v1.0
mookie990, 8 years ago
Formally upgrading to 1.0! Not a ton new in this update, but I do have a bunch of new tech cards that I look forward to giving away.
-Orim's Thunder - difficult to actually get a 2-for-1 with it, plus I have sufficient creature removal already.
-Planar Outburst - don't ever want to animate one of my lands, so it's just an expensive wrath.
-Pacifism - already have plenty of creature removal, plus combat ability isn't the scary part for most creatures.
-Gather Specimens - triple blue, plus situational.
-Wild Ricochet - I'm not casting a lot of spells worth ricocheting. Fun card though, so may come back someday. I'll always remember the time I ricochet'd a Verdant Confluence....
-Mass Calcify - 7 mana is a lot for a wrath, even if it is asymmetric.
-Geistblast - again, not much worth forking.
-Trail of Evidence - not really a spellslinger deck.
-Reverberate - again, not much worth forking.
-Rewind - a bit expensive for a counterspell. Unlikely that I'll have much to do with the leftover 4 mana.
-Divine Reckoning - when you cast a wrath, you don't want most things to die. You want everything to die.
-Mind Unbound - a bit too clunky for my taste.
-3 Mountain
I also cut Spelltwine at some point, but not entirely sure what I replaced it with.
+Hallowed Burial - a wrath without that pesky downside of allowing recursion.
+Assault Suit, +Lunar Force - janky combo alongside Starfield of Nyx. Might put in more tutors to make it an actual win condition someday, but not at the moment.
+Rule of Law - I generally try to hold open mana on other people's turns, so shouldn't affect me that much. Plus, good to give away, and means people can't bait counterspells/removal.
+Karmic Justice - testing. I give away a lot of my stuff, so might not do much, but still seems decent if I can't give them away for some reason.
+Torpor Orb - shuts down a lot of decks, has no effect on mine. Sounds good!
+Rest in Peace - see above. Fun to give away too.
+Oath of Lieges - good for giving away, and allows a bit of ramping (or catching up, at least).
+Counterspell - the original. Haven't owned any until recently.
+Pyroblast - a bit more narrow than I would like, but someone is usually playing blue.
+Phyrexian Furnace - been wanting more grave hate, and this can cycle in a pinch.
+Mind's Dilation - testing. Expensive enchantment that technically doesn't do anything when it hits the field, but it does start doing things once my opponents start taking their turns.
+Swiftwater Cliffs, Highland Lake, Stone Quarry - ETB tapped, but at least they're better fixing.
EDIT:
-Hindering Light - a bit more situational than I'd like. Noticed that very few of the decks I play against are running targeted artifact/enchantment removal - most of it is untargeted (Merciless Eviction, Tragic Arrogance) or on a creature (Acidic Slime). Thus, Hindering Light doesn't actually do its job most of the time.
+Divine Reckoning - the best of the wraths I have on hand, although I don't necessarily love it. Would rather have something like Tragic Arrogance, but meh. I do think this deck wants the 4th wrath though, and maybe a 5th - it wants to draw at least one every game. Not sure if it wants multiple, since they can get stuck in hand if there's never a good time.
Edit the second:
-Phyrexian Rebirth - 6 is a lot for a wrath, and the token isn't that relevant except as a blocker.
+Tragic Arrogance - enormous blowout against any enchantment/artifact-heavy decks, plus I can skew it with donations. Bad vs sac outlets, but those are almost nonexistent for noncreatures.
-Anticipate - being able to hold up mana is great, but raw dig isn't really what I'm looking for.
+Dig Through Time - digs deep, and card advantage. Delving is a bit of a cost, but I don't do much recursion.

Cackling counterpart has made an entrance. I like how it gives me the flexibility of being any creature I have on the board, so can be a pseudo counterspell, discard, pumping or land lockdown. I'm really aiming to address the issues that faeries can have against aggro, so the idea is to get rid of their valuable cards early through discard and counters, and then be able to out last them once we are both low in card numbers. The swords in the maybe board will likely make an appearance in the sideboard...Kaladesh Update
MightyPazza, 8 years ago
The first obvious change is cutting the 4 Tormenting Voice for 4 Cathartic Reunion.
The other change is to test out Scrapheap Scrounger, currently replacing the single Haunted Dead and Lightning Axe the latter has been moved to the SB for now.
Scrapheap Scrounger has worked out so far the loss of Haunted Dead's discard isn't that bad with the combination of Conflagrate and Cathartic Reunion. This deck took me to 5th at the recent GPT.

