Casual Play and new players with new decks
Magicmelonballer, 7 years ago
So the first thing I want to say is that I really appreciate the advice I've gotten thus far. I haven't played in a few years, let alone building a deck, so my knowledge base is pretty lacking. I've already received a lot of really great suggestions and will be updating the deck. Next, I want to apologize, as I was unclear before. This deck is for casual play, so there will not be a sideboard as no one else in my group has a sideboard and I feel the competitive nature of a sideboard runs counter to the casual attitude I want to maintain. next, a few more players have joined the group, zombies with no graveyard recursion, azorius humans, and a "defensive control". nothing being supper aggressive can't handle. The primary new threat is a player with several myr decks. The ramp can get real, but it almost never does. the infinite manna combo is intimidating, but not super threatening since they only have 1 fireball to utilize the infinite mana. My primary worry is that he will edit the deck to fix it's efficiency issues and have more options for his infinite mana. This, aside from the fact that he also runs a rather intimidating myr ramp. Lastly, I'm heavily considering splashing green. having a few drew mechanics would allow me to survive smaller multiplayer matches. The issue is, I don't know how to "splash" a color. Do I just change some of my basic lands to dual lands? how much is a splash? will splashing green cause me to get mana screwed? how do? I'm almost certainly putting abzan falconer and path to exile into the deck (god damn Endbringer.) I'm also cutting my Gideons back. I don't want to add fetch lands into the deck because I R poor. I already had a number of cards in the deck and borrowed a few from my dad. I'm also already kicking my own ass with those thalias. If i can scrape up a stony silence or two, they're going in. I scared of the myr and eldrazis (friggin' endbringer). Thanks again for all the help. I really needed it.

decided to invest into some inventions and invocations. the only real change is
Solemn Simulacrum over Runic Armasaur to smooth out opening hands and get obnoxious with cloudstone/flicker

Added some cards to generate ramp and artifacts to sacrifice, such as Pitiless Plunderer and Thopter Assembly
V.5

Altering the theme slightly. Making the curve smaller along with an emphasis on sea creatures that fly based off a fear of being in the water around my queen 'island' because of the monsters {krakens & leviathans} that come a-courting.
In = Cloudfin Raptor, Sky-Eel School, Killer Whale, Kapsho Kitefins, Vinelasher Kudzu, Jaddi Offshoot, Growth Spasm
Out = Wash Out, Battering Krasis, Tromokratis, Colossal Whale, Crush of Tentacles, Mesmerizing Benthid, Explosive Vegetation

I went through the deck and confirmed that the list on here matches the list in reality. This build is still going strong in 2019. =)

Only 10 players tonight, and went 0-4 on the whole.
Round One 0-2 vs Scales
L G1: I couldn't block a lethal infect strike
L G2: He fought through my removal and I didn't draw threats.
Sb: 2 Kozilek's Return, 2 Surgical Extraction, 2 Reclamation Sage, 1 Walking Ballista, 2 Fracturing Gust
Round Two 1-2 vs Jeskai Control
L G1: He countered/pathed all my threats.
W G2: I was able to get enough beats in through removal for the win.
L G3: I couldn't answer Baneslayer. Really missed Dismember for this one.
Sb: Ruric Thar, the Unbowed, 3 Blood Moon, Gaea's Revenge, Choke
Round Three 1-2 vs Counters Company
L G1: He combo'd off the turn before I would've won.
W G2: Craterhoof Behemoth for the win.
L G3: I got stuck on 2 lands, womp womp.
Sb: 3 Blood Moon, Walking Ballista, 2 Kozilek's Return
Round Four 1-2 vs Lantern Control
W G1: Bounced Ensnaring Bridge with Primal Command and swung for lethal all at once before he could recast.
L G2, G3: Locked out by Gaddock Teeg to block Primal Command, Pithing Needle to stop Walking Ballista and Ensnaring Bridge for no more combat.
Sb: 2 Fracturing Gust, 2 Reclamation Sage, Walking Ballista, 2 Surgical Extraction

