from War of the Spark, when the cEDH subreddit realized he's basically a more consistent General Tazri . Based on: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/food-chain-niv/ Essentially the deck is composed of EDH staples from all colours with the best tutors and disruption available to assemble and protect the infamous Food Chain + Cast From Exile (CFE) creatures infinite. Said creatures are Misthollow Griffin , Squee, the Immortal , and Eternal Scourge . To recap, the combo is simple; cast Food Chain , cast one of the above creatures, exile said creature with Food Chain to net that creature's cmc of mana + 1, cast 'em again, repeat ad infinitum for infinite creature mana. This is the most difficult part of playing the deck since once people realize you are prepping the infinite, you will likely encounter hate from the entire table in their attempt to stop you.

This deck is largely focused on the most by proportion, then and in roughly that order as combo pieces, tutors and wincons, with some tax and protection pieces and in the least proportion but having a key potential combo piece.

Having access to every good tutor available allows us to flexibly find the pieces we need. Enlightened Tutor , Demonic Tutor , and Vampiric Tutor let us directly find Food Chain or whatever we need for any situation. Worldly Tutor lets us locate a CFE creature or bi-colour wincon of our choice, or if worst comes to worst, a mana dork like Noble Hierarch or even Riftsweeper to call back Food Chain from exile.

Perplex directly transmutes for Food Chain , and Muddle the Mixture transmutes for Demonic Tutor or any 2cmc thing of your choice. Foresight and Manipulate Fate both let you put CFE creatures in the exile zone and also provide card draw, which is a nice benefit while accomplishing one of the deck's main goals so you can focus on finding Food Chain . Lim-Dul's Vault is also an exceptional tutor, being able to sift through the entirety of your deck for just and some life.

Chrome Mox is a particularly good thing to find if you happen to have a CFE creature in hand, exiling it for you for free and being a mana rock at the same time. Loses usefulness if that CFE happens to be Eternal Scourge , though, since it doesn't have a colour and the mox will just end up sitting there, unable to produce any mana. Misthollow Griffin can be pitched via Force of Negation , Force of Will and Misdirection as well, due to being blue.

Necropotence is an odd case as a pseudo-tutor; the card draw provided is fantastic, obviously, but the drawback of having to exile anything we discard can actually be used as an advantage if we draw into a CFE creature. A bit risky but the potential advantage Necro can provide outside of looking for a CFE creature to exile is too immense to ignore, even with that casting cost.

Lastly, we have the two all in exiler tutors, Tainted Pact and Demonic Consultation . These cards are high risk and you can end up decking yourself with the latter, but can pay off greatly with a much quicker path to a win, potentially finding you Food Chain and exiling a CFE creature simultaneously for just a at instant speed. These also work as pinch tutors if you are desperate for a particular tool and nothing else is available; just watch out if you name your card with Demonic Consultation and it's part of the first 6 exiles.

We have the best disruption and countermagic available to protect the combo and ensure it goes off without a hitch. Spells like Mana Drain , Force of Will , Swan Song and the classic Counterspell along with newcomers Force of Negation and Dovin's Veto all give us hard answers to disruption. Ashiok, Dream Render is a hard stop on oppenents searching for answers while simultaneously taking care of graveyards. Pact of Negation and Flusterstorm are extremely good for when we reach our combo turn, as Pact is free and Flusterstorm becomes nigh uncounterable once the combo has been performed.

Hall of Heliod's Generosity , Noxious Revival and Riftsweeper give us extra chances if Food Chain or any other important card is discarded, destroyed, or exiled.

For stuff like Rule of Law , Torpor Orb , Pithing Needle , and Suppression Field that would put this combo to sleep, we have access to Abrupt Decay , Nature's Claim , and Assassin's Trophy from the green side of artifact and enchantment destruction, and Vandalblast on the red side. Enchantments or permanents that disrupt or abuse ETB triggers (like Hushbringer )are this deck's biggest weakness, and must be dealt with as soon as possible in order to combo off without a hitch.

Lastly, casting either of the one mana suppression spells, Silence or Veil of Summer will make it that much harder for our opponents to do anything to stop us. Silence is an outright win if allowed to resolve, and Veil of Summer can be cast in response to a counterspell targeting Food Chain , allowing us to play completely on offense by making everything uncounterable for our winning turn. Teferi, Time Raveler is also an amazing card, being an insane control Planeswalker that acts as a semi-permanent Silence while also allowing us on his uptick to cast sorceries at instant speed, which can have much more use than one would think.

Without casting Niv-Mizzet Reborn at all, here are some preliminary wincons:
  1. With Laboratory Maniac out, casting Demonic Consultation (naming something we don't own in this deck like Lightning Bolt )or Tainted Pact , exiling your whole library on the end step before your turn begins and winning the game. This will most likely require protection, have Force of Will , Misdirection or Pact of Negation ready.
  2. Altar of the Brood is out and you execute the Food Chain infinite, instantaneous mass mill
With the Food Chain infinite performed as mentioned before, we have access to infinite creature mana. The next step is to cast Niv-Mizzet Reborn , who's ETB trigger will allow us to look at the top 10 cards of our library, and let us put one card of any bi-colour combination in our hand. For simplicity's sake (since they wrote the text in a confusing manner), it essentially means that if you already have located a card with 2 colours (i.e ), you can't put another one in your hand with the same colour identity; so I can't put both Dovin's Veto and Teferi, Time Raveler , for instance, in my hand off the top 10 cards looked at from a single casting of Niv-Mizzet.

...but despite all that, we can exile Niv-Mizzet Reborn to the command zone with Food Chain and simply cast him again to look at the next 10 cards. The deck then becomes a matter of searching for a bi-colour wincon of whatever is available to us with infinite recasts of either it or Niv-Mizzet Reborn . These include:

  1. Sparkcaster , stacking the triggers of dealing 1 damage to a player and it's second ability to return itself to your hand, infinitely recasting it.
  2. Circu, Dimir Lobotomist , with infinite recastings of Niv-Mizzet Reborn to mill everyone similar to Altar of the Brood .
  3. Corpse Knight for a Blood Artist style life drain with infinite recasts of Niv-Mizzet Reborn .
