Phyrexian Furnace and Soul of New Phyrexia two useful artifacts that feed the phaeron trigger.

Hey! So I have a few suggestions. Feel free to ignore any/all of them:

  1. Cantrips are your friend in combo decks. Preordain and Ponder are the gold-standard here, since they dig pretty deep for one mana. You're including Brainstorm is good, but I'm not sure it's good enough without non-mana intensive shuffle effects (i.e. some form of fetch lands) to make sure you don't accidentally lock yourself with two cards you don't want on top. While cards like Prismatic Vista and Scalding Tarn can be expensive, depending on your meta something like Terramorphic Expanse or Evolving Wilds might be good enough. Flood Plain and Bad River are also worth considering. Other cantrips ( Opt , Sleight of Hand , Serum Visions ...) are ok but should be considered secondary to Preordain and friends.

  2. Grafdigger's Cage is currently one of the best hosers in EDH, and it does not stop Urza's ability (since Urza's ability exiles the card before casting it, you never cast spells directly from your library). I think it's better than Darksteel Relic , since it still taps for mana and can be a turn one play while having a direct effect on the board state. Tormod's Crypt is a similar card you may want to consider. I think Relic of Progenitus is better than Phyrexian Furnace , especially since you're not running Snapcaster Mage .

  3. Everflowing Chalice seems like a good rock. I've never been a fan of Mox Tantalite , since taking several turns to hit the board is a major drawback. Everflowing Chalice is a slightly worse Mind Stone , but you can cast it for zero when Urza is on the field and have a build-your-own Mox Sapphire .

  4. Retract and/or Hurkyl's Recall can act as pseudo- Paradoxical Outcome s for the purposes of rebuilding mana or building storm-count for Temporal Fissure . They're admittedly not as good, but since you're already running Paradoxical Outcome you may want a redundant card for that effect.

  5. You may want to revisit your counter-suite. Consider substituting more efficient cards for Dissolve and/or Exclude , since three mana is a lot to pay for a counterspell. Things like Spell Snare , Dispel , Spell Pierce , Swan Song , Pact of Negation and/or Delay are all good ways to protect your combo without using too much mana.

  6. I think Mystic Remora is probably better than Rhystic Study . First, it comes down faster (T1 or T2), which means it catches your opponents' rocks when they're casting them in the first few turns. Second, four mana is a lot less payable than one, so you're more likely to draw even in experienced metas. Finally, your strategy is typically going to be a combo strategy -- so you don't need a PERMANENT shield, just one that will last long enough to protect you until you go off with Urza.

  7. Cyclonic Rift is the best board wipe in blue. It's $20 nowadays, but if you can afford one you should definitely run it.

  8. Dig Through Time is an excellent card, as is Treasure Cruise (though I don't like cruise as much as dig in combo decks like this, since it sees fewer cards). Running one of them seems like a good idea.

  9. Chain of Vapor is REALLY good. If you can cast it and bounce an opposing stax piece ( Cursed Totem , Collector Ouphe , Damping Sphere ), it rarely gets reflected. And even if it is, you're likely to just be able to recast whatever they bounce on your board. More importantly, you can use it to bounce a bunch of your low-cost artifacts to both net mana and build storm. So... yea.

Good luck!

Hey DrkNinja,

it's a bit ironic to assemble the Avengers (aka The Gatewatch) to help to construct a Bolas-deck, but nevertheless here are my ideas:

First of all, I would discard :) the whole Nekusar-wheel-theme. Nekusar, the Mindrazer decks just do it better anyways and playing Wheel of Fortune, Reforge the Soul, Jace's Archivist or Windfall in your deck has some drawbacks. While they're great to enable your plan of using the opponents' graveyards, your decks' cmc is not low enough to exploit those cards. Additionally, your opponents would get a significant amount of cards out of it, too, which also undermines the whole handcontrol theme of your deck: What's the matter of making them discard through Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  Flip, when you're helping them to refill their hands the next turn? Cards like Megrim, Liliana's Caress or Fell Specter would have to go as well because they're only effective with the aforementioned cards.

