Anafenza, the Foremost Mill Deck (Budget EDH)

Commander / EDH BGW (Abzan, Junk) Budget Mill

Anafenza, the Foremost was the first commander I used, and I've been trying to figure out what to do with her since. For a while I thought of making a +1/+1 counter deck with her, but her first ability only has minor synergy with that theme. The Abzan colors are good for it, but still. Furthermore, what seemed most useful (and annoying) about her is her second ability.

So this deck is meant to maximize the amount of creatures (and other cards) opponents will have to put in their graveyards. Doing that means milling and killing, so I've also tried to include enough mill cards that at least one opponent might be defeated that way, and I've included several cheap targeted removal and board wipes.

One of my favorite synergies of this deck is Dryad Militant. In combination with Anafenza, opponents will have to exile all creatures, instants, and sorceries that would have been put in their graveyards. You'll have to exile all instants and sorceries, too, as the Dryad doesn't discriminate like Anafenza, but it's worth it. It should be a real pain for any recursion or control decks.

Magister of Worth is also awesome since if all goes well you should be the only one with creatures in your graveyard.

Given how upset your friends will be with all this deck's milling and graveyard hate, you'll make yourself a target. Try to hang back and wait to cast Anafenza until you can give her hexproof and/or indestructible when needed. It should be lots of fun, and it is refreshingly affordable! The mana curve is also very efficient.

Updates Add

In order to make the strategy of this deck clearer, I added custom categories. There is lots of mill, lots of removal, and lots of indestructible, as well as a significant amount of hexproof. There is also decent recursion, since creatures in the deck will need to be able to be reused if possible. Milling is not a typical EDH strategy, and typically blue would be the color to have, but with Anafenza exiling every creature, there is extra insurance against decks with a lot of creature recursion. Plus, Anafenza is fairly strong on her own.

Ideally, I see this deck winning in a combination of ways: 1) milling at least one opponent; 2) voltroning Anafenza somewhat and taking out at least one opponent with commander damage; and 3) old-fashioned beat down with the angel flyers in the deck. The deck is fairly commander-centric, but once the pieces are in place the milling and beat down elements can work without her if your opponents find a way to permanently disable her, such as with Darksteel Mutation or Imprisoned in the Moon.
