Need help! Lots of good combos in here, and it can win in a competitive setting, but has a hard time vs stax and is also a turn or two slower than the top tier competitive decks.

Why Omnath?

Omnath may not at first seem to be very integral to the deck. This is correct. None of the combos require him to win, and at most he just generates temporary value. There are three reasons I have him in the deck.

1. I HATE all of the common commanders. This could have been a golos deck or a thrasios/partner deck but FRICK golos FRICK thrasios. Omnath wins out of spite.

2. His second land trigger ability is actually really nice for pulling off early wins. With ramp, you can play him turn three and have nine mana on turn four to win with Reshape the Earth. If you don’t win turn four, he generates every turn.

3. If you go infinite with emiel and bloom tender (to be explained later for those not already familiar), if you have no other way to win you can blink Omnath a bunch to draw your deck with his etb.

Sections

This is just a brief explanation of why I’ve categorized the cards as they are

Value

This is reserved for engines/gooodstuff that get you closer to inevitability but play no direct role in winning. Important in this section is land recurrence, extra landfall for Omnath, and draw engines.

Stax

Some of these cards might not seem like stax pieces (dromoka I’m lookin at you), but this section more generally refers to anything that interacts with the oppponent(s). If the opponents strategy happens to be countering whatever we play, well then dromoka begins to make sense. Part to exile is noteable here; don’t underestimate pathing your own creature to net three mana from omnaths passive.

Ramp

It is very important that Omnath is played turn three and not turn four. Although the cards in thus section are useful in triggering omnaths landfall ability, they’re main purpose is to ensure ramp before turn three, since we can usually rely on fetchlands to double trigger Omnath later.

Setup

These are all the cards necessary to assemble the wincons. Especially noteable here are a. Vivien, since when we play Emiel we automatically get bloom tender off vivien’s -2, and b. Bring to light, which cab get a lot of the wincons straight to the field.

Wincons

This section is pretty self explanatory. All of these cards in combination with at least one other in this section will win you the game.

Synergies Show

Risen Reef

This is your go to value card. You can easily t2 Green Sun's Zenith for Flamekin Harbinger to find it. This combos well with half of the wincon cards, so it’s a good way to stay ahead of your opponents while assembling the pieces.

Risen Reef + Zendikar's Roil/Omnath, Locus of Rage means you flip your library until you hit a nonland card every time you play a land. If you hit a fetchland along the way, you get to repeat the process.

Emiel, the Blessed

This is a wincon, but it is also a great early value engine.

Emiel the Blessed + Omnath, Locus of Creation let’s you draw and also reset Omnath’s ability. With extra fetchland plays you can loop this a couple times per turn, for example with Ramunap Excavator and Dryad of the Ilysian Grove to replay fetches twice.

Emiel the Blessed + Gilded Drake lets you take as many creatures as you have the mana for. This works by allowing the gilded drake trigger to be placed on the stack and then blinking it.

Emiel the Blessed + Eternal Witness/Risen Reef/Yasharn, Implacable Earth are all pretty self explanatory.

Drake/Copy Creatures

This deck actually does really well using your opponent’s engines. I’ve learned playing against sisay and yisan that when I copy their commander I can go off faster than them. Using Phantasmal Image/Phyrexian Metamorph to copy risen reef is also a really good way to get a lot of value.

Vesuva

I added this section as an afterthought, but the more I think about it the more I like Vesuva. It was originally only in there to double valakut, but it has some other synergies. With ashaya on the field, it enters copying any creature you control. You can double Gaea's Cradle, although only for a turn since it’s legendary and you have to sac one of them. And now I’ve got myself seriously considering Dark Depths. Hmmmmmm

Setup

Not Losing

The first task in winning is not losing. Here, Bring to Light is your best bet. If you can play mystical tutor on T1 or T2 without disrupting T3 Omnath, always find Bring to Light as a preemptive measure. Bring to Light gets: Linvala, Keeper of Silence, Damnation, Collector Ouphe, and Gilded Drake are your best responses. Linvala shuts down most decks, and also becomes a wincon later on.

In general, you should use the other tutors to the battlefield (as opposed to cards like Worldly Tutor) to assemble stax rather than the combo. Chord of Calling to find Collector Ouphe in response to a chain veil teferi deck is much more devastating than playing ouphe at sorcery speed the turn before.

Gamble is a last resort here. Only play it either if you have Eternal Witness/Noxious Revival in hand or if you are going to lose the very next turn.

Assembling Combos

Intuition is good, but not as good as it seems. The pile will always be Eternal Witness + Noxious Revival + the card you want. I've found most people will give you noxious revival, meaning intuition is the same as the enlightened/worldly/mystical tutor except it costs more to play. Always default to the one cost tutors.

Green Sun's Zenith is real good here since it finds Flamekin Harbinger, which then in turn can find three of the combo pieces. Note that it goes to the top of your library. This may seem like a setback, but with Maelstrom Wanderer it means you can cast it for free.

