I was inspired to build (or at least brew) a monoblue Urza cEDH deck. I'm still not familiar with how cEDH decks are made and balanced, but I know Urza is insanely powerful. The primary win condition is to generate infinite mana with one of many combos, use Urza to exile your entire deck, then cast Thassa's Oracle or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries and win using all the protection in your deck to secure the victory. Urza has some sentimental value for me since I pulled him myself, and in the local cEDH meta people pull out all the stops for their decks - I can't afford to play a friendly game there.

Again, cEDH is an entirely different beast than the casual EDH I'm used to, so any critiques or advice for building and/or playing a deck like this would be greatly appreciated! I know some basics (I overheard somebody else discussing an Urza deck saying "don't keep a starting hand that isn't turn 2 Urza") but I'm still not sure how to balance things like countermagic with other things like card draw and tutors.

Notable combos include:

  • Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter - This is the staple infinite mana combo most decks will run; so long as you have at least 3 mana in the form of other nonland permanents this will net infinite mana, and it is made even easier by Urza turning all of your artifacts into mana rocks.
  • Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth - Another infinite mana combo, this one generating infinite colorless mana with a initial cost. Fortunately Urza only needs generic mana to activate his ability, and you can generate a pool of colorless mana and begin tapping the Monolith for one blue mana and untapping with the colorless if you need blue mana for countermagic.
  • Urza, Lord High Artificer + Winter Orb and Static Orb + Urza, Lord High Artificer - As with any artifact tapper, you can use Urza to tap the Orb on the end step prior to your turn to guarantee you get to untap while restricting your opponents.
  • Howling Mine + Urza, Lord High Artificer - A similar but opposite synergy combo to the previous one, you can use Urza to tap your Mine down at the end of your turn (or on your opponents' upkeeps, if you have Unwinding Clockin play) so nobody else gets to draw the additional card but yourself.
  • Narset, Parter of Veils + Windfall - Why would you let anybody else have a hand in this game?
