"There has been another Murdah"

Commander / EDH BRG (Jund) Goad Sacrifice

205cwood

Introduction

When I first read Bhaal, Lord of Murder I was instantly captivated by the idea that I could sit back and watch as my opponents were forced to kill each other, as a true God of Murder. I built this deck what that idea in mind, to really abuse this ability. The understandable condition of Bhaal's ability is that it has to be a nontoken creature so there are a lot of creatures and none of them cost more than 4 mana so I should have no problem with having creatures to sacrifice for Bhaal's ability. There are also a few cheap but very powerful combat spells to ensure, when the time is right, my opponents creatures will have enough power to Murder my opponents.

Playing the Deck

Like I said in the introduction the way I want to win the game with this deck is to use Bhaal's ability to Goad my opponents' creatures. While there are other ways to Goad my opponents' creatures (I'll discuss that a little more later) the primary win condition is with my commander which is always problematic whenever you have one card you are relying on to win. This problem is mitigated greatly but Bhaal's first ability that will pretty much always make it indestructible. This makes my commander immune to many removal spells and board wipes although obviously not completely immune but 5 mana is not that high so if I need to cast it multiple times in a game it shouldn't be that difficult as the game goes on I will have more mana.

Not only are there plenty of creatures to sacrifice to make sure I can constantly use Bhaal's ability there are also a few spells that can make it easier for my opponents creatures to present lethal to my other opponents (cards like Temur Battle Rage). There are also a few infinite death trigger combos in the deck that can make creatures massive with the help of cards like Yawgmoth, Thran Physician and Grumgully, the Generous (I will go into more of these combos later).

The idea behind this deck is pretty simple but I believe piloting it will be the difficult part as far as in game politics go. I have set myself up to have access to plenty of creatures by incorporating card draw and some reanimation so I should have enough resources to consistently trigger Bhaal's ability throughout the entirety of the game.

Of course staying in the game is always an important goal which shouldn't be too hard as I should be able to keep any creature threats from attacking me and have a decent amount of removal to remove any permanents that aid in someone else's win.

One goal that I am slacking on a bit is protection for my commander. I am hoping it's indestructibility will be able to protect it enough but may have to reevaluate whenever I get to start playing the deck to see how he does.

  1. Goad
  2. This ability is the key to success in this deck and I'm trying to make the most of it in this deck. This is primarily done using my commander but there are a few other cards that do it as well so I can fill in the spots where my commander's ability might be lacking. These cards include Bloodthirsty Blade, Kardur, Doomscourge, and Laurine, the Diversion. Because I haven't actually played this deck I'm not totally sure how much I'm able to constantly get out of the commander ability and if I'll be able to make my opponents creatures buff enough to be a problem so I also put in combat trick spells as well as a few helpful enchantments to make my opponents creatures more deadly. These include Berserk, Tainted Strike, Solidarity of Heroes, Temur Battle Rage, and Unleash Fury as well as Rancor, Glistening Oil, and Kessig Wolf Run.
  3. Sacrifice
  4. For my commander's ability to activate a non-token creature has to die and I have plenty to go around. A few of them come with their own sacrifice abilities so I don't have to rely on other effects to sacrifice them but many do not so I also have several ways to sacrifice creatures which I will not list all of them here because there is just so many but a few key ones are Plumb the Forbidden, Viscera Seer, and Phyrexian Altar.
  5. Resource Replenishment
  6. The understandable hurdle to Bhaal's ability is that the creature that dies can't be a token to trigger the ability. Without being intentional about sustainable card draw it would be very easy to find that I'm out of options after one powerful play or an unfortunately timed board wipe. I have put in several cards in the deck to help mitigate the loss of creatures I sacrifice for Bhaal's ability including Beast Whisperer, Guardian Project, and Skullclamp.
  7. Combos
  8. Infinite combos have their right place and it's important to have Rule 0 and power level conversations with the other players. There is one infinite combo and one repeatable but limited combo in this deck but they do not produce a win outright like many others do. The infinite combo: Grumgully, the Generous+Putrid Goblin+ free sacrifice outlet = infinite death triggers. The repeatable combo: Yawgmoth, Thran Physician+Young Wolf+Butcher Ghoul+Essence Warden = up to as many cards as I have in my library sacrifice triggers. Like I said they they don't win me the game outright (although it could if I had something like a blood artist) but they are instrumental in assisting with closing out the game.
