Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver — Zombie Engine Combo

Game Plan

The deck has two primary modes:

Turbo: Use fast mana, rituals, tutors, and cheap interaction to assemble a Zombie combo as quickly as possible. Wilhelt is not required for many of these lines.

Grind: Deploy Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, Necropotence, Undead Augur, or Wilhelt and accumulate resources while opponents fight over early wins. Once established, convert those resources into a protected combo attempt.

Do not cast Wilhelt automatically. If he isn't immediately useful, develop your hand and interaction instead.

Opening Hands

Ideal Hand

A strong opener generally contains:

  • 2+ mana sources
  • Fast mana or a ritual
  • Tutor or card-advantage engine
  • Interaction
  • Combo piece or a way to find one

Example:

Underground Sea Polluted Delta Lotus Petal Mystic Remora Gravecrawler Vampiric Tutor Force of Will

This is excellent.

Remora generates early advantage, Gravecrawler is already available as an engine piece, Vampiric Tutor finds whatever part of a combo is missing, and Force protects against an opposing win.

Early Game Ideal Cards

Mystic Remora / Rhystic Study — Early card advantage.

Vampiric Tutor / Demonic Tutor / Imperial Seal — Turn an incomplete hand into a threatening one.

Entomb — Frequently functions as another copy of Gravecrawler.

Gravecrawler — One of the most important combo pieces in the deck.

Phyrexian Altar — The premier sacrifice outlet and mana engine.

Dark Ritual / Culling the Weak / Mana Vault / Moxen — Allow extremely explosive development.

Primary Combo Lines

Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar

Have Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + another Zombie.

  1. Sacrifice Gravecrawler to Phyrexian Altar for B.
  2. Cast Gravecrawler from the graveyard using that B.
  3. Repeat.

This produces infinite:

  • Zombie casts
  • ETBs
  • Deaths
  • LTBs
  • Sacrifices

Add Diregraf Captain, Plague Belcher, or Blood Artist to kill the table.

Wilhelt can also generate additional Zombie tokens throughout applicable versions of the loop.

Warren Soultrader + Gravecrawler

  1. Sacrifice Gravecrawler to Warren Soultrader.
  2. Pay 1 life and create a Treasure.
  3. Sacrifice the Treasure for B.
  4. Cast Gravecrawler from the graveyard.
  5. Repeat.

With Diregraf Captain, Plague Belcher, or Blood Artist, the loop kills the table.

Wilhelt + Poppet Factory

Transform Poppet Stitcher into Poppet Factory.

Factory causes creature tokens you control to lose their abilities. Therefore, Zombies created by Wilhelt no longer have decayed.

With Wilhelt + Factory + another Zombie:

  1. Sacrifice a nontoken Zombie.
  2. Wilhelt creates a Zombie token.
  3. Factory removes decayed from that token.
  4. Sacrifice the new Zombie.
  5. Wilhelt replaces it.
  6. Repeat.

The sacrifice outlet determines the result:

Phyrexian Altar → Infinite colored mana + ETB/death/sacrifice triggers.

Altar of Dementia → Mill opponents.

Blasting Station → Infinite damage.

Carrion Feeder → Infinite ETB/death/sacrifice triggers and arbitrarily large Feeder.

Viscera Seer → Infinite scry.

Add a drain payoff to any applicable infinite death loop to kill the table.

Rooftop Storm Lines

Rooftop Storm + Gravecrawler + Carrion Feeder

Cast Gravecrawler for 0 → sacrifice → recast → repeat.

Add a death payoff to win.

Other sacrifice outlets can convert the same recursion into mana, mill, damage, or other resources.

Backup Win

Thassa's Oracle

Thassa's Oracle + Demonic Consultation

or

Thassa's Oracle + Tainted Pact

This is the emergency win condition when the Zombie engine is unavailable, graveyards have been shut down, or Oracle presents the cleanest opportunity.

Tutor Priorities

Don't tutor for a predetermined combo every game. Find whichever piece creates the shortest route from the cards already available.

As a general rule:

Have Gravecrawler? Look toward Phyrexian Altar, Warren Soultrader, or a payoff.

Have Phyrexian Altar? Entomb/tutor Gravecrawler.

Have Poppet Stitcher? Look toward Wilhelt + an appropriate sacrifice outlet.

Have Wilhelt + Factory? Tutor the outlet that most directly wins.

Graveyard hate stopping everything? Pivot toward Oracle + Consultation/Pact.

Need to survive? Tutor interaction instead of greedily forcing a combo.

Playing Wilhelt

Wilhelt is not required to play the deck.

Don't waste resources turboing him onto the battlefield unless he advances your position.

Cast him when:

  • You have Zombies ready to sacrifice.
  • You can exploit his replacement bodies.
  • You need a grind engine.
  • You are assembling a Poppet Factory combo.
  • The game has slowed enough for his value to matter.

Remember his end-step ability as well. A disposable Zombie can become a card, and sacrificing a nontoken Zombie may create a decayed replacement through Wilhelt before the draw resolves.
