Llanowar Mentor Discussion

Klavs on Edric elfball

Some wincons:

Mana dork + Intruder Alarm + Kindred Discovery + Llanowar Mentor (+ Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre in the hand or library) = Infinite Llanowar Elves. If you have enough mana or another mana dork out, the same turn cast Craterhoof Behemoth to swing with infinite infinity/infinity hasty trample elves

If that combo falls apart (likely!), then Shaman of Forgotten Ways is a great way to finish out the game.

Or, you could just run over them with elves and Craterhoof the ol' fashioned way.

Llanowar Mentor isn't that spectacular actually, because most elf decks run 21~22 lands at the most, and are generally at 18~19. You don't draw too many lands, and mentor feeds off you topdecking horrible cards. I wouldn't add it as it is quite slow

LegendaryCreature-Podcast on Kyle's Rhys: Rhys-ies the Redeemed Revisited

This is a totally different take on Rhys from my first time around. I had been indiscriminate about the tokens I used in my original build. Here, I'm trying to make it more of an elf deck that is subordinated by tokens. I'm curious to see if Rhys' first activated ability can produce enough tokens to get threatening. It's definitely going to be a learning experience.

What does everyone running a Rhys elf ball deck think? Do you find you need more token production? I've got some other cards at the ready to include if needed, such as Dwynen's Elite, Hunting Triad, Llanowar Mentor, Lys Alana Huntmaster, Mercy Killing, Sylvan Offering. And because we've got a Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons deck in our group, I've got Flourishing Defenses ready too.

If you're running more elf token production, what are you cutting to get those token spells in?

Putrid Imp and Basking Rootwalla are both not modern legal. They have only been printed in Torment and non-Modern-legal supplemental sets. As a replacement 1-drop, I could see Llanowar Mentor or Greenseeker.

Also, if you're interesting in running a B/G delve deck, Tasigur, the Golden Fang already has established himself as a powerful contender in modern.

Polupus: I don't use Llanowar Mentor because it only starts getting better after I've played 3 lands, as that is all I need, and that means after turn 4. that is around the time you want to be winning the game, and mentor simply does not do that. As for adding a creature to ramp into, I could include a single copy of Craterhoof Behemoth.

demonicgrizzly: Shaman of the Pack has been a good card so far, should I bump it up to 4, or is 3 enough? (manabase will be done by end of year)

Tbh I'm not too familiar with the elf archetype but maybe Llanowar Mentor to get extra elves from your excess lands?

Most of the elf decks I've seen ramp into something hard to deal with so you always have things like eldrazi or Wurmcalling for the sideboard if you wanted.

first wave of cuts: Unbridled Growth does literally nothing in mono-green, Prophetic Prism same reason, Karametra's Favor don't need. also anything that is giving you energy you dont need it. unless you have some pay off for energy there is no point in running those

things to add (this is a long list so obviously just pick things up as you can. also not all of this will fit in but this is all good stuff):Arbor Elf, Allosaurus Rider, Birchlore Rangers, Bow of Nylea, Cultivate, Devoted Druid, Drove of Elves, Druid of the Cowl, Eladamri, Lord of Leaves, Elvish Archdruid, Elvish Champion, Elvish Harbinger, Elvish Mystic, Elvish Promenade, Elvish Vanguard, Everglove Courier, Explosive Vegetation, Ezuri, Renegade Leader, Fyndhorn Elder, Gaea's Herald, Gladehart Cavalry, Glissa Sunseeker, Greatbow Doyen, Green Sun's Zenith, Greenweaver Druid, Gyre Sage, Heritage Druid, Harmonize, Hunting Triad, Immaculate Magistrate, Imperious Perfect, Joraga Treespeaker, Joraga Warcaller, Llanowar Elves, Llanowar Mentor, Lys Alana Bowmaster, Lys Alana Huntmaster, Masked Admirers, Nissa, Vastwood Seer  Flip, Nissa's Pilgrimage, Norwood Priestess, Nullmage Shepherd, Nylea, God of the Hunt, Oran-Rief, the Vastwood, Priest of Titania, Realm Seekers, Reclamation Sage, Rishkar, Peema Renegade, Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary, Tajuru Preserver, Talara's Battalion, terrastodon, Thornweald Archer, Titania's Chosen, Viridian Shaman, Wellwisher, Wildslayer Elves, Winnower Patrol, Wirewood Elf, Wren's Run Packmaster, Yeva, Nature's Herald

(takes giant breath)

yeah.. its a lot of stuff. I got a little carried away.. also this is not a budgeted list of suggestions. you will need some of the $3-10 cards to make elves a serious threat.
