One day, a nice wizard named Baral had many, many friends. "What a minute," he said, "everyone says that there's such a thing as too much of a good thing." So he decided to cut down on his numerous friends. But how best to achieve such a feat?

And lo, Baral's Counterspell deck was born.

Within days, his circle of friends had dwindled to nothing. For indeed, nobody could ever play anything against him during those long insufferable matches. "Surely, as I gain more and more lands, I'll be able to play a decoy spell, and after he counters THAT, he'll be out of mana and out of counters for my REAL important spell of the turn!"

But alas, no, Baral had enough ressources to counter EVERYTHING: the decoy AND the main spell, and then some. Counterspells were cheap, see? He got them at a discount. He knew a guy. And each time he countered, he drew and discarded to make sure his next Counterspell was within reach.

He drew so much, in fact, that "Draw Triggers" became his new friends! Just when he was starting to feel lonely. Toothy, Imaginary Friend might be imaginary, but he's a great friend for wizards quick on the draw. But Baral's bestest BBF ever was Chasm Skulker.

But he never forgot that he discarded as much as he drew. And so, "Discard Triggers" became really good pals, too. And so, Drake Haven and Curator of Mysteries became regulars.

Alas, this kind of party soon makes a lot of trash. His bins were soon overflowing with Instants and Sorceries. But because Baral was such a wiz, he turned even that into a weapon. So many things that feed off the trash! And no we're not talking raccoons or hoboes, but his friends from the Academy Elite, or the Runechanter Spike or the Cryptic Serpent.

This never-ending party always made sure he had plenty of Instants and Sorceries on hand. In fact, he grew to be such an obsessive user that it became a problem. Soon, "other things" started happening each time he lit up an Inst or a Sorc. Things like Metallurgic Summonings, Quiet Contemplation and Niblis of Frost. Oh, yes, he was frosty, alright. Even his buddy Talrand, Sky Summoner started showing up. Madness was just around the corner! (no, really, actual Madness, like Chilling Grasp)

It was a dangerous party, and soon he started missing his old friends. The rest of the story is a long and hard struggle to put down the Counterspells. Because Counterspells and all their friends are like cigarettes. You don't get addicted to the cigarettes themselves: it's what inside that does it.

Baral's nicotine was the constant winning.
