Let's be honest - vampires are probably not Slayer fans, are they? They do, however, make for a great Commander deck. As a tribe they've got everything going for them: good lords; neat promo cards; powerful themed finishers like Blood Tribute and an ace planeswalker in the many faces of Sorin. Plus amazing artwork from some of Magic's most iconic sets!

With the release of the 2017 Commander decks I finally had a choice of Mardu legends to lead my tribe and while Edgar Markov was undoubtedly the best, I already had a casual Orzhov deck full of predominantly female vampires and life matters cards so went with Licia, Sanguine Tribune instead. As such I've skewed more towards choosing creatures that do things when I gain life or make them better in combat rather than an aristocrats style deck with Butcher of Malakir/Blood Artist and token flood. Next came thematic removal spells like Go for the Throat and some antique artifact bling. Lands are about what you'd expect, and although I know they're not that good I have also included the Innistrad cycle of utility lands because they're cool and very occasionally relevant! Licia herself is really underrated in my opinion, especially in a deck specialising in gaining life, where she often ends up costing just three to cast even with commander tax and soon grows into a huge beater. The best thing about this deck is just how easy it is to play: all the creatures are so synergistic that they support each other in pretty much any combination, and it's fairly common to end up with a mix of effects on the field that incidentally drain your opponents out of the game with almost no effort.

Well I said wasn't going to run Edgar Markov right up until that judge foil was released but he's just too pretty to resist, fucking sue me for liking sexy men who live forever and have long flowing hair. I also think he's a card that's fine in the 99 where he can be permanently removed and the eminence ability doesn't immediately dominate the board from turn one. With the release of some really good vampires in Crimson Vow I'm now struggling to make cuts in the deck and have sadly had to drop personal favourites such as Indulging Patrician as well as completely phasing out the Madness sub-theme it used to have (though that does mean I can now build Anje or Olivia as a whole new deck so no regrets there). The Dracula cards are cool and all so I'll certainly try to collect them but don't really - in my opinion - fit aesthetically with the rest of the deck so I have chosen not to add any. Similarly I adore the art for Anime Sorin but I'll be going borderless in here so he doesn't look weirdly out of place or distract me with that open manblouse.