So my proposal is to focus on discard and control. Cards like Painful Quandary, The Eldest Reborn, Waste Not, Oppression and Chains of Mephistopheles fit well and should stay. You could add Skull Rend or Liliana's Specter. You could also add cards that let your commander re-enter the battlefield like Ghostly Flicker. Some ninjas like Silent-Blade Oni or Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni do not only fit your theme but let you cast your commander again.

To get more information about your opponents' hands you could play Telepathy or Glasses of Urza. I usually go with Glasses of Urza alongside Trinket Mage.

You have to strengthen your control over the graveyards when you're making people discard. The Scarab God is already good here. But you need some more graveyard-hate like Relic of Progenitus or Phyrexian Furnace which give you a bit of a choice what to exile. Don't play Leyline of the Void in here.

I'd also add Solemn Simulacrum like multimedia proposed.

So far I mentioned 8 cards which should be cut, so here are 22 more: Kess, Dissident Mage, Nightveil Specter, Mind's Dilation, Omniscience, Torment of Hailfire, Disrupt Decorum, Entreat the Dead, Anvil of Bogardan, Go for the Throat, Blasphemous Act, Stunning Reversal, Thrilling Encore, Leyline of Anticipation (most of the permanents don't have to be played at instant speed. Casting leyline is just doing nothing for the turn), Bloodchief Ascension, Countersquall, Desertion, Preordain, Thoughtseize, Library of Leng, Disciple of Bolas, Hour of Devastation, Tormenting Voice.

That's all for now. Good luck with your deck!

  • If you have Mishra's Bauble or Urza's Bauble as your cmc 0 artifact to recur but no win con in hand you can loop both indefinitely to draw as many cards as you want on your opponents next upkeep. If Spellbook is out on the table there is no punishment for hand size reduction (buzz off jin gitaxis!). If you have to discard to a wheel you still have access to looping creatures from the graveyard by playing Teshar, Ancestor’s Apostle + any artifact on the next turn.
  • Oblation on your own permanent, Ichor Wellspring, cycling Forsake the Worldly, all will draw you cards in a pinch.
  • Probably best way to draw a ton of cards on your turn is to have a mana combo going and abuse it with something like Phyrexian Furnace or Scrabbling Claws, paying 1 extra each time you sac them in order to draw until you find what you need.
  • If you are using Filigree Familiar as your recurrable creature be careful. The card draw is not a may ability so you can deck yourself if you get over zealous!

Hey,I also have a Sakaschima Deck and it's my favorit deck to play.

Here some tips from me after playing my deck over 2 years.

I play cards, which are not always good, so I play a lot of card fixing like Ponder, Preordain or Flash of Insight (Which btw is really good!). So I always find the right card to the right time.

I love so called "toolboxes" Cards that find the right cards. Mine are Trinket Mage, Muddle the Mixture and Tezzeret the Seeker . So I can find the card that I need. Some good enchantment well I can get Steal Enchantment with transmute or need some graveyard hate? Well just get Phyrexian Furnace with your Mage. You know the stories.

You already run Snow-Covered Island so try Mouth of Ronom. Blue doesn't have the best creature removel so this helps sometimes.

Just be carefull. If you play this deck too much, you might don't want to play any other deck.

Graveyard hate, eh? Burn Away do anything for you? if not, I recommend Mudhole for lands, Cranial Archive for card draw, Phyrexian Furnace is cheap but slow, Thran Foundry, and Watchers of the Dead seem like good choices to sub in. as for cuts, if you feel Vicious Shadows over preforms, then leave it in, but I just don't see how. It's trigger can be mitigated by having a low hand count. Shefet Monitor also could be cut.

All in all, I love your deck, commander needs more beat-down decks like this one rather than the tier 1 combo-crud that's been hitting my meta recently.
