Maybeboard

So, the story behind wanting to build this deck was the first time I saw the card Lich. I thought it was such a cool card, and wanted to build a commander deck around it. I then very quickly realised there were a couple of other cards that had similar effects, namely Nefarious Lich and Lich's Mastery, so I had to build a deck around all 3.

BECOME THE MASTER OF UNDEATH

Essentially the idea is to achieve lichdom and become indifferent to your life total, your opponents boards, and really anything else going on in the game other than your undying commitment to attain as much power as possible at any cost in order to destroy your opponents in the most creatively evil ways possible.

The way I like to describe how this deck works is it's as if you were the dark lord Voldemort himself, and on your quest for power you will be pushing the boundaries between life and death, pushing yourself to the brink to obtain limitless power, relying on the creation and protection of Horcruxs to bind you to the mortal realm.

This deck acts a bit like a glass cannon, in where there are several over powered things you can do once you have a certain setup, but it can all be shattered very quickly.

Here's how we win:

If we can stay alive at less that 1 life with cards like Lich, Soul Echo, Platinum Angel or any of the other cards that say we cannot die, we can do some crazy stuff:

There are many ways we can get to 0 life, either through cards like Lich itself,Lim-Dul's Vault or Ad Nauseam.

If we are to swap life totals with someone who has a higher life total than us, it actually counts as us gaining that life. This means if we have one of our lichs out Lich/Nefarious Lich/Lich's Mastery, we can kill our opponents with Psychosis Crawler through drawing a bunch of cards, or even if we don't have a lich out, we can use cards like Vizkopa Guildmage or Aetherflux Reservoir to delete our opponents by gaining life. We also have a lot of other life gain effects like Martyr of Sands, Soul Warden and Words of Worship to support turning life into card draw or to just gain as much life as possible.

If we do draw a bunch of cards, we can use Skirge Familiar to start discarding cards for massive amounts of mana to combo off and win the game.

Our Commander

This deck can be quite slow, so in order to protect ourselves and have some sort of board state early on, our commander Zur, Eternal Schemer works really well with any cheap enchantment, turning it into a creature with deathtouch, hexproof and lifelink.

The lifelink is also incrediblty useful for our lich effects or other win conditions which require life gain. Giving our enchantment creatures deathouch and hexproof is also fantastic, as now all of our utility enchantments like Rhystic Study, Smothering Tithe and Land Tax become even more useful.

The hexproof is also fantastic to stop people targeting our big important enchantments like Lich, Axis of Mortality and Transcendence, and giving us the option to do it at instant speed is also fantastic.

Creating and Protecting our Horcruxes

As we are going to be in a spot where we can just lose the game outright very quickly if only a few things are removed, a big theme of the deck is to run a lot of protection for our enchantments, and spells that stop us from losing on the spot if things don't go our way:

Effects that counter our Lich's "Lose the game" triggered abilities when they get removed:

We also have many permanant horcruxs that stop us from dying outright through damage/loss of life or other means:

We also protect these horcruxes via cards like:

Sharing our Unholy Curse of Undeath

If we don't fancy it either, we can use Jon Irenicus, Shattered One to give our opponents our lich effects (once they've been turned into a creature) or any other cards we don't feel like having anymore, maybe we drew 20 cards while a lich card was out or we just gained 20 life from Illusions of Grandeur and now we give our opponents it to deal with. Or perhaphs the cummulative upkeep on Thought Lash has got to high and we don't feel like paying it anymore.

Other Interesting Shennanigans

Another great thing to note is if we have Lich or Nefarious Lich out, we only sacrafice permenants or exile cards in our graveyard if we receive damage, meaning if we convert damage into loss of life instead, we can totally skip the negative side.

With cards like Delaying Shield this becomes trivially easy to do, all while losing life and getting us closer to a Repay in Kind win con.
