Introduction

Mairsil, Pretend to be Competitive is a mid-range reanimator deck. Similar to Opus Thief, we try to gain card advantage with wheels and an advantage/denial engine. We then take advantage of discarding by reanimating our win conditions.

Why Mairsil?

Mairsil was selected as the commander over more commonly seen options (Kess/Partners/etc) for three main reasons.

1. Mairsil combos with Buried Alive without requiring a reanimation spell in hand.
2. Mairsil is a cool dude and he never gets to play at the competitive tables.

Combos

Let's go through the combos in the deck.

• Mairsil, the Pretender + Buried Alive : This is a very mana heavy option (2B + 1RBBBBU), but allows you to combo without having a reanimation spell in hand. Buried Alive for Balthor the Defiled , Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker , and Zealous Conscripts . Cage Balthor the Defiled , pay BBB and reanimate Kiki-Conscripts. Tap Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker targeting Zealous Conscripts , target Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker with it's ETB and repeat.
• Buried Alive + Reanimate / Necromancy / Animate Dead : Buried Alive for Phyrexian Delver , Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker , and Zealous Conscripts / Pestermite . Reanimate Phyrexian Delver targeting Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and tap Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker making a copy of Phyrexian Delver . Bring back Zealous Conscripts / Pestermite and repeat the kiki-conscripts combo above.
• Wheel of Fortune + Notion Thief / Narset, Parter of Veils : Everyone discards their hand and you refill.
• Wheel of Fortune + Underworld Breach + Lion's Eye Diamond : Wheel through everyone's decks until you get an above combo into the graveyard. Cast Reanimate / Necromancy / Animate Dead from your graveyard with the Underworld Breach effect using Lion's Eye Diamond for mana.
• Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Sea-Dasher Octopus : Mutate the cutest octopus onto kiki, make a million octopi on the end step before your turn. Untap and attack before those little guys die.

Game Plan

Early Game

• Get out some mana rocks.
• Watch out for fast combo decks and start finding the appropriate hate pieces for your table.
• Lay down some card advantage engines ( Mystic Remora / Waste Not )
• Attack people with the cutest octopus .

Mid Game

• Start filling your graveyard with reanimation targets.
• Look for a reanimate spell. If the shields are down or you have protection, go for it.
• Try to get a one-sided wheel.

Late Game

• Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker combo for the win.
