Ensnare Discussion

lucasenra on Ral Zarek

(saw your post on tumblr and had to come and suggest stuff, but feel free to ignore, I'm just trying to throw some ideas out to help out!)

I think counterspells aren't very good as signature spells (but I don't have much experience with Oathbreaker). If you're going for flavor I think Expansion / Explosion , Izzet Charm or Turn//Burn could work. (It could also be fun to build a Harnessed Lightning energy-themed deck for Ral, Storm Conduit :x)

I think that instead of running a lot of creatures with tap (or untap) abilities it would be easier to focus on artifacts for the ramp/card draw/etc with cards like Clock of Omens , Key to the City , Staff of Nin (), Unwinding Clock , Chaos Wand , Oracle's Vault () and a bunch of mana rocks ( Mind Stone , Pyramid of the Pantheon (), Coalition Relic (), Talisman of Creativity , Star Compass , Hedron Archive , Basalt Monolith and Khalni Gem ). Animation Module can add counters to planeswalkers, so that could be fun too.

Invert / Invent and Firemind's Foresight are pretty good budget tutors. Fabricate and the Trophy Mage / Tribute Mage s could be good too.

Ensnare can be a lifesaver in certain situations. Blustersquall is something I thought I would already see in your list.

Temporal Distortion makes things take 1 extra turn to untap. Frozen AEther , Winter Orb and Mist of Stagnation are other relevant Stax pieces if you want to go that way.

Reality Shift is probably the best creature single target removal in blue.

I'd cut down on the number of X damage spells you're running and rely more on having some graveyard recursion/tutoring to make it more consistent. Mystic Retrieval would be my choice to run along with Archeomancer. Mizzix's Mastery is also pretty good, but probably better if you're focusing on spellslinging.

Vandalblast and Shenanigans (or maybe Release the Gremlins for the cuteness) are good artifact removal. Geistblast is a interesting Flashback spell that actually should be like Amonkhet's Aftermath. Insidious Will 's versatility shouldn't be underestimated.

(aaand I already suggested too much. Like I said, feel free to ignore. Can't wait to see the finished deck. I hope something from this mess helps!)

Scroll down the page a little. In the sidebar on the right, towards the bottom, TappedOut will tell you whether your deck is format-legal and even tell you which cards are illegal. Currently it's saying Ensnare, Sylvan Safekeeper and Undiscovered Paradise, and also that your maindeck is 61 cards.

I don't think Ensnare is modern legal, or Bubble Matrix, or Ponder. If playing casual, no big deal, but I saw this was listed as a Modern deck.

For getting through damage with your Quietus Spike, how about Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive? On that theme, you could also use some creatures that let you draw when you damage a player.

I just got around to ordering this list last week, though I'm still waiting on Alexi, Zephyr Mage, Breaching Leviathan, Dragon Wings, Ensnare, Millikin, Scourge of Fleets and Sky Diamond.

Instead, for bodies I've decided to use alot of draw in the form of Arcanis the Omnipotent, Azami, Lady of Scrolls, Kefnet the Mindful and to make up for the major loss in disruption (somewhat) Tidespout Tyrant. Commander's Sphere is slightly slower but makes a fine rock that comes in untapped and Gridlock and Aqueous Form to keep a consistent Instant and Enchantment count while still getting the job done. After a few test hands it seems to work out, so I'm looking forward to subbing them in when necessary even after i get the correct cards.

Sorry for the long comment, as it was mostly for me. I'm pretty new around here, but I think the draw creatures at least could be useful and potentially make room for other switches.

Thanks for the vote! I've considered Trade Routes before and I've only ever played Ensnare for bouncing my lands so far, so I'm probably going to make that switch in the near future.

Since you're going for unblockability, I would suggest the classic Bident of Thassa, Open Into Wonder, Rogue's Gloves, Ongoing Investigation, and of course, Coastal Piracy.

Tapping your opponents creatures is a great way to ensure you can steal stuff. Cryptic Command, Deluge, Ensnare, and Sleep will help you go wide easily.

Hey man here is a deck Ive been playing since 2006 or so. Its been updated since but maybe you can get some ideas. Urborg land is a fantastic idea, I just sold mine too haha.

I recommend Stab Wound over Errant Minion as it prevents damage against you and racks up the damage to boot. Siren's Call is one of my favorites with Propaganda out there. I used to use it with Ensnare which is dirtier, but hey this deck is pretty damn dirty as is ;p. Also with no creatures you can always Reins of Power FTW, which is quite hilarios
