Mairsil, AKA 3 color adjusted necrotic ooze

Mairsil

Author's Note: I am choosing not to explain every little detail of the deck so as to leave a few easter eggs for you to find.

So, I'm going to prefix this by saying, I'm horrible at writing primers. Therefore, if you see an error in the primer, want a question answered or want to suggest changes, then please comment below. If you like what you see, please feel free to upvote.

This is meant for competitive EDH. If your playgroup does not follow this meta, please don't use this. Competitive decks tend to be more fast or redundant than most people enjoy. That being said, that means this list is budgetless. I do not care about price so please, by all means suggest regardless of cost (assuming its legal). I do not care for foiling out everything as this is meant to be just a list. A deck should reflect you, so if you want your deck foiled out, go for it. This also helps you figure out the base cost (according to TCGplayer) to build this deck.

Now with that out of the way, lets begin.

Mairsil is a fairly straightforward combo deck that allows redundancy for your combos. He is one of the few commanders that is a combo, directly from the command zone. He is quite simply a second necrotic ooze. If you do not know why I do not include necrotic ooze for extra redundancy, there are two reasons. The first is that necrotic ooze has a stupidly high CMC for what I consider justification. Secondly, I will likely always have access to mairsil so I do not really need another outlet.

You may like this commander if:

  • You want to combo off

  • You want to use the graveyard as a secondary hand

You may not like this commander if:

  • You like swinging heavy and/or often

  • You want heavy control options

  • You want to play storm (look to Kess or Jaleva then)

  • You want linearity in your combo

  • You like playing goodstuff

  • You want a budget commander for cEDH (I get it. Look to yisan or selvala then)

There are two main ways to win in this deck: doomsday and Mirror mad phantasm. mirror mad phantasm causes mairsil to become a hermit druid deck. in which case, follow the win route of the old HD deck. I can't efficiently explain doomsday so heres a link to the primer.

Welp, to understand mairsil, lets break down his abilities then.

First off, his first ability lets his cage an artifact and/or creature. He does not care how long ago they were caged. Clementine will remember that

His next ability is a little more complicated. Here is how it works: take all activated abilities of everything still in cages. if you do know what an activated ability is, then please look at a rulebook. I do not nearly have enough space to explain activated abilities. The thing to remember about Mairsil is that he can activate the abilities of any and all caged permanents. The catch is HE CAN ONLY USE THE INDIVIDUAL CAGED ABILITY ONCE PER TURN UNTIL HE BECOMES A NEW OBJECT.

Now how do we read Mairsil's gained abilities? It breaks down into 2 cases:

Does Mairsil emain on the board?

The copied cost will change to include Mairsil's name instead. The ability will then use Mairsil's name on the ability.

For example, let us now read what happens if Mairsil cages Grim Monolith

He would get the single use ability of:

  • tap Mairsil: add to your mana pool

  • pay : Untap Mairsil

Otherwise:The copied cost will change to include Mairsil's name instead. The ability will then use the original card's name on the ability.

For example, let us now read what happens if Mairsil cages Mirror-Mad Phantasm

He would get the single use ability of:

In case people didn't know how this interaction works with cards like Necrotic Ooze, necrotic ooze works in the same exact way. Remember this and reread the win condition section to see if you understand it better.
