Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet Discussion

Arcaneful on Is there a Place in ...

Hello!

So I recently acquired a copy of Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet from my LGS. I thought the art looked very cool, and I never got a chance to play with the original zendikar block so I thought maybe I should try him out in EDH. Problem is, I have no idea where to use him. I'd like to lean away from Vampire Tribal so Edgar is out, and I can't decide if I should use him as a commander. I'm in a tier 2.5-3 meta and even though we're casual, he seems pretty slow. Anyone have any experience with him as the commander? Anyone have him in a deck at all?

Not a big fan of Torment of Hailfire, in a 60 card deck with small life totals.. it's a sketchy card, but in commander it's far to easy to "opt out" with it. Besides the cost is a bit too expensive for what it does.

I would look into replacing Licia, sanguine Tribune with Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet. Kalitas is a bit cheaper, doesn't require 3 colors and the effect is honestly more devastating.

This probably goes without saying, but the faster you get rid of those tap lands, the faster the deck improves.

The biggest issue I see here is the overall CMC of most of the creatures. It's fairly high and while many are good, Edgar works at his best when he has an army to work with. With 37 lands and the bulk of the creatures on the higher end of the curve, you will often find yourself struggling to get anything out. If anything I would look to reduce the number of 4+ CMC's to what is most in line with your objective for the deck.

Some of the spells are less efficient than they could be, but that's always something to work on. Cards like Phyrexian Arena, Necropotence, and Ad Nauseam can provide a significant boost to your hand, as would cards like Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor.

Lastly the interaction could be improved, Anguished Unmaking, Utter End, Vindicate, and Path to Exile are staples in these colors that honestly should never be left out. Forced sacrifice is good, but outright removal is better and 3 of those 4 are very universal in application.

The deck is as you say it is, stock with improvements.. which isn't terrible and certainly serviceable. For now I would just work at improving the staple things (interaction, draw, and land) until you get a really good feeling for exactly what you want the deck to, then begin tinkering. When you figure that out and you still want help, update your description. It helps people to give you more precise advice.

FiendishElf, I really love Cabal Coffers as a card, and run it in all my mono black decks for obvious reasons. However, once you introduce a second or third color into a deck, the amount of basic swamps in your deck drops from 20ish to 1-5. Unless you have a consistent way to get Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and the coffers at once, the chances of you actually getting value from it is slim to none. If you like mono black vamp generals, such as Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet, Anowon, the Ruin Sage, or either Drana, then I would heavily recommend it. Some casual, budget lists of Olivia Voldaren that have a lot of basic swamps can run it, but for the most part I would advise against it. Just run Urborg so you can get all the black mana you need, or even a Chromatic Lantern

Arcanis the Omnipotent - Draw plus protection

Dark Impostor - why settle for only our own creatures abilities

Eater of the Dead - "free" untap + graveyard hate

Fatestitcher - tap down / untap

Geth, Lord of the Vault - reanimation

Hoard-Smelter Dragon - artifact destruction

Jace's Archivist - windfall

Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet - creature destruction + token

Kamahl, Pit Fighter, Lightning Crafter - tap for lightning bolt

Mean suggestions that will make you lose friends

Beguiler of Wills, Infernal Denizen - Steal all opponents creatures

Cao Cao, Lord of Wei, Sadistic Hypnotist - Discard

Demonic Hordes, Dwarven Driller, Helldozer - land destruction

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Krenko, Mob Boss - create infinite tokens

Pili-Pala, Gilded Lotus, Khalni Gem, Pyramid of the Pantheon - infinate mana with one CMC untap method

Looks good. Some suggestions for cuts: Warmth is kind of weak and can be replaced with Elenda, the Dusk Rose (when you get her), Dega Sanctuary can be replaced with Vampire Nocturnus, Arguel's Blood Fast can be replaced with Greed or even Erebos, God of the Dead. Or take the Necropotence from Rakdos and put it in here, it's better here anyways. You could replace In Garruk's Wake with Dusk, it does double duty here, giving you back a bunch of your creatures when you flash it back. If you don't like Dusk, then Kindred Dominance would work in the overcosted wipe slot too.

As for creatures, Annoited Deacon should probably come out, as well as Exulted Skymarcher, Paladin of the Bloodstained, Sadistic Skymarcher and Skymarcher Aspirant. Options to go in include Stromkirk Condemned, Bishop of Binding, Bloodline Keeper  Flip, Dusk Legion Zealot, Twilight Prophet, Indulgent Aristocrat, Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet, Mephidross Vampire, Necropolis Regent, Patron of the Vein, Shauku, Endbringer (less important than maybe other creatures), Soul Collector for giggles, Thief of Blood, Viscera Seer, Vampire Hexmage or Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter.

Other options for the deck include Zealous Persecution or Stensia Masquerade.

Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter seems like he would synergize well with Elenda.

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet and Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet both seem like they would work well too (although Traitor might still be on the expensive side of things, I haven't checked recently).

If you really want this to be competitive in Modern, there's going to be quite a few changes, I think.

Firstly, the removal. Fatal Push is the best removal in Modern currently. You should play 4 before things like Hero's Downfall (seems like a sideboard card at best) and Go for the Throat (Affinity is a popular deck).

Secondly, the discard spells. 4 is probably not enough, and you should play some number of Inquisition of Kozilek - people usually play this in greater number than Thoughtseize.

Thirdly, the creatures. Guul Draz Assassin is just not that good. It takes a giant amount of resources to utilize his abilities; and if you just need someone to trigger Mavren Fein's ability, maybe consider Bloodghast. 3 Gifted Aetherborn is perfectly fine; 3 Bloodline Keeper  Flip might be a bit greedy and 3 Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet is never going to work (a 7-drop with 20 lands and no ramp!).

Fourthly, the planeswalkers. Sorin, Solemn Visitor is perfect for the deck but Sorin, Grim Nemesis is a tougher call because of its CMC and the number of lands you play. Maybe consider Sorin, Lord of Innistrad or more copies of Solemn Visitor?

Lastly, the lands. It's probably a budget reason why there aren't Marsh Flats and Godless Shrine in the deck, but there are ways to work around that. More importantly, 20 lands seems too few for what is essentially a mid-to-late game deck. Even typical BW Tokens, which has a much lower curve than this deck, runs 23-24 lands.

My personal opinions.
