Alexi, Zephyr Mage Discussion

Thanks a lot, DrukenReaps and multimedia! I love Linessa, Zephyr Mage 's art and obscurity, but you are correct that Alexi, Zephyr Mage would be more effective in this build. Plus her art is awesome and she is also pretty obscure, so I am going to go ahead and make the switch. Of the 3 people that gave me recommendations, all 3 recommended that I drop the planeswalkers, so I am going to do that and ditch the cards that fetch them too. Definitely need Tidespout Tyrant and Temporal Adept in there! I meant to include both of them from the start, but totally forgot about them. Thanks for reminding me!

This is pretty cool looking! My first suggestion would be to replace your commander, Linessa, Zephyr Mage , with Alexi, Zephyr Mage . She is far more efficient being able to bounce one creature for and one additional creature for every additional you pay. You do have to discard cards when you use her but this deck should keep your hand pretty well stocked.

I usually only run 35 lands myself so you could drop 3 snow lands to get closer to a legal deck size. Some other potential removals for consideration:

Mu Yanling , Jace, Ingenious Mind-Mage , Sower of Temptation , Portal Mage , Master of Waves , Heidar, Rimewind Master .

Alexi the Banisher ( Alexi, Zephyr Mage )

Legendary Planeswalker - Alexi

+1: Draw a card, then discard a card.

-3: Return two target creatures to their owners' hands.

-9: Each opponent chooses two permanents they control. Return each permanent not chosen this way to its owner's hand.

Starting loyalty: 4

Create a card that would have inspired Magus of the Unseen , to bring it close to the other Magus creatures.

The first thing I would recommend is finding a way to copy your namesake card the turn it's cast. Copies aren't cast, so both will resolve! It's pretty expensive, so having onboard ways are the best. Primal Amulet  Flip is probably the best. If you utilize spell based ramp and tutors, you should be able to flip it. Swarm Intelligence , The Mirari Conjecture could also work.

Since you're not planning on using your hand or lands into the late game, you might as well have onboard tricks that use those resources.

To use your hand, you could play Rix Maadi, Dungeon Palace , Words of Waste , Null Brooch , Restore Balance , Jolrael, Empress of Beasts , Mageta the Lion , Stronghold Machinist , Stronghold Biologist , Greel, Mind Raker , Alexi, Zephyr Mage , Notorious Assassin , Knollspine Invocation , Pyromancy , and Magus of the Balance .

To wreck everyone else's hand Mindslicer , Bottomless Pit , Creeping Dread , Necrogen Mists , and Oppression work.

To destroy lands, you could use Desolation , Destructive Flow , and Mana Vortex .

SynergyBuild Okay, well, you absolutely started it, but, fine, whatever. I stand by my deck, I think it's pretty good for what it is, though it could maybe do with a few small adjustments (trust me, I've combed through Gatherer for every 1-power black/artifact creature in the game several times, I used to play cards like Abyssal Gatekeeper and Nezumi Bone-Reader but cut them because the list was getting pretty tight, and I've considered the ramp package quite a bit).

I don't really care about this any more, honestly. If you really want to say that Nath of the Gilt-Leaf and Karametra, God of Harvests are better than Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker , and that Shirei is on par with Alexi, Zephyr Mage , be my guest. I still think he's tier 3, though.

Rogue_Toaster I'm not sure how many of them are really worth it but I've been eyeballing a few for awhile. In theory they are pretty nice since you just cage whatever is discarded. I like Hammer Mage and Alexi, Zephyr Mage. Even Urborg Syphon-Mage and Dreamscape Artist might be decent.

There could be some other nice ones like Stronghold Machinist that you mentioned.

I am more interested in adding additional "card advantage". Something like Stitcher Geralf would likely be a better inclusion than most spellshapers since you have the potential to get into more cage targets faster.

The discard part of their cost is neither advantageous nor disadvantageous as long as you discard something that could be caged.

Also what are your thoughts on cards with the "spellshaper" creature type, such as Stronghold Machinist and Alexi, Zephyr Mage. IE, cards that discard cards for good effects on a cage-able body, since most of the discard fodder can in itself be caged
