Netherborn Phalanx Discussion

Netherborn Phalanx is kinda like what you are looking for, Poisonbelly Ogre isn't great but it does that thing. There's Massacre Wurm for some creature pain. That all I found in black. But if you are just trying to hurt your opponents for playing creatures? There's Kaervek the Merciless , he is really good at that. There's other ways to hurt you opponents. Like Polluted Bonds or Painful Quandary . There is lots of ways to create the pain train, if you need help building that deck , I'm your guy. Just tag me in the deck you start to build or are already building and I'll lend my hand.

Also, I see Helm and Trike combo at a glance. Since both of those have pieces costing the same, you can use Clutch of the Undercity , Dimir House Guard , Ethereal Usher , and Netherborn Phalanx for additional tutors. Also, Walking Ballista is a second copy of Trike.

I like Undying Evil for this kind of deck. Does great things with Gary, Tree of Perdition, etc. Also, since you can sac at instant speed, Mesmeric Fiend permanently exiles, since you can sac it in response to the ETB trigger, making it better than Kitesail Freebooter and other newer cards that have been worded to avoid that interaction. I agree that Grave Pact is a must-have. Some more ramp and card draw wouldn't hurt. I'm partial to Jet Medallion , Charcoal Diamond , Mind Stone , and Thought Vessel for rocks, and Syphon Mind is my favorite mono-black draw spell.

I would cut Ritual of Soot, since it scales very poorly in EDH. Crux of Fate , Damnation (if you've got the cash), Decree of Pain , Toxic Deluge , take your pick.

As for lands, Crypt of Agadeem would be good here. Phyrexian Tower just got reprinted. It's a bit pricey, but it is VERY good, and having been $60 just a few months ago with no likely reprint in the near future, pick it up now. Temple of the False God is a bad card, full stop. It is never correct to include it. Ever. That's not just me talking, but virtually every EDH content creator out there.

I'm not sure how you feel about the budget issue with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed , but it would be a very good addition, even before taking the combo with Walking Ballista or Triskelion into account. It's a solid addition to a black deck, and there are some affordable tutors that can get both pieces like Beseech the Queen , Diabolic Intent (on theme, so maybe add it regardless), Sidisi, Undead Vizier (also on theme!), and Netherborn Phalanx .

As for reanimation, Rise from the Grave is pretty inefficient, and upgrading to Animate Dead , Victimize (on theme!), Dread Return (apparently there's a lot of sac'ing in black, who knew?), Sepulchral Primordial (great with repeatable ETB effects), Rise of the Dark Realms (expensive, but a black staple in EDH), Necromancy , Thrilling Encore (great if you can sac with Dictate of Erebos or Grave Pact ), Ever After (one more mana for twice the value), Whisper, Blood Liturgist , Champion of Stray Souls (so much sac'ing), Hell's Caretaker (again, so much sac'ing), Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni , Rescue from the Underworld (on-theme), Infernal Offering (sac!), Necromantic Summons (strictly better than Rise), Zombify , and Footsteps of the Goryo (...sac).

The last thing I would do is check out the EDHREC pages for Yahenni, the color black, and sacrifice to see what others are running. Good luck!

I actually made a deck pretty similar to this one. Her it is if you want to check it out: Mogis the hate god

what I found out through play testing is that creatures more or less suck for group slug strategies. There are plenty of really good creatures that fit this deck such as Zo-Zu the Punisher however I've found that if you relly too much on your creatures for incremental damage they are too susceptible to removal and board wipes.

In your case I believe you can safely get rid of any creature that produces mana. In most edh deck you only need about 10ish mana rocks and right now you have 11 as regular artifacts so I think your ramp will be fine.

Besides ramping creatures I believe that cutting these cards would also be advantageous:

With all those cards cut I'd then start putting in more group slug type enchantments. The reason I like these enchantments more is because unlike creatures, most board wipes dont hit them and most people dont have a ton of enchantment removal. There are tons of these group slug type cards so I'm not going to say which ones would be best for your deck because most of them would work. But I like these ones:

I would also just reconsider these cards, I haven't personally played them so I can't be certain of how strong they are, but they dont seem to quite fit the deck.

  • Cruel Reality It seems tempting but it only targets one opponent and is super expensive. I don't believe its worth its cost
  • Browbeat I would personally rather have guaranteed card draw, try Ancient Craving instead
  • Mana Geyser lots of mana, but what are you spending it on? if you had more X costing spells then it may be worth it but for now think of how bad of a top deck this would be with no cards in hand.

