**GUIDE TO RAFIQ OF THE SEAMES **

Rafiq of the Seames is an EDH/Commander deck in which you use Rafiq of the Many and enchant him with different auras and equipments to deal over 20 Commander damage to your opponents.

The Auras and Equipments

The main way you win in this deck is to enchant and equip Rafiq and swing in, so we want some powerful effects.

  • The Swords of X and Y

These swords are powerful because of their different abilities and also ways to protect Rafiq of certain colors. Also, because of Rafiq's double striking ability the swords will trigger twice during combat damage. Once for first strike and another for regular combat damage. For example hitting with a Sword of Fire and Ice unblocked will allow you to deal 4 damage to two targets and draw two cards. *Note that some of the swords give protection from certain enchantments in your decks that also buff Rafiq, resulting in a nonbo.

  • Shadowmoor cycle of "God" card enchantment auras

Specifically Shield of the Oversoul and Steel of the Godhead. These two enchantments offer huge benefits that lets your Rafiq swing in unblockable and lifelink for steel and indestructible and flying for shield. Another card that fits Rafiq's colors is Favor of the Overbeing but I have since taken it out as it did not provide as much benefit as the others.

  • Miscellaneous Auras and Equipments

Equipments such as Sword of the Animist allow you to buff Rafiq and ramp at the same time or Umezawa's Jitte to buff Rafiq and ward off pesky problem creatures and you get double the counters for double strike. The auras Angelic Destiny and Rancor buff him and give him ways to get through opponents defenses while coming back if he doesn't stick around. Eldrazi Conscription is the game winning and biggest spell in the deck which can be cheated out which we will discuss later.

Creatures

The Deck packs a healthy amount of creatures that will help make your game run smoothly and in your favor.

  • ** Mana Creatures**

The deck runs typical mana creatures to ramp out faster and get the engine going quicker. Things like Birds of Paradise and Avacyn's Pilgrim are essential. Others such as Coiling Oracle offer ramp and 'card draw' in a nice little package. Pretty self explanatory stuff.

  • Utilities Creatures

In this section you find information about creatures which are to help your game keep running smoothly. Cards like Reclamation Sage and Qasali Pridemage keep pesky artifacts and enchantments from slowing you down. Selfless Spirit and Spellskite are to protect your dudes and further pressure your opponent. Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite is for board wiping and buffing your guys. Phyrexian Metamorph can clone dudes and artifacts to help ramp or get some devastating power on board. Gilded Drake can enter the battlefield and steal the best dude on board and then you can kill it off and bring it back with Sun Titan or Eternal Witness and do it again. Many other creatures help your game plan by drawing cards or helping your game go smoothly.

  • Game Ending creatures

These creatures are ones you play when you are about to win or have a critical mass to deal a lot of damage in one swing. Sovereigns of Lost Alara allows Rafiq to swing and get an enchantment aura from your library and put it directly onto him, usually Conscription or an Unblockable aura such as Steel of the Godhead. Sublime Archangel will buff Rafiq quite a bit and with one or two auras he can easily kill. Its important to note multiple Exalted triggers DO in fact stack. Grand Abolisher can be saved for when you have a critical mass in hand or on board to prevent your opponents from stopping you.

Instants and Sorceries

  • Sorceries

I only run 7 Sorceries and 4 are the Wrath effects Wrath of God, Supreme Verdict, Cataclysm, and Austere Command while the other are Ponder, Nature's Lore, and Open the Armory for some consistency

  • Instants

Many of my Instant speed cards are counterspells that prevent my opponents from comboing or killing my dudes. Others such a Sphinx's Revelation and Dig Through Time and to generate some much needed card advantage looking for answers or counters to beat my opponent. Tutors such as Enlightened Tutor and Chord of Calling can find you the perfect card at the nick of time, whether you chord for a Selfless Spirit to give your dudes indestructible or Enlightened Tutor up a Finest Hour to kill two players at once.

Lands/ Miscellaneous

Because it is a three color Bant deck having the necessary lands is important to make sure you have all your colors. Fetches and Shocks/Duals are crucial. I also run Buddy and Fastlands which are very useful and quite cheap. Other lands such as Flagstones of Trokair can survive an Armageddon or be sacrificed to Lotus Vale to get a land from the library. Other lands are utility such as Cathedral of War which has exalted, Rogue's Passage which can give Unblockable and Alchemist's Refuge which allows me to flash in whatever need be. The rest of the deck is filled with the generic staples of the colors in Bant and helps give a foundation to the deck.

Updates

  1. Updated foils for the existing cards: Shield of the Oversoul, Trygon Predator, Steel of the Godhead and Stoneforge Mystic. Replaced Day of Judgment with Cataclysm as you can save Rafiq and each of your best artifacts and equipments while severely disrupting your opponents. Replaced Rogue's Passage with Brushland as Passage is far too slow and I have never activated it as I usually have flying or unblockable other ways. Replaced Jace, the Mind Sculptor with Austere Command as you can systemically kill all of your opponents best stuff while saving your best stuff given the situation.

  2. Updated foils for the existing cards Cyclonic Rift and Detention Sphere. Replaced Lightning Greaves with Gilded Drake because of the value of Gilded Drake being Chorded for and brought back with Sun Titan and also for the lack of Mind-Control type cards in the deck. I feel Greaves does very little as haste is not a huge factor and the shroud can definitely hurt you if Rafiq happens to be your only creature. Must play test more.
