Mageta the Lion Discussion

This whole scenario gives me 4th-grade playground flashbacks.

“I got you with my machine gun that fires nukes!”

“Nuh-uh! I had my super ultra shield on so you can’t get me!”

As for your post, if this manchild of a friend wants the game to go long so that he can get off to his starter-pack green rares, you can go long, too. Because you can draw two cards per turn, Mageta the Lion is a great board wipe plus win-con. The other three cards can be a counterspell, an artifact/enchantment hate card, and possibly a reanimation spell if you want to go deep on the Mageta discard ability

This deck doesn't have boardwipes for people to hate you. Also doesn't have enough BS creatures that survive, which is critical for max hatred. Also, I'm assuming this is 1v1, which significantly decreases the amount of hate. It's cute, but it's WAYYYYYYYY too nice. If you really want people to suffer, I would recommend building around Avacyn, Angel of Hope in EDH for your opponents to hate you and have a "symmetrical" effect each time, or Mageta the Lion if you don't really care about your opponents complaining about your board and are willing to just make the world suffer. For a similarly infuriating deck, I'd recommend Grand Arbiter Augustin IV and Numot, the Devastator stax in which case your opponents just don't play magic instead of getting to not have their stuff matter.

The first thing I would recommend is finding a way to copy your namesake card the turn it's cast. Copies aren't cast, so both will resolve! It's pretty expensive, so having onboard ways are the best. Primal Amulet  Flip is probably the best. If you utilize spell based ramp and tutors, you should be able to flip it. Swarm Intelligence , The Mirari Conjecture could also work.

Since you're not planning on using your hand or lands into the late game, you might as well have onboard tricks that use those resources.

To use your hand, you could play Rix Maadi, Dungeon Palace , Words of Waste , Null Brooch , Restore Balance , Jolrael, Empress of Beasts , Mageta the Lion , Stronghold Machinist , Stronghold Biologist , Greel, Mind Raker , Alexi, Zephyr Mage , Notorious Assassin , Knollspine Invocation , Pyromancy , and Magus of the Balance .

To wreck everyone else's hand Mindslicer , Bottomless Pit , Creeping Dread , Necrogen Mists , and Oppression work.

To destroy lands, you could use Desolation , Destructive Flow , and Mana Vortex .

The Blind Samurai

Legendary Creature - Human Samurai

First Strike, Vigilance

: Prevent all damage the source of your choice would deal to The Blind Samurai. If damage is prevented this way, The Blind Samurai deals that much damage to the target of your choice.

A perfect counter to any long as there's only one.

Make a spellshaper of some sort, ex Mageta the Lion is a spellshaper for Wrath of God.

I like were this is going and it helped me open to new ideas.

Considering this is for EDH there are always a multitude of ways to do the same thing, it is a given that some cards are better then others. Incidentally there are times you may want the so called "down side" wipes if they play into your strategy such as Mageta the Lion, for decks like Karador. Most decks may have no use for them but others may find them perfect. Either way it is dependent on meta.

Even more problematic then creatures, at times, can be other permanents like artifacts and enchantments. Some colors are proficient at wiping these like Bane of Progress. I just feel they need more representation although there are great universal ones in this list like Oblivion Stone and Nevinyrral's Disk.

greatgoofini it is useful for all of that. However, it's not a card that can truly help me, outside of black, in the mid to late game to take down my opponents. If they have a sac outlet set up I'd rather force them to use it with Mageta the Lions effect and end it right there.

I love the reference to Mageta the Lion.

But I wonder if and how Teferi will phase Zhalfir back in.

Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Comeuppance, Rout, and Settle the Wreckage would give you some good instant-speed removal, and Banishing Light and Cast Out would give you extra O-Ring effects for pesky permanents. Maybe also a Reconnaissance, Serra's Blessing, and/or Teferi's Protection to smooth out combat.

Mageta the Lion might also be a helpful honorary cat.

Have fun playing!
