Notorious Assassin

Creature — Human Spellshaper Assassin

(2)(Black), Tap, Discard a card: Destroy target nonblack creature. It can't be regenerated.

I would suggest an option that includes and , with as a possible third color.

isn't great. Mageta the Lion is a repeatable board wipe, and the other two I would consider are Avenger en-Dal and Devout Witness as targeted removal options.

has a couple of interesting control options. Waterfront Bouncer, Trickster Mage, and maybe Alexi, Zephyr Mage are passable tempo options, Stronghold Biologist and Stronghold Machinist are more color-heavy, and Dreamscape Artist hits color fixing and ramp, unusual for blue.

Spellshapers are generally mana-heavy, but Undertaker gives you a lot of freedom in what you discard, allowing you to switch cards in your hand and graveyard as needed. Notorious Assassin and Greel, Mind Raker are further control options.

offers mostly burn and evasion. Seismic Mage is repeatable land destruction, and Hammer Mage eats artifacts.

is, as always, the best at color fixing, with Greenseeker, Harvest Mage, and Silverglade Pathfinder. Rushwood Herbalist and Dawnstrider protect your creatures, and Jolrael, Empress of Beasts works well with the red options.

The first thing I would recommend is finding a way to copy your namesake card the turn it's cast. Copies aren't cast, so both will resolve! It's pretty expensive, so having onboard ways are the best. Primal Amulet  Flip is probably the best. If you utilize spell based ramp and tutors, you should be able to flip it. Swarm Intelligence , The Mirari Conjecture could also work.

Since you're not planning on using your hand or lands into the late game, you might as well have onboard tricks that use those resources.

To use your hand, you could play Rix Maadi, Dungeon Palace , Words of Waste , Null Brooch , Restore Balance , Jolrael, Empress of Beasts , Mageta the Lion , Stronghold Machinist , Stronghold Biologist , Greel, Mind Raker , Alexi, Zephyr Mage , Notorious Assassin , Knollspine Invocation , Pyromancy , and Magus of the Balance .

To wreck everyone else's hand Mindslicer , Bottomless Pit , Creeping Dread , Necrogen Mists , and Oppression work.

To destroy lands, you could use Desolation , Destructive Flow , and Mana Vortex .

Your friend misunderstands what a "mana ability" is. A mana ability is an ability that makes mana (Elvish Mystic, Inspiring Vantage, etc.), not an ability that costs mana. It's true that no one can respond to mana abilities, but Notorious Assassin doesn't have any mana abilities. It just has a regular activated ability, and any player is allowed to make responses to it.

I think the confusion here stems from misunderstanding what a mana ability is; while it's true that mana abilities can't be responded to, Notorious Assassin's ability is not a mana ability and you can absolutely respond to it with Vapor Snag. Mana abilities are abilites that create mana and don't have a target, such as Elvish Mystic's ability or the ability of an Island to create mana.

You can also find the comprehensive rules on the MTG site here, although personally I find it easiest to search MTG Salvation for a concept and it'll have the relevant rules on the page, so for example here's the page on mana abilities.

This is not true, the Vapor Snag, since it is an instant, just like stifle, can respond to the Notorious Assassin.

Hello, my friend believes that ALL mana abilities can't be responded to except for stifle, and when I responded to his Notorious Assassin destroying my Voiceless Spirit , I used Vapor Snag to return it to my hand, protecting it from destruction. He thinks this can't be done and nothing can be used in response to his assassin's ability. Is this true or not? Where can I look for the official rules of MTG updated to Kaladesh? Thank you for your time.

I'm currently working on a Gitrog deck as well. I was just introduced to MTG by my girlfriend like 3 months ago and this is my first attempt at a Commander deck. Anyway I have Golgari Grave-Troll, Golgari Thug, and Golgari Brownscale (could get you from 1 life to +40 in a pinch) in there, all dredge cards. Also I've read around about Devoted Druid + Quillspike + Jarad insta win. And if you were to dredge those cards if you had a Necrotic Ooze you can just pull off the win. Also Wild Mongrel and Notorious Assassin. Also for artifacts I got Whispersilk Cloak (putting on Gitrog), Thought Vessel (which would go great with Psych Crawler. and a Grimoire of the Dead. Also threw in a plauge boiler for the lulz.

OK, here goes. Bare in mind, these are just suggestions. If you take them, you don't have to implement them overnight.

Artifacts: cut Necrogen and Sunbeam Spellbomb, Wanderer's Twig and Traveler's Amulet. -4 Add Orzhov Signet, Orzhov Cluestone, Orzhov Keyrune and Commander's Sphere. Sol Ring/Solemn Simulacrum are good too.

Creatures: cut everything but Cliffhaven Vampire. You can maybe keep Auramancer and Bog Initiate. -10 Add-o boy, where to begin?-Crypt Ghast, Pontiff of Blight, Felidar Sovereign, Zulaport Cutthroat, Sun Titan, Emeria Shepherd, Fleshbag Marauder, Merciless Executioner, Dark Impostor, Sangromancer, Notorious Assassin, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Guul Draz Assassin, Falkenrath Noble, &c. &c. I'm really going to try to play up your life gain. For some ramp, Kor Cartographer, Knight of the White Orchid, and Oreskos Explorer are good.

Enchantments: cut, well, almost everything. Arrest is good and Angelic Accord is beautiful here! -7 Add Dictate of Heliod, Animate Dead, Dictate of Erebos, Exquisite Blood (which can go infinite with Sanguine Bond effects), Oblivion Ring, Greed/Phyrexian Arena, Quarantine Field, Erebos, God of the Dead; I think you get the idea.

Instants: Cut-screw it-Keep Beacon of Immortality, Congregate, and War Report. -10 Add Martial Coup, Riot Control, Swords to Plowshares, Hero's Downfall, Rout, Exsanguinate. (Instants are hard in EDH, particularly in W. You'll want to kill things mostly.)

Lands: Cut some basics. Add Bojuka Bog, Crypt of Agadeem, Mortuary Mire, Tainted Field, Vault of the Archangel, Starlit Sanctum, Temple of Silence, New Benalia, Orzhov Guildgate, Orzhov Basilica, Scoured Barrens... Lands that make both your colors will go a long way. You'll want to end up around 36-37 lands total.

Sorceries: You can keep Demonic Tutor and, maybe, Armageddon. Cut the rest. (This section needs revising far less than the other). Add Wrath of God, Unburial Rites, Ruinous Path, Malicious Affliction, Cleansing, Mutilate, Killing Wave, Extinction, Demonic Collusion/Diabolic Tutor/Dark Petition, Tempt with Immortality.

The reason I suggest cutting some of the more expensive and "better" cards is because of the sheet amount of revisions I think you'll need to make. Also, you don't have to drop $40+ on a Damnation when Wrath of God is, what, .50?

I'm a huge fan of Demonic Tutor, but I don't think you really need it. If you have it, by all means, run it. I suggest Cleansing over Armageddon because, well, lifesteal. You should also look at other lists to see what those people have thought of or learned. Archaesus is a friend of mine who is working on Ayli as well.

Hope this isn't too much to compute... :/
