Fungus, Among'us - Dredge is a 100% fair mechanic!

Commander / EDH Aristocrats BG (Golgari) Bracket 4 Dredge Lands

Reason for the deck: Big Myke seems to be a great commander for for a build around Dredge, and has been my favourite colour combination for a long time. It scratches the Timmy itch with big creatures, but also lets me play around with graveyard shenanigans etc. I also played Dredge in modern, and was the most fun deck to play.

Further to that, Dredge has never really seemed viable in EDH. Not enough cards to make it a solid strategy, and I wanted to see IF I could make it work. So with that being said, lets dive into it.

The Deck-Tech: So, Big Myke has "Descend" which means it wants permanents going to my graveyard from anywhere on my turn. So whilst using the staple real dredge cards (Golgari Grave-Troll, Stinkweed Imp and the sort), have also got to look for some more "faux-dredge" cards as well, to help get stuff in the bin regularly on my turn, and make it count towards my pay-offs. Cards like Overlord of the Balemurk, Ripples of Undeath, Hermit Druid and my personal favourite, Mesmeric Orb. These can get repeatedly good quantities of cards into the bin. I also have some good cards where I can pitch stuff into my graveyard for either a tutor, or get something back out of my graveyard using Survival of the Fittest and Tortured Existence. This can help when I need to get a dredger into the bin, or a key piece can be retuned to my hand. Speaking of The Landman, seems like a good place to discuss the mana base of the deck. There are 0 basic lands in the deck, which means I can play a ton of good utility lands etc. Also means there are some tap lands, but the effect is worth it. This also means that should Hermit Druid get activated, it will mill my entire library into the Graveyard. Now the deck has a total of 3 non permanent cards in it, so the Descend-Count can be pretty big with this. But... if I then needed to draw a card, I would kinda die. I have a couple reshuffle effects in the deck in Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre, and Endurance should hopefully mean I have a way of preventing that happening.

So what about the pay-offs... With all this interaction between Graveyard and Library etc, obviously need to consider the pay-offs. Firstly there is the obvious pay-off with the commander. When the descend count is even as small as 3-5, it will make me 3-5 1/1 Fungus (which cant block). And the number of these little guys cant get real big, real fast. This in turn makes Big Myke... bigger and bigger. Now whilst you can attack with these 1/1's (and sometimes we do), they are also perfect resources to use in various ways:

  1. 1st thing was to make the most out of these little mushrooms with mana production. Cryptolith Rite, Insidious Roots and Enduring Vitality and kind of do the same thing in letting me these guys for mana. Also have the Alters in here as well for the same reason (Ashnod's alters|Ashnod and Phyrexian alter|Phyrexian).
  2. Due to the large number of bodies this deck can make, anything which needs me to sacrifice creatures is fueled for this. Its great when you attack with a flipped Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel   and helps when activating The Doctor. Also gives me food for Viscera Seer, Umbral Collar Zealot and any other sacrifice outlets.
  3. Chatterfang, Squirrel General lets me make an even bigger boards, as I then get mushrooms, and squirrels. This then feeds into the removal effect as well. Good stuff.
  4. Skullclamp is also bonkers in this deck as have soooo much fodder to feed to the The Clamps. Which in turn... means I can draw... or better I can dredge more!!!

A curious evolution of the deck... When I made this deck to begin with, I realized that whilst I wanted to get lots of cards into my Graveyard, it can leave me with issues playing lands. So I included some land/graveyard stuff, and stumbled across cards like Hedge Shredder and Cocaine Bear. So over the evolution of this deck, I have now also pushed into the space of "lands-matters" as a bit of a side theme. Have a few ways to get all my lands back from the Grave, and have Field of the Dead as a must have land really, as again makes me tokens, which are more food. And of course, these guys can also block, do give me some defence too. Shout out also has to go to Aftermath Analyst as it literally helps with descending, as well as getting me back my lands, and Icetill Explorer. Icetill is a bonkers card. Does everything I need my deck to do. Thank you Wizards for printing it lol.

The win-cons:

Conclusion: Honestly, this is one of the most fun decks I have built to play. Its pretty resilient to most things, I can rebuild quickly, and its just a blast to play. It is also pretty powerful once you start to get some momentum. You have an affordable commander at so its hard to hate out the commander, and there are so many different lines to can take (some of which I havent even mentioned such as The Gitrog Monster loops). After playing and tweaking for like 9 months, its become a favourite, and yes... Dregde can work in EDH

Always happy with advice etc and feel free to drop a +1 if you enjoy.
