Tweaks due to play patterns

evkede, 2 years ago

Healer's Hawk, Inscription of Abundance, Forest and Temple of Plenty in for Intrepid Adversary, Chrome Courier, Baneslayer Angel, and Felidar Sovereign. The list wants to cast lots of cheap spells, gain life, and repeat. The importance of hitting every land drop is very high, and 5+ drops are not as appealing as they might be, given the play patterns of the list.

19MAY2023: Spike Feeder, Cleric Class and Staff of Domination in for Shabraz, the Skyshark  Flip, Regna, the Redeemer and Primal Command. Staff can go infinite with Accomplished Alchemist, which is hilarious given the deck's restriction. Spike Feeder can give me lifegain to draw cards sometimes, or trigger lifegain when needed off turn. It also synergizes with Lathiel, the Bounteous Dawn to get more and more lifegain and counters. Cleric Class I've tried before in the list, but didn't have much synergy at the time. It can gain infinite life with spike feeder, and otherwise power up my creatures, which might well be reasonable. It's also the only way the deck has currently to get a dead creature back.

26MAY2023: Glorious Sunrise and Camaraderie in for Scavenging Ooze and Priest of Ancient Lore.

28MAY2023: Branchloft Pathway  Flip in for a plains.

Consistency

Rennymoses, 2 years ago

Hey guys, so while the deck was performing okay, i needed it to be better and more consistent. to achieve that i have removed 4 mana bolas, architect jace, 5 mana jace, tezzeret, and ob nixilis. instead i have added the 2nd big ashiok, 4th opt, and 3 settle the wreckage. while many are saying to play board wipes instead, not only does settle destroy grave recurring creatures, but it also allows me to keep my mana open and assess the situation instead of tapping out in my turn and leaving the door open for the opp to play whatever they would like. in terms of side, there is a minor change as well, being the 2nd kalitas and kozilek have swapped places, as well as 1 baby ashiok and oath of kay dropped, adding veto as the replacement. will test at the next tournament and share results of the deck performance after the next few games. so far on this site and xmage, the draw is much more consistent and the "same" every time having less janky fun one of cards. as always, would love to hear thoughts and feedback! thanks for taking the time to check out the deck!

Haruspex->Kami of Whispered Hopes: Wotc stop releasing basically strictly better cards >:( I want to keep the 'nids but they really aren't that good in a lot of cases, it sucks that it has to be that way.

Pristine Talisman->Reckless Handling. Should be pretty self explanatory. Ramp was never really an issue in this deck

Actual deck has been built

kpres, 2 years ago

I built the deck in paper format, and removed several combos to make way for necessary tutors and mana rocks. There's only one infinite mana combo now, which is Vizier of Remedies and Devoted Druid. With so many creatures that combo with my commander, I've added tutors instead of regular card draw. This deck needed a concentration of cards that grant lifelink, and I have that in the form of two equipments. I'm considering Quest for the Holy Relic as a turn 1 play that can attach Shadowspear or Basilisk Collar to Shalai and Hallar by the time I need it. Another combo I removed was Vigor with Chain Reaction or Blasphemous Act. While powerful, the combo is slower and I intend to have this deck go off before being able to cast those two cards.

When deckbuilding, I aim for 32 lands, plus 2 for each additional color (36), 10 removal cards, 10 ramp or rocks, 10 tutors or card draw, 10 early creatures, 5 cards for synergy, and 20 cards for strategy.

I've been testing around with some different enchantments and I've decided that Its awesome when I have solemnity and Lost Auramancers on the battlefield, but then no one swings at me and it never dies. I'm adding Lampad of Death's Vigil (yeah there's better tutorable sack outlets, but we've already got a strong Theros vibe going here so it's partially for flavor.) as a tutorable sac outlet for lost auramancers, and Animate Dead to bring him back for a round 2 and or spicy targets in opponents graveyards. I've also made some other minor adjustments to cards, removed an equipment or two as they are dead cards in my hand if I'm doing well and have shroud on my creatures. Also some card draw spells have swapped around and little spells have changed around. Honestly most are for the worst, but I'm a sucker for pretty cards and Telling Time doesn't fit the vibe so its been replaced with Strategic Planning and other things like that. Added Void Rend for some more good removal.

Dropping Invoke Despair

Apollo_Paladin, 2 years ago

It's hard to drop a card as useful and with as much game value as Invoke Despair, but about half of the games where I see this (up to about 35 test games so far) I'm unable to cast it due to the 4 black cost. Even a 3-black cost isn't that difficult to manage, but it seems that 4th black mana hitting reliably just isn't with it.

I've been wanting to try Sheoldred  Flip for a while now, so this seems like a solid 5-drop replacement. There's still good game value here I feel, even if it does come at the cost of sitting on the battlefield making it vulnerable to removal (unlike Invoke Despair which just resolves unless it's countered).

I'm going to play around with working Kaya's Ghostform in as well, as I like keeping with the Kaya theme as much as I can, and its usefulness in preventing the 1 or 2 sacrifice a planeswalker effects from taking out my commander seems too nice not to work in. Plus, it opens up the option of triggering Kaya multiple times in one turn if I can manage to -3 her to death myself. Not quite sure what I'll drop to add it in, but adding it to this update since I'm definitely making the swap as soon as I get a better feel for the reliability of the deck.

Suspect cards

noahlittle, 2 years ago

The two creatures that have landfall deal 1 damage are into side board for other cards that can help progress board states faster. The biggest issue I'm encountering is late game flooding on lands so trying to add more impactful land fall triggers and some bombs that immediately affect the board on arrival. also experienced a game with a lot of protection form color effects so trying to diversify some of the creatures to help prevents someone saying pro green and my deck just not being able to do much about it.

2023 Update:

L3g3nd1603, 2 years ago

Hey all, now that the Praetor story line has come mostly to a close, i figured it was now a time as ever to update the deck again. the last update still applies, but now the deck has been updated to show the CURRENT state of the deck. this change mostly helps me for online play, but also shows yinz how and what it's become. i did take it to a local CMDR pods tourney and the deck came in the top 5 so im very proud of this puppy. finishing top 5 should show you just how powerful even a slow start can swing into an advantage for you. That's all from me, See yinz on the fire floor leg3nds -Leg3nd1603

More Golems <font color="green"><strong>FIXED</str

Gympztah, 2 years ago

The deck is getting there, but I found that I rarely have more than one golem in play. This needs to be fixed. More golems, and more ways to trigger it. Also, Glissa Sunseeker might be a bit too good. Especially if she can be recurred. It can really ruin artifact decks, and I want this to be a casual deck. It will have plenty of artifact removal as it is. I think this would be an improvement. There are more golems now at least.