Update for the PB Tourney on 3/23
nexusv3, 7 years ago
I had two minor discrepancies between my paper version and this list. Somehow my deck had 2 copies of Kodama's Reach, and had a The Great Aurora instead of Naturalize. 2nd Kodama's is out (glad I found that before the tournament) and put a Seize the Day in. I kept Great Aurora. I had to take out Sylvan Safekeeper and Lightning Greaves - they were just too much for the budget. When I put the deck together initially, they were expensive but fine. I think some other cards crept up in the intervening weeks? Regardless, Whispersilk Cloak is very much the PB version of Lightning Greaves and I threw in a Terastodon too. I'm still on the fence about Runic Armasaur - I had it out for 4+ turns in one game and he drew literally one card. He might be a card that's better in a non-budget meta? Although, if I were playing against another Borborygmos I would've been raking in the cards. We'll leave him in for the tourney and see what happens.

Adjustments and Combo Shenanigans

I have removed 2x Forest to make room for Nylea's Presence to act as a set up finisher with Elvish Champion. The fact that it replaces itself makes it worth running in the mainboard and easy enough to become sideboard fodder as needed.
I have decided to reduce the number of Lead the Stampede in favor of putting Wrap in Vigor in the mainboard to combat Supreme Verdict
/Anger of the Gods rather than just be able to recover/hopefully draw five more elves after a boardwipe. Im also making this descision because of the growing amount of relevant non-creature spells in this deck.
This has lead me to make room for Raking Canopy in the sideboard. Spirits has gotten a lot of tribal support lately so im hoping this can be brought in to wipe that smug look on their face the way it did against Faeries once upon a time.
3/2 showing at Modern promts change.

Took the deck to Modern and ended up losing to a Grixis Control and Mono-Red Madcap Phoenix deck. Both odd matchups I don't see often. I had Chandra become a dead draw too often, so I have removed her. Sad day.
Small changes

Removed 2x Mountain and 1x Swamp, replaced them with 1x Barren Moor, 1x Forgotten Cave and 1x Cabal Ritual.

Been a while since I've updated this. Mana dorks have been working well and I've slotted all except for Millikin into the deck, cutting less mana-efficient token generators for them:
-1 Beetleback Chief +1 Hedron Crawler
-1 Emrakul's Hatcher +1 Manakin
-1 Pia and Kiran Nalaar +1 Plague Myr
-1 Spawning Breath +1 Runaway Steam-Kin
I've also dropped a cantrip (gasp!), the mediocre Rile. It required warping the deck too much and was too unreliable. Even with almost-entirely toughness-pumps, it still wiped my board too often.
-1 Rile +1 Faithless Looting
Nothing exciting in RAV. Goblin Gathering is just sad in a singleton format. Storm Strike will probably find its way in soon, I'm going to try to revamp the pump spells now that I've cut Rile and Spawning Breath, and the scry is a very nice bonus. I'm tempted to try out Light Up the Stage as well; I'm usually able to chip in for a couple damage with tokens early on.
I'm keeping all of your comments and suggestions in mind! I'll try out Loyal Apprentice as soon as I get my hands on one. Thanks so much for commenting, everyone!

Really want to try out Electrodominance. Seems like really good value. I am typically able to generate lots of mana allowing me to finish off a low opponent or remove a threatening creature and does not hurt tempo with the free cast. The thought of a Riku copy is to temping to pass up.
Had a hard time finding a cut. Settled on Nissa, I usually play her for the recursion effect. After which she is promptly killed off. If I am hoping to use her for the ult Totyova just does it straight up and was slotted in last update. Going to try it out and see if I miss her.

Wanted a chiller superfriends deck that values harder but doesn't win through the normal lock everyone hates but I gotta add power to it so there we go, pulling into darker powers, even the Avengers call upon unlikely forces.

Removed the 2 Temur Ascendancy, they aren't that great aside from draw mechanic but T3 I'd rather play a Thunderbreak Regent rather than an enchantment for card draw/haste when the rest of my dragons have haste. Removed 3 Destructive Revelry to add in 2 Back to Nature in SB and 1 MB for enchantment hate, I'm already running 2 Hurkyl's to bounce artifacts, granted I might swap back as Revelry hits both for 1R instead of 1 colorless but will destroy and also force life loss from them. Also added in 2 Choke as there seems to be quite a bit of control/U colored decks that this could really ruin.
