I decided to add Boseiju, Who Shelters All and Netherborn Phalanx to my deck, and I'm also considering replacing Treasury Thrull with Sun Titan to get my more important things on the field easier. It's not only a much bigger body but it's also a little less mana intensive.

Oh, I forgot all about Netherborn Phalanx. that's perfect! I have a few ways to transmute it over and over again if necessary too. I'll probably put Expedition Map in there as well, I don't really think I need both Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots anyway.

I also run a Dovescape + Guile inspired deck: Ertai likes Birds. You can take a look and maybe you will get some more inspiration. One card I'd include is Netherborn Phalanx! pretty sweet for tutoring (any of the pieces, or, massacre wurm) and damaging just because people have loads of birds :p

Okay so, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that the point of this deck is to use your opponent's best cards against them by first milling them then stealing them from the graveyard.

So in terms of cards that mill, I wouldn't actually use too many, because we want room for abusing those cards in the graveyard. I would say like 21ish? Here are the ones that you have that I think you should keep:

These along with Life's Finale, Jace, Memory Adept, Phenax, God of Deception, Undead Alchemist, Nemesis of Reason, Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker, Trepanation Blade, Keening Stone, Sword of Body and Mind, Mind Grind, Mindcrank, Duskmantle Guildmage (these two are good because of the combo with Bloodchief Ascension, not on their own, obviously), Startled Awake  Flip, and Talent of the Telepath puts you right on target of 21. It's a solid mill package, so I'd drop Dismal Failure, Psychic Strike, Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, Liliana of the Veil (I know it seems great, but I really think that a deck like this needs more focus on the goal), and Necromaster Dragon.

Next, the abuse! This is one of the most untapped aspects of many mill decks, and it saddens me. What we need is an array of ways to get effects from opponents' graveyards, but the cards that we have unfortunately usually limit themselves to what card type they can get out of graveyards, such as artifacts, creatures, or instants/sorceries. According to EDHREC.com, the average deck runs 24 creatures, 12 artifacts, and 18 instants + sorceries. Based on those numbers, we should see at least 9 creature-stealing cards, at least 5 artifact stealing cards, and at least 7 instant/sorcery stealing cards, since we probably want 21 of these as well. For the artifact stealing cards, there are only two, and they are Geth, Lord of the Vault and Beacon of Unrest, so lets include 3 tutors to get these two cards as well. Those can be Demonic Tutor, Brainspoil, and Beseech the Queen. Next, the creature ones! I would say the best 9 are Reanimate, Animate Dead, Coffin Queen, Necromancy, Chainer, Dementia Master, Extract from Darkness, Ashen Powder, Sepulchral Primordial, and Nezumi Graverobber. Lastly, the instant/sorceries can be gotten via Memory Plunder, Spelltwine, Wrexial, the Risen Deep, Chancellor of the Spires, and Diluvian Primordial, so let's include Ethereal Usher and Netherborn Phalanx to be able to tutor for Memory Plunder if the commander isn't able to do what we need to do and Geth, Lord of the Vault otherwise. These tutors are really going to make sure you get what is best, as opposed to lots of cards like Jace's Mindseeker that get you a random card. What we want is assurance that the card we are getting is going to be impactful.

In short, for the aikido aspect, I suggest dropping Jace's Mindseeker, Phyrexian Metamorph, Puppeteer Clique, Gruesome Encore, Rise from the Grave, and Soul Ransom in order to add Beacon of Unrest, Demonic Tutor, Brainspoil, Beseech the Queen, Reanimate, Animate Dead, Necromancy, Nezumi Graverobber, Coffin Queen, Chainer, Dementia Master, Ashen Powder, Memory Plunder, Ethereal Usher, and Netherborn Phalanx.

That concludes the 43 cards I think you should absolutely run (21 mill, 21 reanimate, Bloodchief Ascension). That gives you 20 slots to put in whatever you would like after you put in the 37 manabase cards, but I think you will probably want about 7 ramp, 7 draw, and 7 spot removal (maybe fit a Laboratory Maniac as mentioned earlier), but I think you got those handled!

And yes, those two cards you mentioned aren't going to work, not necessarily because they're weak, but because they're too expensive when there are better options for cheaper.

By the way, another tutor option to consider would be Transmute. The only cards with CMC 6 and Transmute are Ethereal Usher and Netherborn Phalanx. I think the Usher would be better for this deck, since Soulflayer can't get unblockable you can perhaps give it to him if you manage to get both cards out. The Netherborn could be used on the sideboard against creature and/or token heavy decks.

n0bunga: Thanks for the fast response! Here are my thoughts on those:

Archetype of Finality was an attempt to make sure Alesha (and the reanimation target) survives combat. Did you not find it useful enough in that role?

I see your point on Azorius Justiciar.

I have Stonehorn Dignitary in here already, but I thought it might be handy to have Blinding Angel for redundancy (and since it has evasion, it might stick around to keep one player locked down while I use my recursion on something else).

Kor Cartographer was there to grab Shocks, and the Flagstones/Crucible/Stack combo is WAY too much money if I plan to build this IRL.

I also see your point on Noosegraf Mob. Getting ten power for 2 mana is pretty sweet though...

Netherborn Phalanx is too conditional, I guess...

I can't afford Fulminator Mage. For now, Goblin Grenadiers will have to take that slot. There is frequently someone with no creatures in my meta, though, so I think he'll go through a reasonable amount of time.

Vampire Hexmage kills planeswalkers and neuters Atraxa. I'm a fan...But maybe Thief of Blood could do the job better...

Oppression is so viciously fun, though. And I don't plan to cast many spells, since much of my deck works by recursion from the GY...

Possibility Storm is in there for the lock with Eidolon of Rhetoric/Rule of Law. Nobody gets to play non-commander spells ever again!

Okay, let's get at 'er. Let's weed out the ones that offer the least amount of misery and perhaps contemplate more hate:

Let's cut the non-staxArchetype of Finality - deathtouch is nice, and I thought of this in my alesha build but ultiamtely it's not going to be something you buried alive or entomb for.

Azorius Justiciar - similar reasons as above.

Blinding Angel -- swap for Stonehorn Dignitary

Dauthi Mindripper - discard is nice, but we can get meaner

Kor Cartographer - ramp is fine, but we've mana rocks for this, and and I'll be perfectly honest I was never in need of it. If you want to go that route, Flagstones of Trokair, Crucible of Worlds and Smokestack can help recur that.

Noosegraf Mob - not feeling this, you've the ability to create 5 zombies as sac fodder, which I totally get, but I feel we can do more, or that your other creatures do more outside of token gen.

Netherborn Phalanx - contingent on others always having a creature. I'd rather you board in Reveillark to complete the Karmic Kombo.

Goblin Grenadiers - swap for Fulminator Mage

Vampire Hexmage - unless you're planning on going Dark Depths, I'm not too keen on this dude.

Rotting Rats, Delirium Skeins, Oppression - I like the idea of these. Their detriment is your benefit, but Wild Guess helps you in that you choose when you discard, and you draw from that. Nahiri, the Harbinger could also benefit greatly here. She's card advantage and filtering, removal and a useless ultimate we don't care for.
