The Black Friday Aggro Shot
COOZCOOZCOOZ, 5 years ago
I had originally gotten the old Precon for this deck, and decided I wanted to make a Legendary subtheme and do legendary Vampire Matters. At the time, It seemed pretty well, as my play environment needed a "Weaker" deck. Edgar can get pretty ridiculous, so intentionally nerfing him a bit seemed like a way to even the odds.
But as the other tribal decks in my Playgroup have evolved, so too Must Vampires. Black Friday didnt give me a lot of Deals, but it did give me a big ol' Aggro boost.
Swamp, Profane Procession Flip, Worn Powerstone ------------------------------> Orzhov Signet, Rakdos Signet, Boros Signet:
I had to learn a harsh lesson with Signets, and while I think I can upgrade these in the Future, have a solid set of Ramp/Color Fixing will help. I especially think though that the Boros one can be upgraded/cut. "But why take a land, and the Stone?" Because while the powerstone is great, it comes in tapped on turn 3, where as on turn 2 I can play a signet. Procession likewise is also too slow: Assuming I can get 4 triggers, thats 20 mana to remove 4 creatures, and then 16 mana to play them again. Its just too damn slow, even if it flips over to a land. I can use this mana for better things. Swamp... yea, It can be a bit interchangeable, we shall see.
Queen's Commission , Call to the Feast -------------------------------> Pitiless Pontiff , Bloodghast:
Covering your weaknesses is basic. I have some shields, but ultimately boardwipes are still brutal to the deck. I had put in these two spells to help alleviate these: With all the lords I have in the deck, they commonly came out as 2/2's and all had lifelink and allowed me to quickly repopulate my board. Rather then that, I need Vampires that can reflexively come back on their own. Bloodghast does so on every landdrop, AND Pontiff can be an Indestructible blocker for shields. It's tough calls, but they gotta get made.
Return to Dust ---------------------------> Austere Command:
Honestly, the deck has a Pretty good amount of removal already, so I decided to Swap out this out, as I feel a Boardwipe is a little more flexible, and I will then have 3 Boardwipes in the deck.
Thirsting Bloodlord --------------------> Vampire Nocturnus:
Talk about your glow-ups. Now, Nocturnus has a draw back: He works only 40% of the time... but 40% of the time, He works, EVERYTIME. the Boost he gives is insanely dramatic and makes him a force to be reckoned with.
Yawgmoth's Vile Offering, Blood Tribute -----------------------------------> Shared Animosity, Radiant Destiny:
These were tough cuts, but I saw that as I kept playing, my vampires tended to top out a little: They get big, but then leave me wide open. With Radiant Destiny, I no longer have to worry about the crack-back of when I attack, and Shared Animosity makes even my smallest Vampires HUGE. Its an Aggro Tribal staple and Its been a long time coming.
Swamp --------------------> Castle Locthwain:
More Card Draw, which happens to be needed in this deck. It's not the best, but for what it does, it helps.
The Haunt of Hightower, Butcher of Malakir, Anowon, the Ruin Sage ----------> Cordial Vampire, Indulgent Aristocrat, Knight of the Ebon Legion:
These were tough to cut, man. Legends matter theme no longer applies: Most of the Fat has to go, as these creatures (while powerful) also cost way too much. With these changes the deck is more aggro and builds a bigger boardstate more quickly and consistently allowing me to chain my vampires or activate their effects.
Dark Impostor, Finale of Eternity ------------------------> Dusk Legion Zealot, Vampire of the Dire Moon:
This went along with more of my "fat trimming' mindset. The Imposter is good, but for 6 mana there are better exile/ removal spells and I can use the slot, and while Finale IS good, its just not strong enough to make it. Dire Moon is Vampire Nighthawk lite, and the Zealot allows some card draw. I'll be honest though, when I get Kalitas, that Zealot may be the first to go...
With the Year of Commander fast approaching, and knowing we are gonna get a new Baron Sengir, I am keeping SOME fat on the deck to allow for changes. but This shot in the arm has allowed Edgar to play MUCH better.