And of course I would strongly recommend running some dual lands to help smooth out your mana consistency. Here are some of the really budget ones:

You have a strong core here once again but I just feel that some of your card slots could be better spent. Hope all this helps

I think you need an Eternal Scourge for this deck.

AH HA! I finally see figured out what this deck is really needing. More punch.
Specifically, this deck should be maximizing the 'creature enters the battlefield' effects.
You are creature one or more token copies of a creature.
Those creatures should not just sit there looking at you like an idiot. Make those token work.
I know that the token come into play tapped and attacking, but by using the ETB triggers those tokens will be doing double duty.
Another thing I noticed while looking at what other people are doing with this deck is the use of +1/+1 counters to power things.
Not sure if that is a direction this deck need to go, so I'm not going to use that too much.
With that new idea in mind, lets look at some swaps.
OUT: Budoka Gardener, Charnelhoard Wurm, Emissary of Grudges, Indulgent Tormentor, Rubblehulk, Scute Mob, Scuttling Doom Engine, Seedborn Muse, Zendikar Incarnate
Not sure about: Loyal Apprentice, Loyal Guardian, Loyal Subordinate, Rampaging Baloths

IN, with no particualr order:
(I'm going to list more cards than we take out so that you have some options to consider.)
Wood Elves, note that the Forest does not have to be a basic Forest. We can fecth a dual or shock land.
Eternal Witness, to get back any other card.
Greenwarden of Murasa, another option for card recursion.
Solemn Simulacrum, land fetch and card draw ine one.
Broodmate Dragon, because dragons.
Garna, the Bloodflame, for more graveyard recursion.
Fleshbag Marauder and/or, Merciless Executioner to help control the board. We can use the sac
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord, fattie with life draining ability.
Mindslicer, so that we can make people's lives suck.
Pilgrim's Eye, land search and flying chump blocker. the poor man's Solemn Simulacrum
Hoarding Dragon, because it never hurts to get useful artifacts.
Netherborn Phalanx, this one has always been good to me in group games. Really punishes the token player.
Puppeteer Clique, so that we can eat and exile opponenet's creatures.
Dire Fleet Daredevil, why not cast other people's spells?
Balustrade Spy, screw your deck.
Avalanche Riders, screw your land.
Sadistic Hypnotist, screw your hand.
Entomber Exarch, give us some nice options. It is a bit weak, but useful and cheap.
Bogardan Hellkite, becuase damage is almost always good. But I'm not sure about the mana cost on this one.
Molten Primordial, let's use our sacrifice outlets on other peoples stuff.
Viscera Seer, so that we can filter the top deck when we sacrifice creatures.
Hornet Queen, tokens making tokens, now with deathtouch.
Feldon of the Third Path, create tokens of creatures that don't get exiled.
Kresh the Bloodbraided or Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper as alternate commanders and good creatures.

Not creatues but need to be in the deck:
Warstorm Surge, let's turn each token into direct damage in addition to it's ETB.
Path of Discovery, why not explore the deck?
Evolutionary Leap, I'm not sure about this one, I like the ability to fetch more creatues from the deck, but we may need more dicard outlets to really make this work for use.
Goblin Bombardment, cheap to cast, multiple uses, may help finish off the last opponent.

So, let me know what you think.
Great. Thanks. Now after helping you with this deck, I'm going to have to finish my jund deck. I'll see if I can get my list up in a couple of days.

This looks like a pretty fun deck, I rather like Gonti ETB as a theme.

I would definitely take Rune-Scarred Demon and Sepulchral Primordial off the maybe list and into the deck. They are some of the strongest ETBs around and are definitely perfect for this deck.

Other interesting ETBs to consider:

Creature control:Fleshbag Marauder, Merciless Executioner, Abyssal Gatekeeper, Slum Reaper: If your playgroup likes their indestructible/hexproof stuff. I would not run all of course but pick your favorite.

Revival:Puppeteer Clique, Entomber Exarch, GravediggerClique is one of my favorite creatures period, really handy to have. Exarch offers options on ETB and Gravedigger is a classic but his relatively low cost can be really nice.

Card Draw:Phyrexian Rager, Phyrexian GargantuaThough they can deal a bit of damage to you but Black does not really care about that these critters can refill your hand nicely.

Other:Netherborn Phalanx: For both playing and tutoring. Can really hurt with a Panharmonicon in play.

The Life and Limb/Sporemound in your saproling list goes infinite. You just need some way to end the loop. Evolutionary Leap is a great way to get rid of 'mound, since you can use it for value with any of your tokens anyway.

For other wincons, Nature's Revolt/Natural Affinity/Kamahl, Fist of Krosa aren't completely on theme but open up win cons with Netherborn Phalanx/Massacre Wurm/a million other black effects.
