Loyal Subordinate Discussion

Dumannios on Scarab God - Zombie Horde

meilers Ah yeah, I think you are talking about the one that gives tokens flying. Eternal Skylord?

Loyal Subordinate had a lot of success in my playgroup in the sense that, it drew about as much hate as The Scarab God himself... So it became somewhat of a removal magnet. But then again if the commander isn't out it doesn't do much. It was a bit of a hit or miss scenario, but it fit the drain theme at the time.

As for what to cut, it's just a suggestion on my end based on my preferences (Because I know how you feel, I love all my zombies and have a hard time cutting stuff. :P) I am not a huge fan of Cryptbreaker. People keep telling me how good it is but I just never use the abilities. Tapping 3 zombies usually leaves me with few blockers so I'd be wide open to draw 1 card. And tapping it for is maybe okay in an emergency if you need a quick blocker, but I don't see it saving the game or adding extreme value. I also ended up cutting Cemetery Reaper in my Varina, Lich Queen deck for the same reason. My commander did mostly what it did, but better. , to exile a creature for a 2/2 never happened. In this situation the optimal scenario would also be using your commander rather than it so you get a token copy of what you exiled as a 4/4. And then there is the +1/+1 for all zombies but there's quite a few lords already so losing one doesn't feel like it would hurt that much vs the payoff of getting some extra solutions.

Or if you use those abilities a lot and want to keep them in, and you can make a lot of cards in your deck work with Intruder Alarm (Works with 8 of your current cards if I counted right), that can also add a lot of value.

Dumannios Thanks for the suggestions! One of my biggest weakness I have thought with the deck was the removal abilities and dealing with flying. Luckily my play group dosen't play too much flying yet. If I am not mistaking, I think there is a zombie that gives flying from War of The Spark. It's just so hard to make cuts, when I love so many of the cards I have! I have Kindred Dominance in my Vampire deck and have thought about it for Zombies too.

Have you tried Loyal Subordinate? It was in my original deck back when my deck was pretty bad, and I cut it for some reason or another. Just curious on your success with it!

I like the decklist, seems pretty solid, though a bit low on removal (For my tastes anyway). Though it's costly mana-wise, Kindred Dominance can be a great wipe if you wish to preserve your board state (Although with Scarab god as your commander you will lose him unfortunately).

In my experience, the Zombie tribe has big issues with dealing with flyers. If you have enough discard or sacrifice outlets Wonder is a great card. A lot of people used to suggest Eldrazi Monument to me as well for this. Though I must admit, I never felt comfortable enough to actually put it in my own deck.

Phyrexian Delver and Loyal Subordinate could also be nice cards to consider if you haven't already.

MarrecoMTG Good to hear you like the deck! Don't underestimate yours too! Great build +1. Strionic Resonator is a great utility card and you can use it with so many other cards in the deck besides The Scarab God, Undead Augur, an extra card draw, Diregraf Colossus an extra tapped zombie, Loyal Subordinate another 3 life, etc. Lithoform Engine is a great card, but you need a Dramatic Reversal type effect to make it really effective. It also costs more to cast and activate, total, instead of if you choose the "Strionic" effect the first time.

Hi there,

I used to run a Sygg deck myself a few years back. Ninja's are a fine route to go, but the most important things that I discovered was how hard it was getting Sygg to trigger on opponents turns and the necessity to be able to withstand some table hate. Some cards that I found to be quite powerful in my old deck were:

Illusionist's Gambit - Such an underrated card which can save you in a pinch and force a Sygg trigger

Dulcet Sirens - Can force someone into attacking with the benefit you getting to chose whom they attack

Pestilence - A lot of times people will incidentally lose 1-2 life during their turn due to fetch or shock lands. Pestilence lets you get that 1-2 extra damage needed to trigger Sygg

Undermine - Counter anything and then draw a card

Any of Dauthi Embrace/Whispersilk Cloak/Key to the City/Keeper of Keys - Giving unblockable to whoever needs it

Smuggler's Copter - Flying 3/3 that loots and can be crewed by just about any creature

Some new cards that came out after my build that could find a home in Sygg are:

Loyal Subordinate - 3 guaranteed damage on your turn with Sygg out.

Rankle, Master of Pranks - It has 3 power, it flies, and you can always come out ahead with his discard ability if Sygg is on the battlefield. Oh, and he is basically a legal Braids, Cabal Minion

The first thing that comes to mind for me is Hatred. This can easily take out a player, and plays even better if you have a lifelink creature.

Jet Medallion seems like a great card to have in your deck, since you will probably play several spells a turn.

Black Market seems like it would generate a lot of value for you.

Wound Reflection also seems perfect for finishing off opponents.

In terms of aggressive, powerful creatures, I think you are missing a few key cards that would really make this deck scary.

Phyrexian Obliterator redefines what a good aggressive black card is.

Skirsdag High Priest is very easy to activate in Commander.

Loyal Subordinate represents heaps of damage with your commander out.

Rotting Regisaur is very much worth the discard for his body.

Woe Strider should make its way to the maindeck.

Abyssal Persecutor is excellent and even has great applications for multiplayer.

Demon of Catastrophes can eat up a useless creature in exchange for a 6/6 flying trample.

Doom Whisperer is great value.

Archfiend of Despair is the perfect late game finisher for you.

In terms of cuts, I don't think a lot of your very small creatures will get very far in a game of commander. I would cut the weaker ones like Carrier Thrall, Sanitarium Skeleton, Lazotep Reaver, Priest of the Forgotten Gods, Reassembling Skeleton and Tattered Mummy.

Tyrant's Choice seems like it won't often do what you want it to. I am sure you can find better removal than Defile. Sign in Blood and Night's Whisper also seem a bit underpowered for Commander.