Elf Package added

After a year with a regular playgroup and a lot of testing I was finding the non 1 mana big scavenge targets and the fast mana artifacts were not pulling their weight. The card disadvantage on chrome mox and mox diamond was not worth it and I was almost never happy to get lotus petal. I ended up cutting those 3 artifacts, myr superion and phyrexian soulgorger to make room for a few more elves and triumph of the hordes. The goal is to have a backup over run plan with Ezuri renegade leader and triumph since the deck has really moved away from a fast infect kill and become more of a mid range deck.
Update 11: Throne of Eldraine
Romer, 5 years ago
Just adding a Castle Locthwain for some more card advantage.
Took out Blighted Fen since I have a lot of removal already and don't want to reduce my Swamp count because of things like Cabal Coffers , Cabal Stronghold and Dread Presence .

Specific Cuts and Swaps Wanted
princereggiek, 5 years ago
I have quite a few other cards not yet entered in sideboard, that I believe are strong options for this deck. I'm having trouble selecting cuts. I know I have far too many red mana sources. But I might add more red to the deck before making a final decision.
Fine tuning the Deck Strategy
COOZCOOZCOOZ, 5 years ago
So, These are some Quick changes that after playtesting, make the deck run a little better. The Deck does hurt for More Mana, and so....
Diabolic Revelation ---------------------------------> Orzhov Signet:
"Tutors are great, but worthless if you don't have Mana to play them you'e kinda shit outta luck, huh?" Yea, It's rough... I do like Tutors, but this WAS one of my Mana Sinks and I am more then capable of going without. With the Signet, I get some mana, and at the very least makes my Utility lands a little viable.
Dictate of Erebos ----------------------------------------> Righteous Cause:
An even Tougher cut, but this deck doesnt really have a ton of creatures on board at one time. It definitely has some power creatures, but It doesnt generate a massive board. With this swap, I get a one man Lifegain engine that my opponents/allies can assist in and Make karlov jump to huge amounts of counters. With more counters, comes more ammunition to exile threats, OR easier to just swing and kill.

Zulaport Cutthroat -> Linden Linden is a speculative include. Let's see how she plays. I like that Carl grows every time he swings. Zulaport is super medium. I kept him in because he's a 2-drop, but the deck has fewer than 20 creatures, and any actual removal will be pointed at my commander anyway.

Utility changes
Sanguinolency, 5 years ago
I removed Crop Rotation from the deck to add Biomancer's Familiar; it was lacking a real need other than grabbing Cavern of Souls or Ancient Tomb which are both colorless lands. Biomancer's Familiar adds redundancy to the deck as another Training Grounds to help pump out more value consistently. I also cut the only Talisman that was in the deck (Creativity) for Smothering Tithe as it is a better value source for a longer game with a harder grind which I feel is what the deck currently needed as it has a lot of fast mana and ramp.

Out: Burnished Hart (I just don't seem to like this card like most players), Boros Charm

-_-
sickfreed, 5 years ago
I picked up an Elvish Spirit Guide today, and was going to take out Unravel the Aether but Funeral Charm just isn't as good as i want it to be. Everything i'm really worried about can be gotten rid of with Duress if I really need to, and usually before i resolve Frog or and outlet. Unravel is just really good, and looks so good in foil. ^^
Anyways, ESG is great and I love her x sickfreed

Updated lands and removal
NJSilverbird, 5 years ago
After playtesting again and learning I could sacrifice Shriekmaw with Yawgmoth, Thran Physician when evoked and its evoke sacrifice trigger is still on the stack, giving it extra value, I decided to switch out Carrier Thrall for Shriekmaw, to put in more removal while not losing too much sacrifice fodder.
I also switched some utility lands. Barren Moor is strictly better than Polluted Mire I believe. Bojuka Bog took the place of Leechridden Swamp for an extra defense against a Muldrotha Deck in my meta. Because I now have Cabal Coffers and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth together and because I felt the mana base could be improved, I switched out Thespian Stage for Myriad Landscape.

Reverted previous change. Questing Beast just wasn't doing enough work to justify it.

Swapping out Boreas Charger and Day of Judgment for Knight of the White Orchid and Vandalblast
Doing this swap since Vandalblast has more potential in the early game and I already have a few creature board wipes. Boreas Charger has just started to seem too slow and I have other cards in the deck that can get me plains.