Pre-Kaladesh Miscellaneousness
mookie990, 8 years ago
Kaladesh is coming out soon, and looks to have a bunch of sweet things for this deck and others. Biggest complaint with it at the moment is that most of the artifact synergy cards aren't artifacts themselves (compare all the Esper cards from Alara block). Still, have a few swaps to make before it comes out.
-Diabolic Tutor - was unable to combo off in a recent game due to it being too expensive. 4 mana is not something I'm ever happy paying for something that does so little.
-Clever Impersonator - never had any particular synergy with the deck, and duplicating most artifacts is win-more or redundant.
-Planar Cleansing - occasionally amazing, but 6 mana and it kills all my artifacts as collateral damage.
+Phyrexian Furnace - been wanting another piece of grave hate, and it cantrips in a pinch, which gives it the nod over Tormod's Crypt.
+Cursed Totem - noticed that this deck is pretty low on activated creature abilities, so testing it out. Don't know how efficient it will be at shutting down other decks though.
+Merciless Eviction - when you absolutely want something gone, accept no substitutes. Will be primarily creature removal. I've had it played against me often enough that I know mass artifact exile is crippling.

As Finished as it can go
Bushwhack, 8 years ago
Outside of tuning, I have all the cards I am willing to get in the near future. As it stands currently I can borrow Snapcaster Mage. I just dont see any point in spending so much right now.

Expensive but better card replacement.
Llamaaway, 8 years ago
If you have the money to, replace Caged Sun with Extraplanar Lens, then replace all your swamps with Snow-Covered Swamps. When using extraplanar lens, you must kill one of your own lands, but then everyone with a swamp gets extra mana. Although if you pay a bit more and replace all 28 swamps with snow covered ones, then anybody else with a swamp will not get extra mana, because it is a different type of basic swamp land. Since Extraplanar lens is cheaper mana wise, it is a decent alternative.
Added some and dropped some.
Llamaaway, 8 years ago
-
Removed Consume Spirit: Although it is considered nice to use extra mana to gain some life back, Kokusho, the Evening Star is much more powerful so removing it leaves us to add something better.
-
Removed Thespian's Stage: Just wasn't needed in the deck; if you really want a land copy, you can go with Vesuva, but I'm still not putting it in sideboard.
-
Removed Charcoal Diamond from sideboard: With Cabal Coffers in there and quite a few artifacts, its really just not needed in or near the deck.
-
Moved Skullcage is being moved to sideboard: Being replaced by card below and dealt only 2 damage, and was only in some instances; don't be mistaken, however, still a great card!
-
Added Tree of Perdition: amazing card overall. This deck would obviously struggle with players who will gain back the life. With this card you can punish them and have either a great blocker or trade health with it if you have low health.
-
Howling Mine added from sideboard to main: Just a really good card and will most likely help you, you can also swap it out with Font of Mythos so you can add Leyline of the Void or Dismember.
-
Nighthowler added to main: Just a good lil dude early game and has huge potential late game when everything is dead and stuff.. Might be good to alternate this one with Leyline of the Void because the two contradict each other.

A Question?
Truniq88, 8 years ago
So I tap Warf to pilot my Coptter it becomes a creature that's a 33 and essentially does the same thing warf does but for a 3/3 and I can discard a creature and still pay 2 to make a 3/2 eldrazi but if I equip stithcer's gaft to it and attack I can hit for 6 then the vehicle is no longer a creature and it unequippes right?? or like how does that work. WOW just realized they watered down the card with that permanent crap so not to break the vehicles deck that's so B.S
Rotation
Dlippert22, 8 years ago
I have updated with the rotation, although I have not added anything from the new set. Sad Fox and Fast Lands will likely get added. Fixed the mana issues, eliminated the double BB and stuck with a more consistent draw. Hopeful to take this to a FNM soon.
Thinking
Truniq88, 8 years ago
So I was thinking of putting my land down one to two more because I need just need 3 lands on turn three so we shall see but a card I really like would be Smuggler's Coppter and 2 or 3 altrs reap so I can keep my card advantage and get rid of the ovalchase daredevil any thoughts??? Still working on sideboard
3rd Edition
TrixerFurKids, 8 years ago
The first version of this deck was a mess. The 2nd was pretty good, but needed just a little bit of tuning. CUT notion thief, myojin of night's reach --- as dinging people with megrim and liliana's caress is one of the more powerful win conditions of the deck itself, it's somewhat anti-synergistic for my opponents to have no hand. also, it tends to make you enemy #1 and the deck, being more about using your things against you and less about control, isn't really set up to handle that aggression thran dynamo -- there are a lot of rocks in the deck and thran dynamo only produces colorless in a 3 color deck that sometimes requires as many as 3 of any one mana symbol. not useful enough for a slot. shattering pulse -- although a good tool for artifact destruction, its replacement (capsize) should be more versatile. for permanent removal for artifacts/enchantments, i look to nicol bolas, planeswalker arcbond -- since the deck was changed, my general is cast less and less often. this combat trick, though amusing, just isn't worth a slot and ties in with the reasons i cut myojin and notion thief ADDITIONS archfiend of depravity -- the regulars in my playgroup like to make a bunch of tokens and spam the board with creatures. 'nuff said. whip of erebos -- the deck needs to get to mid/late game to do what it's intended to. this can keep me in the game and also bring something of mine back one last time psychosis crawler -- a decent win condition supported with consecrated sphinx, rhystic study, waste not, all the wheel effects, etc capsize -- grixis colors can't really remove enchantments. but this might work for those that are extremely problematic, especially combined with a wheel or a hit from nicol bolas insurrection -- as i mentioned, boards get pretty flooded with creatures in my typical playgroup, making this a good solid way to end the game.

