Maybeboard

Suggestions for additions or removes always welcome. This deck is focused primarily on competitive play as my playgroup is quite competitive.

Combos:

Lion's Eye Diamond + Muldrotha, the Gravetide + Animate Dead / Dance of the Dead + Phantasmal Image . The downside to this combo is that Muldrotha, the Gravetide costs 6 mana to casts and therefore isn't what we're primarily looking for in this deck. It's a great combo to use if the game goes late, and as Muldrotha, the Gravetide is your commander as long as things aren't exiled then the recursion is amazing to have. This combo does not definitively win the game, but if Acidic Slime is available to play then wiping everyone's lands and board is the go to play with this combo. All of the cards in it have to line up pretty nicely to play it, but it's able to be searched fairly easily and all of the cards are good in this deck in their own right so worth playing anyways.

Mindcrank + Duskmantle Guildmage This is a combo that is amazing to mill someone out early if unanswered. There have been a few times that this was out quick enough and wasn't able to be answered leading to very early wins. If you're able to start off with one of the pieces and a tutor, or draw into it early somehow then it can be a cheap and early win.

Piloting the deck: Keep in mind that this deck is not for a casual setting and is meant to be played against other competitive builds rather than a casual game night. So I've put the deck together over many games along with friends that have a similar mindset with continuously adding improvements and I've had success with the following strategies.

  • This deck can make fast mana with the use of Lion's Eye Diamond and Dark Ritual . Dark Ritual can be an extremely valuable tool to ensure a quick lock down with the deck. Ideally you want a way to be able to get your overpowered praetors onto the battlefield to lock down your opponents as early as possible. There's games where you can draw a 7 card hand and if you have a praetor, reanimate, and swamp in your hand can get Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur out as early as turn two. This can be devastating for your opponents if unanswered that turn. Add in Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger and get that double mana. When choosing what to put into the graveyard with buried alive, keep in mind that Glen Elendra Archmage is available to protect your valuable praetors on the board.

  • Another strategy to dealing with opponents is the land recursion. There have been games where I've been able to shut an opponents ability to even play with an early Crucible of Worlds or Ramunap Excavator and a Wasteland / Strip Mine + Exploration . In a 1v1 this is even more devastating having only to deal with 1 person's land base. Pair this up with an Azusa, Lost but Seeking and its just rude.
