I present to you: ‘My Devin Townsend Project’, a Commander deck dedicated to my love for Devin Townsend as a person, musician and an inspiration in life.

The deck is a tribute to Devin Garrett Townsend. Everything has been hand-selected. Every card, every artwork, every nickname and every custom flavour text. It aims to reflect Devin Townsend in all his facets through all the different artworks, and it is a heavily thematic deck. It is also quite a wacky deck. A powerful one, but a goofy one. The deck has an inefficient strategy to do explosive things and take you by surprise, having stupidly powerful cards that, when put together, do gimmicky things. Wincons are commander damage and Torment of Hailfire.

The commander is Progenitus, a 10-Mana behemoth of a creature in all colours of Magic, which fits Devin’s diverse, multi-faceted personality and multi-instrumentalist nature. Progenitus is also fitting as it references the Soul of the World, and Devin is the soul of this deck. Lastly, the many heads Progenitus has represent the many different genres of music present in Devin’s oeuvre.

The deck also revolves around balance, just like the universe. The Commander + Lands = 40 cards, other Creatures (10) + Instants (10) = 20 cards, Sorceries = 20 cards, Artifacts (9) + Enchantments (11) = 20 cards. This, together, makes up exactly 100 cards, with every single card being unique, lands included, making it a beautiful, colourful whole that paints a beautiful picture of the multi-faceted nature of Devin Townsend. There are also specifically 6 ultimatums in the deck, a metal number that can spell doom.

The deck comes in the ‘Dragon Shield Truth’ sleeves, as these cards hold the truth. A truth. The truth to getting to know Devin Townsend better while enjoying Magic: The Gathering.

Now for my next goal in life: having Devin sign Progenitus. Fingers crossed…