Kaladesh Update!
McMayhem, 8 years ago
+1 Nissa, Vital Force
+1 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
-1 Wing Shards
-1 Return to Dust
Trying some new Planeswalkers, both of which seem outrageously strong in this deck. I'm not certain about Chandra, but I guess we'll see. It just so happens that the weakest cards in the deck are Sunforger targets, though I might swap one back in if Eldritch Evolution continues to underperform.

Added Renegade Freighter for Aradara Express. Also added Start Your Engines for some backup just in case my crew gets Fumigated.
Sideboard and main board chage
DaDannyWay, 8 years ago
After playing and discussing the board more with others i remembered Meddling Mage, great card for the board, took out some spot removal for more other sideboard cards. I'm expecting the board to change more too as it seeing more play. Also I took out a copy of Aluren as i found how helpful it can be to have Enlightened Tutor over the fourth copy. You can cascade into it with Shardless Agent, Tutor a side board card like Rest in Peace or Tsabo's Web. Also game one it can hit 9 targets. Turns out to be it can make a bad hand decent. More updates to come!
Card changes
JDegenerate, 8 years ago
Removed: Arashin Cleric, Mighty Leap, Scroll of Avacyn, Fertile Thicket, and exchanged 3 Plains for 2 FA Plains and a FA Forest. Also changed the card art in the list to the BFZ FA lands, as that's all I'm using. Fanceh.
Added: 2x Patron of the Valiant, 2x Sandblast, and 4x Safe Passage. Patron likely not a permanent addition, but it seemed interesting to me.

Modern Win-a-box - WINNER - 3-0
ericwhet, 8 years ago
Well, that's almost unbelievable, but I pulled off a 3-0 today to win my LGS's Modern win-a-box event today. I went 2-1 in every match, but had a ton of fun and only ever really felt like I didn't stand a chance when I got hit by a Scapeshift for 18 on T4.
Scapeshift/Valakut - 2-1 Won pretty handily in the first game with a great opener. I don't remember exactly what I had, but I dropped Legion Loyalist on turns 1 and 3 with a goblin pilediver in the middle to get a scoop. Second game he stomped me with the aforementioned T4 kill. Round 3 he had a pretty slow start and I had another fast one, resulting in fairly quick victory.
Esper Spirits - 2-1 Had a great opener in the first round and pretty much rolled in there for a T4 kill. Second round was an entirely different story, one of many Mana Leaks and Rattlechains and other nonsense, resulting in him eventually getting the victory. I basically had game 3 wrapped up from the beginning, but he stabilized at 1 life and it took me three draws to nab a Mogg Fanatic for the win, talk about stress!
RG Tron - 2-1 This match was for the box, but we agreed to split it before we played so it was a little more casual. Game 1 I somehow managed to win through a natural T3 tron, I'm still not sure how that was possible. Game 2 he dropped a timely Thragtusk and I couldn't get anything through. Game 3 was interesting, the most important thing to know is that Destructive Revelry works great to get a nasty Spellskite out of the way, surge a Reckless Bushwhacker, and go in for the kill.
Given that I saw two land based strategies, it may be worth nabbing something like Molten Rain for the sideboard. I never actually ended up boarding the Dismembers in. I've been working on getting the necessary pieces to run Naya Zoo and it may be worth splashing white in here to run Path to Exile in the mean time.
Finally Putting in Avenger
PurePazaak, 8 years ago
I've found that I don't often cast enough spells after landing Inexorable Tide to use it effectively. Contrarily, Avenger of Zendikar has effect as soon as it hits the field. Also, it fits the curve for Birthing Pod and Yisan, the Wanderer Bard, right after Triskelion.

No Ajani
GoodDinosaur, 8 years ago
I decided to remove Ajani because he's the only 3 drop in the deck and only slows it down. I might put in Nissa, but I'm not sure yet. Added the vines to increase my creature insurance.