Vivien, Monsters' Advocate is the best one here in terms of winning immediately. It lets you assemble two combo pieces at once, which is always nice.

Last thing to note is that cascade Maelstrom Wanderer is a trigger that can be responded to. It should be responded to with Mystical Tutor/Worldly Tutor/Enlightened Tutor, since cascade doesn't shuffle your deck. Casting maelstrom wanderer with tutors in hand and mana to cast them is usually a win, since with each trigger you can set up a combo piece to be cast.

Wargate is an excellent finisher. There's a lot of creature tutors, but this is really the only universal one. It can get mass hysteria to make your win immediate, vivien to auto-win the next turn, or really the last piece of any of the combos.

Combos/Wincons

Ashaya

Ashaya, Soul of the Wilds is the easiest way to win in this deck. It infinite-combos with four other cards and instant-wins with a couple more. Here's the go-to:

Ashaya, Soul of the Wilds + Zendikar's Roil. Whenever a land enters (and ashaya enters as a land) you make a 2/2. That 2/2 is a land, so you make another 2/2. Add Mass Hysteria/Maelstrom Wanderer and you can attack for infinite. If you cant attack for infinite, you have infinite mana. Add Risen Reef instead and you draw your deck. Omnath, Locus of Rage can sub in for Zendikar's Roil as necessary.

You can use the normal tutors to assemble each piece seperately, or you can be really cool. You can be cool in three ways:

1: Find Zendikar's Roil first and play it. Then, Flamekin Harbinger your Ashaya, Soul of the Wilds to the top and cast Maelstrom Wanderer into ashaya for free.

2: Find Vivien, Monsters' Advocate and Omnath, Locus of Rage. Play vivien first. Use her -2. When you play omnath, you can then search for ashaya and play her immediately. You won't win this turn without haste or Risen Reef though.

3: Find Vivien, Monsters' Advocate, Zendikar's Roil, and ashaya. Play viven and roil first. Use her -2. When you play ashaya, you can immediately find Risen Reef so that the combo makes you win immediately.

Alternatively with ashaya: if you cast Scapeshift you can sacrifice all of your creatures and win with the valakut combo mentioned later.

Linvala

Linvala, Keeper of Silence is a stax piece you want to get out early, and normally she dies quickly. But whaddya know, this game your opponents are bad at the game and she survives. What do do? Find Living Plane. Simple and easy. Now their lands are useless.

Emiel

Currently I am considering adding in Peregrine Drake so that haste isn't necessary in this combo. However, haste is necessary in a couple other combos, so in each game I will probably be trying to get a haste card into play anyways. The current combo is this:

Emiel the Blessed + Bloom Tender + omnath so bloom tender taps for four + something to give bloom tender haste makes infinite mana by blinking and retapping bloom tender. With the infinite mana, you can draw your deck by blinking omnath. If that's not enough to win I don't know what's wrong with you.

Keep in mind that with vivien's -2 you can find emiel and bloom tender at the same time.

Valakut/Vesuva

This is actually your fastest win (T4) but that is a rare occurrence, and this usually ends up happening around T6-7. It is also only useful in 1v1 or for taking out a single opponent.

Heres the fast version:

T1 play a land. T2 play a land and a ramp spell (Explore, etc). T3 play omnath and a land. T4 play and crack a fetchland. You have WUBR floating from omnath + five lands. Play another ramp spell (dealing four damage from omnath), then play Dryad of the Ilysian Grove with omnath's mana. Use your lands, which are now all forests, you cast Scapeshift. Find Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle, Vesuva, and any four lands. All of them enter as mountains thanks to dryad. Deal 36 damage, which is coincidentally enough since you did four with omnath earlier.

Here's the other fast version:

T1-3 are the same as previous. T4 you play and crack a fetch again. You have five lands + WUBR floating from omnath. Nine mana makes a Reshape the Earth, find valakut/vesuva + eight mountains dealing 48 damage.

If you are going for Scapeshift and not Reshape the Earth, you have to wait until you have eight lands (valakut/vesuva + six mountains) to deal 36 damage + 4 from omnath. This usually happens around T6.

Last thing to note is be aware of the amount of mountains in the deck (11), and try to keep them there.

Risen Reef

This is your backup backup combo. If all else fails, it is quite reliable. It is a non-infinite stand in for the original ashaya combo.

As explained previously, Risen Reef + Zendikar's Roil or any of the stand-ins for roil lets you flip the top card until you hit a nonland, and every time you hit a fetchland you get to repeat the process. Adding in a Phantasmal Image/Phyrexian Metamorph almost ensures a win, since near half of the deck is lands and the double activation from fetchlands makes up for the difference. This is a non-inevitable way to draw most of your deck and gain a ton of mana, at which point you can usually win.
