Llanowar Mentor Discussion

SynergyBuild on Spooky Ghosts (Budget tribal tournament)

Thanks for upvoting my deck xD but would you be opposed to spellshaper tribal, they are the coolest tribe! They turn your hand into one card!

Here are some of the Modern legal ones:

Llanowar Mentor (Llanowar Elves)

Jaya Ballard, TASK MASTER

Jolrael, Empress of Beasts (Use Anger of the Gods to blow up all of their lands!)

Sparkspitter (Spark Elemental)

Goldmeadow Lookout (Goldmeadow Harrier)

Icatian Crier (Raise the Alarm)

Dreamscape Artist (Harrow)

The best one though:

Mageta the Lion (Wrath of God)

Best non-legendary: Overtaker

Well, here we are again, it's been a week, it's been an absolutely insane week. Rivals of Ixalan is coming, and holy crap does it have a lot of great cards for Tribal Commander Decks. But alas, this is another one of my brain child decks.

so yeah, Spellshapers. Interesting buggers. Rarely printed, usually never used, incredibly in-expensive cards for the most part. Biggest issue is you have to discard stuff you'd otherwise want to keep.

But there are solutions. Card advantage is the biggest issue, but creatures like Damia, Sage of Stone and the almighty blue staple Rhystic Study provide ample card draw to fuel the constant discard, while Llanowar Mentor and Intruder alarm means you can always have your spellshapers up, ready to roll. Ravos enables you to recover your spellshapers if they die, while Thasios enables card draw and ramp. Overall, the deck I feel is pretty optimized for how gimmicky it is, though because of the deck's nature, i'm not sure if I have the right balance of mana sources to recursion.

Comment on Previous deck is on its way.

Great decklist. I played a non-budget Damia as my first EDH deck. She can be a house in a meta that is not prepared for her. I really like your take, as the spellshapers are a really nice addition. Many of the things in this list can be upgraded from a small increase in the cost, but the spellshapers are a really nice addition that should always stay budget.

From the deck overview video, seems like more ramp and more card draw from other sources may be a good idea. For spellshapers, I would suggest Llanowar Mentor and Krovikan Sorcerer. Both are able to progress your game early and could overcome those problems that we saw during the three games highlighted.

Anyway, +1 from my. Great job again.

Can we make it a 2/1 token named Jackal Pup? Like how Llanowar Mentor makes Llanowar Elves.

Some wincons:

Mana dork + Intruder Alarm + Kindred Discovery + Llanowar Mentor (+ Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre in the hand or library) = Infinite Llanowar Elves. If you have enough mana or another mana dork out, the same turn cast Craterhoof Behemoth to swing with infinite infinity/infinity hasty trample elves

If that combo falls apart (likely!), then Shaman of Forgotten Ways is a great way to finish out the game.

Or, you could just run over them with elves and Craterhoof the ol' fashioned way.

Llanowar Mentor isn't that spectacular actually, because most elf decks run 21~22 lands at the most, and are generally at 18~19. You don't draw too many lands, and mentor feeds off you topdecking horrible cards. I wouldn't add it as it is quite slow
