Sage's Dousing Discussion

@Pernicious_Dude: I actually pulled out the two Vedalken AEthermage's from the list for more Voidmage Prodigy, haha.

I haven't actually put the deck together yet, but I'm hoping for it to be a bit of a fun toolbox that exemplifies Blue. My kitchen table group doesn't give much time to that side of the wedge wheel, and I've always been a blue mage at heart.

I'm just looking for something with variety and maybe some neat synergy. Something that irritates their plans without being a horrible person, and still possibly get some wins.

Azami, Lady of Scrolls and Sage's Dousing would definitely solve my lack of card draw.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. I'm definitely going to play around with the deck and sub things out once I establish a baseline of how it performs.

If you can get ahold of one, Azami, Lady of Scrolls would be amazing in a deck like this! I also recommend Vedalken AEthermage since wizardcycling helps ease the pain of having only 1 or 2 of most of your wizards, and lets you play a toolbox style deck. Sage's Dousing is also pretty strong here if you're looking for more counterspells.

I like seeing Apprentice Wizard for unexpected ramp, and I'm also a sucker for any deck that uses Rune Snag. The morph sub theme is cool too - just enough to keep people guessing.

Does High Tide do a lot for you? I don't see many ways to take advantage of it.

@Squire1 UR isn't particularly good at answering threats once they're on the board, and playing draw-go with Jhoira seems fine. You can just suspend your haymakers on an opponent's end step if you didn't need to counter anything, and most of your threats are going to be so powerful that they won't need much to protect them.

@NickyBolas Here's a list of soft counters I think are reasonable in EDH:

My problem with Mental Misstep is that I always feel relieved to see a target for it, which usually indicates that the answer is too narrow.

Wizards are awesome. You can have a lot of fun with flavor and make a great deck. This seems like it is trying to do too much though. If the hundred card thing is part of a rule you have with your play group or something by all means continue. But this almost seems like it is a commander deck without the commander benefits. Stonybrook Banneret helps makes the wizards cheaper and using Sage's Dousing gives you counters and draw power. You're also running almost 4 times as many lands as creatures or Sorcery. You don't need memnarch unless your group is very artifact heavy. You really should just make some edits and make it a commander deck and use like Baral, Chief of Compliance as the commander and make a control deck. I'm just confused is all.

I've been running merfolk for a while and in my experience theres a lot of this you can take out. My deck has lost maybe three times and I don't have any artifacts in it or enchantments. Add two Halimar Depths and Sage's Dousing then the deck really just needs to be 4x Cursecatcher 4x Lord of Atlantis 4x Master of the Pearl Trident 4x Merfolk Sovereign 4x Stonybrook Banneret and 4x Merrow Reejerey

I am running Chrome Mox, Mox Opal, and Fellwar Stone for my nonland blue sources. I really like Dream Fracture in place of Sage's Dousing. Azami may get a spot in here too.
