Summary

This is based on the preconstructed Sworn to Darkness Commander 2014. I'm working to identify cards to trim and replace with the pricier cards that synergize with this deck. The driving themes for this deck are flying, life gain, and a ton of mana. The commander is capable of 2 of these, supported by strong creatures to provide unblockable damage (flying/intimidate) and utility (like life gain). This is meant for and usually played in larger games, making things like Gray Merchant of Asphodel , Kokusho, the Evening Star , and Massacre Wurm worth it.

Mana Gain

This deck leverages some high mana cost and X cost cards, requiring ways to get a lot of mana. There are multiple ways of achieving this:

  1. Lands: Cabal Coffers , Cabal Stronghold , and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx (and Thespian's Stage ).

  2. Land tutor: Expedition Map to tutor for the above, almost always Cabal Coffers if it's not already out.

  3. Ramp: Caged Sun and Black Market (and Jet Medallion ).

  4. Creatures: Crypt Ghast , Nirkana Revenant , and Magus of the Coffers .

  5. Mana rocks: Sol Ring , Charcoal Diamond , Thought Vessel , and Thran Dynamo .

  6. A lot of tutors and draw power for any key piece.

Win Conditions

While I typically try to avoid infinite combos, sometimes I can't resist (there's only 1). The following are the primary win conditions:

  1. Exquisite Blood + Defiant Bloodlord and any life gain or life loss instantly wins the game. Even without Defiant Bloodlord out, Exquisite Blood is powerful.

  2. In the late game where you likely have a lot of mana and some life loss has occurred, dump mana into Profane Command or Exsanguinate .

  3. Any recursion with Gray Merchant of Asphodel . If Defiant Bloodlord is out when Gray Merchant hits, someone might be dying.

  4. Hitting people in the face in the air as majority of the creatures have flying or intimidate.

  5. A playgroup where tokens are prevalent makes Massacre Wurm with something like Blood Artist very powerful.

Other

The rest of the deck contains card draw and answers. There are a good amount of board wipes, as much varied removal as mono black can have, and a few cards too fun not to include (like Temporal Extortion ).

Next Steps

I don't get to play this deck a ton as it's toward the top of my play group's power level, but when the time comes, I'll make some upgrades.

  1. Change a Swamp to Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth , this buffs cards like Cobal Coffers, Cabal Stronghold , Caged Sun , etc.

  2. Change a Swamp to Extraplanar Lens .

  3. Swap out something for Dread or No Mercy , maybe one of the weaker sorceries like Promise of Power .
