"Oops" -Wizards of the Coast

Commander / EDH Casual Four Color Midrange

Primusfan42

Well, it initially appeared that Wizards wanted to restrict the partner commanders in such a way that building a deck that made a broken combination would be impossible. Unfortunately for my playgroup, they messed up. Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa + Silas Renn, Seeker Adept looks scary for anybody who dislikes the Mindslaver. When I first saw Silas, I knew that I wanted to build a deck around him--and that Mindslaver lock would be an integral part of that deck. All you have to do for a lock is reach 10 mana and deal combat damage with Silas every turn. If only there were an easy way to give him evasion... Oh, wait. There is an easy way to give him evasion! And I can use it as my second commander! Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa looks wonderful for an Assault Formation deck, and he works very well as a utility card in this one.

Now comes the tricky part: balancing the abilities of the two commanders to build a cohesive deck. Here, I will explain all of the interactions and justifications for decisions regarding cards in the 98.

Ramp + Mana Fixing

Cultivate, Farseek , Tempt with Discovery, Land Tax, Burgeoning, Skyshroud Claim, Chromatic Lantern, Sol Ring, the Signets

This deck needs a strong ramp suite so that it can reach the 10 mana per turn that it requires to get the Mindslaver lock.

Defense

Kira, Great Glass-Spinner, Privileged Position, Asceticism, Padeem, Consul of Innovation, Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Archetype of Endurance, Lightning Greaves

Everybody will want to stop the combo, so it is important to use several effects that can give your creatures protection.

Disruption

Counterspell, Beast Within, Stifle, Voidslime, Abrupt Decay, Vindicate, Merciless Eviction, Supreme Verdict, Wrath of God

Board wipes, spot removal, and counters are helpful in just about any EDH deck. This one is no exception.

Tutors

Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Tutor, Enlightened Tutor, Mystical Tutor, Fabricate

Because the deck does not revolve strictly around a specific combo, I do not want to overload myself with tutors. However, having a few in the deck is definitely necessary.

Wincons

Doran, the Siege Tower helps deal the 21 damage necessary with Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa just in case the mindslaver lock doesn't work out.

Darksteel Reactor is here because I am a big proponent of having alternate win conditions. It is great for slow games and works well with Contagion Engine + Seedborn Muse .

Avacyn, Angel of Hope is an achievable wincon in this deck because it has so much ramp.

Defense of the Heart: Get two fatties? Yes, please. Under most circumstances, it will tutor up Archetype of Imagination and Avacyn, Angel of Hope because semi-unblockable and indestructible for all of my creatures helps a lot.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the goal is to play cool artifacts and either lock down the game with Mindslaver combo or swing in with a couple of big creatures. I have limited funds and have not yet purchased all of the cards necessary for the deck; please let me know if you find any of my inclusions ineffective or if you have a strong suggestion. Thanks!
