As soon as I saw Athreos, I decided I wanted to play him as an EDH general. Athreos's Low converted mana cost coupled with his recursion was made better by his ability to trigger loss of life for anyone around the table in multiplayer games.

Giving your opponents the ability to choose how your cards work is always going to result in weaker interactions, so the trick was designing the deck such that either option was acceptable. A deck where you get value out of your creatures immediately (through Enter the Battlefield triggers), get additional value through sacrificing them (through cards like Disciple of Bolas or Doomed Necromancer) only gets better when you tack on 3 loss of life.

So, each creature needed to be strong enough that your opponents would never allow it to return to your hand. And you're okay with that because Athreos just turned into a big Blood Artist.
