Fleshwrither Discussion

EternalBrewmaster on Haakon, the Mountain that Rides [[Primer]]

I understand what you mean Magnivore. It's probably the least straightforward deck I've ever designed. What you tutor for in any given situation is usually going to depend on what you already have, except for Command Beacon. And all of the deeper interactions and things like Dimir House Guard and Fleshwrither targets are non-obvious too.

Cheap cards you want to add here:

Crystalline Crawler - take out one of your less desirable sac fodders and use this one to generate infinite black mana!

Also find a place to fit in Fleshwrither for another cheap 'tutor' type card that works great in this deck, especially once you add in the Crystalline Crawler, since it can go hunting for it, just like your Dimir House Guard.

Cards to tune this ever closer to victory:

Conqueror's Flail

Cavern of Souls

Both these cards are designed for one thing and one thing only for you... getting Mikaeus on the board. All the combo's are wonderful and fun and nice and all... but they don't work without him. So getting him on the board to let your infinite sac mills spin into (un)life is the glass bottleneck this deck will probably struggle the most against when dealing with players who know how the deck runs out.

Cavern of Souls is expensive I know... so maybe go the Conqueror's Flail first if your picking these up :)

Have you thought of Fleshwrither? You're not running a bunch of 4 drops, but he can put either Necrotic Ooze or Body Snatcher directly into play.

I like Altar of Dementia, as it and karmic + reveillark is gg. Blasting Station is the same, but i do feel it is underwhelming otherwise, that's going out. Elvish Skysweeper- well, i thought that was a 3 when I first saw it. Flyers aren't much of a problem, so goodbye. I completetly forgot about rites, have one around here somewhere....

Fallen Angel was my number one pick to get rid of. So goodbye. Same with Fleshwrither- I just always want to use future sight cards cuz they look cool. I like Ashen Rider the same reason I like Spine of Ish Sah in my Daretti- pricy, yes, but it's a recurrable Vindicate. Simply the best removal around. Plus rider is 2 Exiling Vindicates every turn. I'll think about that one.

And Phyrexian Plaguelord. It's great removal, but I think the sac isn't effective or big enough, so ya you've convinced me there. I usually only sac one thing a turn.

As always, thanks for the help!

Ok, so 20 sac outlets is a lot.

Altar of Dementia is a bit underwhelming since you don't do any other mill yourself, you are basically hoping your opponents deck themselves.

Blasting Station only reliably works with Evangel of Heliod (I could be overlooking/missing a combo), but it doesn't seem all to impressive.

Phyrexian Plaguelord has great options, but with a CMC of 5, he isn't the best to have. I would pick Sadistic Hypnotist over it.

At 5 CMC a sac, Elvish Skysweeper seems pricey at best. However, if flying is a problem, go for it, but its not going to stop an Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Sigarda, Host of Herons, and definitely not a Zur the Enchanter.

Fallen Angel is really cool to use, but falls short when compared to Fallen Ideal, which not only returns to your hand (just self sac if the enchant is gonna be destroyed), but also allows you to put the sac outlet on anything, including Karador.

I would actually replace Carnage Altar with Vampiric Rites, the comparison in value is crazy.

As far as tutors go, Fleshwrither literally grabs 1 of 4 creatures. Jarad, Meren, Solemn, or Flesh-Eater Imp. Sure, you can recast him, but paying 7 mana for a tutor like that when you could just drop Entomb to cast something or Jarad's Orders for one in 'yard and one in hand just look a lot better.

Ashen Rider is a bit pricey, but it has uses (especially with Soldevi Adnate) but if you don't have more ways to get him out easy, is he worth the CMC of 8?

I hope this helps with some insight! I have been a big fan of yours and you are always supportive of my decks! Good luck cutting! If you need more cuts, I'll be close.

unos on Rakdos Discard Madness Punishment

To cast Rakdos, Lord of Riots you need to be 100% sure of dealing combat damage at turn 4. It really depends on what kind of opponent you're facing. If your little damagers are blocked or removed, no Rakdos, Lord of Riots for you.

You can also design other ways to do free damage at turn 4. Examples are countless:

The other route is "not casting it":

  • Fleshwrither's unique put-into-play-from-library ability that works because both rakdos and this horrific guy cost 4 mana total (not doable on turn 4)

  • using things that let you put it into play from your hand like Through the Breach or Quicksilver Amulet

  • putting Rakdos into the graveyard and reanimating it directly into play. This is the way Reanimator decks cheat powerful creatures (Griselbrand) into play. You have to: (1) find your Rakdos from your library and (2) put him into your graveyard, (3) reanimate it, (4) in some cases find a way to dodge the reanimation spell drawbacks. It's tricky, see that a deck that does this needs the whole deck built around this single combo (http://www.channelfireball.com/articles/grishoalbrand-deck-tech-and-guide/)

I recommend the two following articles:

  • how to handle Rakdos Lord of Riots (http://www.gatheringmagic.com/andrew-wilson-rakdos-return-to-ravnica-keyword-121112-paincast/)

  • suggestions for a Rakdos Commander list (http://legitmtg.com/casual/their-agony-and-the-ecstasy/) that has a huge number of synergic card suggestions (not always modern-legal eh!)

Hey! Thanks for reviewing my Sheoldred sacrifice deck; I took some of the cards you mentioned in consideration and I came to see what you've been brewing with Chainer.

I do enjoy what he does which Sheoldred can't, although I feel Chainer is geared more towards a reanimator/mill deck, which is something Sheoldred only does half-way, and not quite the theme I went for with my deck, but still included in the 99 as a supplement to her strategy.

I've plenty of love for your deck, though. If you stick to Chainer's theme, I feel Geth, Lord of the Vault is a great card for your 99.

Given my table is control-heavy, I've decided to throw in Mindslicer. It's a ridiculous card that if resolved early enough, or let's say, transfigured into with a Fleshwrither (which could be a good card if you give it good targets like let's say, Phyrexian Obliterator), could give you an edge; I wouldn't mind dropping the table's hands when Chainer can pick up the juicy high drop scraps afterwards while others weep. (That's the spirit of , really!)

Oh, and Braids, Cabal Minion is banned in commander, sorry to tell ya. If your table is fine with playing her, that's cool, but otherwise be wary of that.

Increasing Ambition is simply better than Dark Petition at this point. Fleshwrither doesnt have any options to bring in your deck other than Erebos. Black Market is good and synergizes with your commander. Tree of Perdition too specific and is a creature Sorin way better. If you can, get Pithing Needle as it can shut down some decks and you can name Lethal Vapors effecively dealing with its downside.
